Just tried the mod with a friend (along with public players) - incredibly fun, I must say, if a bit challenging for the Hidden. It was a server of 8 Iris vs 1 Hidden - I'd wager the optimal amount of Iris is around 4-6. Depends on the skill of the Hidden, of course, but still.

Regarding PB's complaints, I didn't notice any griefing by teamplayers, it was all jolly good.

I never heard of a nvidia card to cost less than the same performance ati video card .
Then you clearly haven't been paying attention lately. Note that the 4870 is a relatively new card - the 8800GT had been the dominant player in the market for quite some time. If the benchmarks and prices agree with you, by all means go with the HD4870.

8800 GT is still one of the best cards on the market and definitely the most Bang for the Buck. If you wanted better, you'd need to go upwards of $500, and it's really not worth it.

I agree with PB in his recommendations. DDR2-ram is ridiculously low-priced these days even though it's still relatively fast compared to the newer DD3 models. You could probably get 4GB of 800Mhz for something like $100 - get it.

Motherboard-wise, SLi or Crossfire (eg. double graphic card slots) is just a waste. The performance boost of using 2 graphics cards is not worth the ridiculous price.
Just make sure you get something that will fit your CPU needs: Intel's Core 2 Duo series is very nice and not very expensive - the E8500 looks like a great buy. On the motherboard, don't get the new intel chipset (I forget its name), stick with the "old" P35 - it's still very good and much cheaper.

Doesn't look too promising. Like most all superhero movies, reeks of mediocrity and tackiness. The fact that the director did 300 is not really something positive either... 300 was pretty crappy too.

Oh, and the Leage sucked, a lot. Simple doesn't mean bad, but simple also doesn't ensure it's not annoyingly crap.

in why not clipping? Post #252252
The clipping tool is usually used to cut brushes, not to make complex shapes, as it creates off-grid vertices which is bad for the overall performance of your map.
Not if you clip properly, e.g. clip from one grid point to another. Again, depends entirely on the user, not the tool.
Posted 16 years ago2008-07-08 16:44:29 UTC
in why not clipping? Post #252248
First of all: no one ever said the clip tool was bad. You're probably thinking about the carve tool, which can be horribly misused by inexperienced mappers, read more here.

The clip tool should definitely be a part of any mapper's habits.

You're also making an argument where there is none - the vertex manipulation tool is in no way a replacement of the clipping tool. They're for two different things entirely. For some things (such as aligning vertices, duh) the vertex manipulation tool is supreme, while the clipping tool is better for others (such as splitting brushes up).

Oh, and if your brush became invalid after using the vertex manipulation tool, it's not the tool's fault, you just suck. Seriously, learn how to use a tool before you start criticising it (protip: concave brushes is a no-no).

The issue with IE (IE6 much more than IE7, but they are both afflicted) is its rendering problems, not their functionality as browsers. Speaking from a web designer point of view, IE is terrible. I mean... disastrous. IE disregards any forms of accepted standards, it's incredibly buggy and generally annoying as hell. Ask any modern web designer.
This is really the problem with IE: it destroys the web.

in Website Creation Question Post #251998
"Normal household" computers are fine with running 24/7. You should probably do some maintenance every few weeks or months, but that's the case with any computer. Server boxes are usually very similar to desktops in terms of hardware, only with more redundancy - if one component breaks or malfunctions, the server should still work.

However, a normal household internet connection is pretty terrible at serving content to a lot of people. Standard DSL and Cable connections will very often have a lower upload rate than the download rate - my own is 8Mbit down, 1 Mbit up, which is just barely enough to simultaneously serve files to 2 people. More than that, and it becomes fairly slow. This, of course, depends on computer speed as well.

Let's get a few things clear. FTP is not web hosting. It's a file transfer protocol, often used to upload stuff to a web server.

A web server, e.g. HTTP, is what you want. My own ZLDB (up like 12/5) runs off of my own computer using the Apache HTTP server. It's both free and the most widely used web server on the internet.
You won't get a domain name - those, you'll either pay for or get a free one from sites like dyndns.org - but the web site will still be accessible through your IP immediately.

As far as commercial web hosts go, I've never used one personally, but have heard good things about dreamhost.com.

in Search is pissing me off! Post #250901
The_(c)Striker's reply is just terrible. First of all, it doesn't belong in this thread. Second, it's not constructive - "looks like shit" is not a description of the problem nor does it offer any solution. Third, it's vague - there's no such thing as BBC Code, nor do you explain what "it's always placed at the end of the post means". Please, LERN 2 FORUM.

As for the topic at hand, I'd wager it's a simple (or several) MySQL LIKE query(s) - probably very similar to that of the old TWHL. I've never written PHP search systems myself, but I'd guess getting anything more advanced is going to require lots of work.

When recording I was running at my usual 1280x960 - however, the region was fixed at a (rather random) 992x744 to save size.

These were the settings iirc. I tested a few different ones, not that much difference.

In CamStudio, I was recording to Microsoft Video, not XviD. The quality difference was quite a bit.

Riva's FLV Converter is generally better than those free "convert anything"-programs (that are usually shareware). It allows better compression and more options.

If you got the 30-day trial version, that's Riva Producer. You only need the freeware encoder.

For those of you who own Flash (CS2 or later, IIRC), there's the FLV Encoder that comes with that. Supposedly (haven't tried it) it's superior to any other alternatives.

The music industry desperately trying to fight piracy is somewhat understandable. This is an industry, we're talking about - record labels, not artists. And their outdated method of distribution (namely, records) is apparently flawed. Of course, this is not the way the industry sees it - according to them it's easy, we're all thieves and they're doing what's right.

What they should be doing is find alternate ways to distribute music. A step in the right direction would be online stores that don't suck (fuck off iTunes, DRM-ridden, low-quality expensive crap). Believe it or not, internet users will pay for music - if it's easily accessible and goes to the artist not some label. I know I would, anyway.

Well, this is somewhat of a useless rant, I suspect we are all in agreement on the subject.

My attempt at a video tutorial regarding arched doorways. It's really just a shot at making video tutorials. The quality is pretty bad, even though the original AVI looks fine - anyone have any suggestions instead of Riva FLV Encoder for encoding AVI to FLV?
