Yay Batch compiler! = )

There are tons of threads regarding this error. Go in the seach bar for forums, and enter "Leaf portals saw" in the textbox.

You'll find lots of causes and fixes, but if you're just beginning, rebuilding the map might not be a bad idea. (my first map was horrendous, as are most peoples, in terms of brushwork and just about everything else)

If you can't figure it out still, post a new thread with your compile log, and/or a link to your map so we can see. = )

I realize there are loads of model replacements set and readily available, but I'm looking for opinions from people with more experience.

If not everything at least the weapons/weapon sounds for the glock, shotty, mp5, and nades. (the others are actually ok) I'm hoping some of you more into models/model replacement will have some good ideas.

If you have random suggestions for player and monster models or anything else related, please let me know! = )

Some of you dlls will overwrite some of the flat-life dlls... so i'll have to recopy his before playing flat-life again? (Is there a way to keep all the dlls from different mods seperate?)

Mapping looks great, and nice use of models(almost cluttered, but I supposed i've never complained about a map having too much detail, so I won't start now!). Textures and lighting looks nice too.

My only real complaint is that you took all that time with the nice mapping, beautiful texturing and model placement, but you left the original HL weapons models in there! They simply don't match the rest of the environment; the original HL weapons are bad-looking to begin with, but look really bad in front of a nice environment.

Anyway, really good work. I can tell you put a lot of hard work into it!

TJB: Thanks! You did yours really fast... I would never have been able to finish what you did in that one day or so... heck, I wouldn't have even been able to think of the ideas for the mechanisms that quick! : P

btw I rescaled some things like mop (it was like 10-feet tall), and the changes will be in the next compile if i do one.

MuzzleFlash: Thanks! those areas with the wall textlights were never inteneded to be seen by the player. will be fixed in the next version if there is one. = )

Daubster/Tetsu0/everyone: I hope we get more entries, plus sometime down the road maybe have a part II to this! you could do a themed challenge, like, make a RG machine from only those items you'd find at a BLANK, or just do another one... it's tedious but fun!

for the tetris map I can't jump high enough to clear 1 block, even crouch-jumping... is there an FAQ or Troubleshooting file, lol. = )

I love the music and the menu tho, and those tetris blocks are neatly textured. Downloding some other maps now.

Maybe you should keep an updated list of flat-life map links in 1st post of the popularity drive thread, along with the latest version of the game (which I think you already do)

I'm thinking about making a map too. = )

edit: for some reason quitting the game (esc, using exit from splash) causes my HL to freeze, and I have to Taskmanager to exit. since no one else has mentioned this am I screwing something up?

edit2:

I just played Ghetto's map, it's nice and works good and is fun = ).

There's a delay for crouching... does this happen for everybody?

It would be neat if you could change direction with the mouse, but probably not possible with the restraints you have to work with. it's funny watching gordon fall when he's "aimed" all the way up--like he's goosestepping, lawl. = )

edit3: (last one promise) for Deathan's map I have some bug reports:

Literally amazing stuff. I love your concept art, screens, and the your models are breathtaking! This is one of the more promising/absolutely unique mods for HL I've seen in a long while, and you seem to be determined to finish it... I hope you do.

Redka, you have me intrigued by this Quark Editor... i'm trying it today : )

Potatis: There are lots of reasons BC is better, but it just comes down to personal preference in the end. (lots of great mappers still swear by it)

I rebelled for a long time against the Batch Compiler because I liked it the Hammer way, but now, I wouldn't go back to the Hammer for compiling in one million years1 = )

If you're interested in Batch Compiler advantages, read on:

-The most important reason for me is Batch Compiler never compiles the wrong map, as hammer is known to do from time to time. (a very disconcerting glitch if it's never happened to you). This is the number 1 reason I switched, but for all these other reasons, I'm glad i did:

-you can continue to edit the map (if you want) while your last compile is still going. This way, you can test certain areas of a map and work on others with no wait in-between.

-Arguably faster( I don't notice a huge difference, but people say with bigger maps it gives you compile speed improvement.

-you can monitor the compile progress in real-time, without it freezing

-Highly customizable, Lots more options you can toggle with checkboxes for every compile stage. You can save profiles for different compile configurations easily. (has a checkbox for every rad compile switch for example).

-can't think of any more atm, but I only wish I had switched over sooner.

OMG I'm a tard...

When I read the first page of this when it came out I thought it was for HL2 because of the title: "HL2D!"... After I saw questions about Flat-Life mapping in the HL Engine forum, I finally saw the light! : O

Downloading now.... = )

I always wanted to make a 8-bit Metroid or Super Mario Brothers recreation like this! I dicked around with trigger cameras and then the 3rd-person console command for Gordon, but gave up rather quickly.

The top-down idea pwns... I never even considered that one. Now I'm thinking 2-player coop like Ikari Warriors or Heavy Barrel, with Gordon and Barney! :nuts:

The textures used in the prefab are not loaded into hammer.

Make sure the half-life.wad is loaded, or just retexture them.

What killer-duck is saying is correct, though it could also be a hammer glitch: Hammer, unbelievably, sometimes compiles a different map than you specify. This can be a very confusing/annoying glitch to say the least. (the reason I stopped using Hammer to compile my maps)

You could try renaming the map to fix the aformentioned glitch, or, for a much better solution: DO NOT USE HAMMER TO COMPILE.

I just compiled a diary/log of errors and mapping problems, and at least 1/3 of the trouble was directly caused by hammer compile process and Hammer-related glitches.

Seriously, do yourself a big favor, get batch compiler now!

I noticed this thread when recently having trouble with my own decals. Here's an exerpt from my error diary:

--"decals show in the editor but not in-game" ERROR:

Decals turn out to be pretty versatile, but they're touchy. If they don't show up, check you have done these things:

-Decals must be applied to a world brush (if you want them on a brush-based entity, you must apply the decals BEFORE you change the brush to-entity.

-Don't move the brush that has the decals, or try to select the decals themselves to move them--they will not show up after compile.

-if decals are on a sliding door and the door is recessed in a wall, the decals won't be rendered. (making the recessed area hollow and lit should fix this)

I realize this is a huge bump, but at least someone searching for this problem will be able to find the answer, and not spend 2 hours themselves figuring why they're not working : P

(This info was not included in the tutorial or anywhere I could find)

Me use steam; I just don't liek looking at the splash, but not a big deal at all, I could just change the splash screen to pure black, right?! :P

You might make the mapnames double-clickable if it's not too hard... I keep doubleclicking them, looking away to relax for a second, and noticing nothing happens! Or even a "start map" button.

Yeah, or even better do toggle switches for -sv_cheats 1 -dev, -console, or just automatically load them by default (what would it hurt).

Yeah, the big problem was though It wasn't acceptin the speed changes from the path tracks, so, no acceleration. : )

btw you edit blocked me I was just editing my last post saying I got it to work, well, I didn't get the tracktrain to work, but I just made it a func_train, and now it accepts the speed changes from the paths.

And on that note btw I found changing a tracktrain to a train gives you that pesky "SV_StartSound" error automatically. Some value from the tracktrain makes your train VOLUME value 10, which it can't be greater than 1.0, or you know what happens! = )

My entry done this morning. (i hope) I went a little crazy detailing the map around the mechanisms, so watch out!

If we ever do this challenge again, I have 100 new ideas... all spawned from doing this one. We should have a Rube Goldberg 2 someday!

The splash screen and console still loads visibly (is it supposed to), but other than that, works great! I can pick maps from all my mods! :badass:

Now make a version that runs the game without loading up the steam (force offline mode, whether you have internets or no), and I'll have your babies = )

I'm beginning to see what you mean (c)Striker... the quirkiness of trains and some other stuff is beginning to get annoying, but it IS a challenge ; )

On that note, I'm having a problem with my tracktrain, maybe someone could look... The problem lies with changing the speed of the train after it's triggered, to make it appear like it's accelerating down or freeballing.

More precisely, I can't figure out the INITIAL SPEED and SPEED fields.

I want the train to not move before it's triggered. If I set the INITIAL SPEED to zero and some other value for the SPEED field, the train travels only at the rate specified under SPEED, and ignores all the PATH_TRACK velocity changes.

If I set a slow INITIAL SPEED, the train will accept the speed changes, but then the train starts moving automatically with no trigger when the map starts.

I've seen this done in maps, so I know it can be done... I just can't figure it out.

What's supposed to happen is you shoot the target (button), it triggers the downward door mechanism, and the ball freeballs down a rail. ( i didn't build the rail yet)

I don't know what's been posted, so forgive If I repeat:

Map vault:
-multiple screenshots with thumbs--liek snarkpit.
-Inculde the entire text/comments for the map in the search, that is if you search the map vault, the comments text will be included.
-maybe make a thing so you can upload your own game icon if there is none? (maybe)

Tutorials:
-improve the search functionality (i'm sure you're already doing)
-make tutorials have comments like verc and again, include the comments in the tutorial search database.

That's all I can think of now.

And, I've been thinking, do any forums have a "squelch" feature? that is, you could make the threads/posts or maybe even just the text of any member you choose invisible/nonexistent. would be nice for trolls or people who persitently get on you. No idea what this would entail since I'm no coder... (imake mods squelchable too! lol kidding but serious = ) )

Speaking of caves (if we do a cave challenge), I just watched a really cool episode of BBC world: Caves.

Watch (it worked yesterday but doesn't seem to be now, prolly be up later...)

Not only is there cool reference material for cave-making ideas, but It's funny how many cave-dwelling creatures featured in the show resembled HL monsters! A barnacle-like creature among others.

The deep caves also have mudkips! (I'M NOT JOKING!) There's these eyeless salamanders with external lungs that look a lot liek them!

This just started.

When I load half-life, and start a game (map mapname), the screen freezes as it says creating server or whatever, and it stays like that indefinitely.

I thought maybe my firewall was prompting for access "under" the splash screen, and I couldn't acknowledge, but no: repeatedly pressing "A" for allow does nothing.

CTRL-ESC, ALT-TAB, show desktop (windows sign + D) all do nothing. I can't even shut down (windows sign + u + u or ALT + F4 repeatedly + T).

My only way is to manually hold down the power button : (

I tried validate game cache files to no avail.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so did you figure out the problem?

edit: It was my entity challenge map causing the trouble! I've never had a map "freeze" my HL before, but this map does it. (I tried restarting and running other maps, and they all run fine)

Thats a new one for me! = )

edit2: I figured a way to get out of the half-life gui after it freezes:

Hit ctrl+alt+del, and then hit alt-e until you see the desktop.

Maybe YOU can run the map... Care to try? = )

edit3: Last edit lol! all this trouble was caused by having a path_track targeting itself ( Path_Track NAME and NEXT STOP ON TARGET had the same name).

I don't know if this is the only factor, but fixing the path made the map runnable again!

Yeah I couldn't tell, looks ok to me but who knows!

Tetsu0: Regarding "SV startvolume errors": is that caused by the by the sound of your train being too loud (I got a similar/same error with a train).

My entry is taking a long time too, and my setups are not even very complicated... At the beginning I couldn't think of what to do, and now it just seems to take forever to complete even one segment of the "machine".

Almost done though, I only have 2 segments to go and I'm calling it finished! = ) (hopefully tomorrow)

Kinrah:

"GoldSource doesn't have the engine for it"

True it's time consuming and you have to keep some of the limitations in mind when trying certain things, but there's a TON you can do with goldsource!

YOU SHOULD MAKE ONE = )

Excellent! TBH I don't think you even need the camera version as your regular version is better imo. You cans see everything, and the guy can noclip if he wants more detail.

Really nice base map improvements too, it has a much nicer feel to it now! = )

Mine started really slow, but things are getting better... it's much harder to come up with ideas then I thought it would be. If I had to do this over again, I would make a nice base map and shape the mechanisms around the maps construction, because I think it would be easier... like a grocery store ; )

In the distance, around the mountain, a mighty truck-like sound can be heard growing louder... is it, can be?...

edit: oh okey, try what tosse said, and:

-make sure your verticies are on-grid. (they don't really have to be on grid but where one object connects to another, the verticies must reside on the SAME EXACT POINT or you get a "gap".)

People say "on-grid" all the time, because unless you're using the scale feature (alt-e) or translating the objects in some other way, the ONLY other way to keep from seeing seams or gaps is to align each set of verticies on an actual grid point.

Toggle "snap to grid" if you haven't already, and adjust the grid size using the "[" and "]" as needed.

When all else fails, just try remaking the object or the copy/paste method of pasting the object in a new .rmf, or simply deleting it and bring it back as a prefab or some such.

Haha very nice and you dressed up the map itself too! If you still want more suggestions, stuff I noticed:

-In camera view, you miss the point where the water makes the circuit and powers the pushing machine. Simply panning back a little farther would fix.

-the domino walls are cool but blocky and unimagniantive compared to everything else. I would make them more slight, or you could do a more advanced formation/seqence.

-The base map is nice but could be redesigned/improved further. More detail = more realistic. It doesn't matter technically since it's an entity challenge, but it improves so much the overall presentation.

let me know if you want me to give a try at making the camera togglable, and I'll give it a go.

I'll shut up for now, unless you want more! = )

TJB: Are you using the latest fgd? In some fgds the button health is set to 1 so you have to shoot the button before you can "use" it. (stabbing in the dark) Post a link to one of your maps that doesn't work, and I'll check it using my hammer if you want.

It's been a while since I've dealt with water, but can't you dictate the direction and speed it "fills"?

The "stuttering" is caused by God's astonishment and disgust that you have more than enough money to upgrade, but your pinching pennies on something as important as your own gaming machine. : O

Seriously, ur running a single core athelon processor, whilst quibbling about getting the best "bang for your buck" on your $80 gfx card (probably a cheap normal-aspect-ratio flat screen too?!), while you can EASILY afford better; you should be smited and/or the truck should hurry up an get here.

Get a nice core 2 duo system with a nice shiny geforce card, and you'll sleep better...

It's a joke and an insult to the majority of us poor guys! = )
