I have six email accounts so that I can use some of them as junk email black holes.

When a site asks me for my email, I just provide one of these dummy accounts.

Holy fecal matter! I'm glad you're able to post again.

You can't take it too seriously. It's a defense mechanism in dealing with a horrific situation. But oftentimes we all need to make fun of ourselves to keep our sanity.

Congratulation on surviving the whole ordeal. How many medkits did they have to use to revive you?

It's hard to believe, but this college course is every gamer's dream come true.

...and it's happening at Berkeley, no less.

But I guess I shouldn't be so surprised. After all, it's the school that generated the Una-Bomber and have naked students cavorting around the campus.

It's mighty cool though. This means that gaming is being more accepted by main stream culture finally. It's not just for geeks and nerds anymore.

Oops! My bad.

I just found out that what's making my computer freeze up and take more than ten minutes to reboot is my stupid Zonet fax modem.

I thought I could just leave the modem in my computer and ignore it. But apparently it's confusing the BIOS and the computer has a hard time reconciling it when rebooting.

After I removed the modem from the PCI slot, the computer boots fine again, and it's stable.

But the Ad-Aware licensing annoyance was enough for me to uninstall it anyway. I don't miss it.

I installed Ad-Aware this morning, because I was concerned that the Zonet website for the fax modem gave my computer some cooties.

However, after I installed Ad-Aware, I realized that the Ad-Aware Free itself is actually a spyware.

Beware of this software. After I installed it, it rummaged through my HDD and caused my computer to crash repeatedly.

Even with a hard restart, the computer took 10 minutes to reboot and I had to manually uninstall this piece of shit.

Be careful.

possibly a problem with the PCI slot or the motherboard?
I doubt that's the case, since when I powered on the computer, Vista recognized that a new hardware was installed immediately and proceeded to automatically install the driver for it.

But after the installation claimed to be successful, I can't find the modem from the computer.

I'll look into the BIOS, and I'll keep trying contacting the tech support at Zonet.

Zonet support seems to suck, since they don't even have a live person talking to me. I could just leave a message and no one ever calls me back.

I have already reported the company to BBB.

in Fax Modem Problem Post #261776
I bought a Zonet ZFM5621MT fax modem for $10 because I need to send faxes via my computer. My old fax machine finally broke.

However, I cannot figure out how to send faxes through this damn thing.

I thought I would just send the document to a fax/printer driver using the "Print" command, but there's no fax modem device under "Printers".

When I looked in the Control Panel under "Phone and Modem Options", the computer does not detect a modem.

When I powered up my computer after installing the modem into a PCI slot, Vista reports that it had successfully installed the driver for the hardware (it didn't specify what kind of hardware though, but I figure it must be the fax modem since it was the only new thing that I installed).

I also manually downloaded the fax modem driver from Zonet (the manufacturer), and I installed it. It also reports that the driver had been successfully installed.

However, I still don't see any modem under Device Manager or in the Control Panel.

What the heck is going on here? Contacting Zonet support is a failure, because I just got a voice mail. No one has gotten back to me after many hours of waiting.

Does anyone have any idea?

Windows 7 uses the same kernel as Vista. XP has something completely different. Some may argue that XP's kernel is a lot more efficient than the Vista kernel.

Microsoft really shouldn't call it Windows 7.

It's really just a SP2 release for Vista.

Except Microsoft makes everyone pay for it, of course.

Paint.NET loads instantly.

Besides, it does everything that I want to do. I think PS is just too bloated.

I tried out Paint.NET

It's such a nice program. It does everything that most people want (including myself), yet it is not bloated like many other graphics editors.

It comes with a 64-bit version, and it works well with Vista. For me, there is no delay whatsoever when I load the program, and all the operations are done in the blink of an eye.

I love it!

yah but what's the point of a desktop with nothing on it?
I have the Taskbar on my desktop, and I use that. It's all I need.

I have shortcut keys assigned to every single program on my computer. I have memorized them all. It's much more efficient and faster to start programs that way, compared to using the mouse to click around.

You gotta admit. The DOS command line is powerful, and its power lies in the fact that all commands are available at your fingertips. No menu navigation or mousing around is necessary.

far cry 2 is lovely in short doses.
Well, I guess that's the perfect game for me then.

I only have about two hours a week to play FarCry 2, so the gameplay doesn't become tedious.

It will probably take me six months to finish FarCry 2 at this rate, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. FarCry 2 came free with my new graphics card (the EVGA GTX 260), so it's just an added bonus to my nice hardware.

I have turned almost everything in Vista off, so it's just XP 64-bit with a prettier interface.

The 64-bit part is important, because I have 8 GB of RAM. Regular 32-bit OS would not be able to handle that.
