I pick Tetsu0's. Ant222's was nice and very original, but also uncompiled/textured, which means a lot... ( I hope we get more than 3-4 votes, lol = ) )

You should make one too Redka!

It's a cool idea for a challenge! maybe set some base dimensions or make a little base map. I would google a bunch of railings/balconies for ideas, and make some nice supports/buttresses if you can see the balcony from outside.

Well crap you did such a nice job on the pillar... well, maybe you can join the next?! : (

Updated hypercube:

http://captain0terror.googlepages.com/hypercube0012.zip

hypercube0009: normal/additive/125
hypercube0010: fast flicker/additive/125
hypercube0011: faster flicker/additive/137
hypercube0012: fast wide pulse/additive/105

They all look neat and different imo, that's why they're all in the download.

I probably should've done all the variations together in one map, with a bunch of different settings, but alas, I can't spend any more time on this! = )

Thanks to Tetsu0/srry: you make my heart warm = )

Agreed. It would be nice to have more players... Maybe the 3-4 of us who always participate should make a mod together!

On an unrelated idea, here is my hypercube version:

http://captain0terror.googlepages.com/hypercube0007.zip

If I demand more time, I would like to experiment with render options and other stuff to make the effect better. I used separate func_walls for each cross section, which made the effect a lot better than making the whole a single entity.

Sounds really good. I never played Someplace Else, but I have it downloaded, and have planned on playing it for a while. Have to check it out. = )

Coop things are great if you can get people to do what they say they will do.

I like the idea of passing around a map with assignments or not, but too bad you couldn't make an evolving/revolving map without having to wait for the next person to finish... I mean, it could take ages. (either you'd have to make it really simple or very precise insturctions/restrictions)

Anyway I think it's a great idea!

Post a real question, post a link to your map, or search other maps as examples an compare to yours. I found this one in the map vault:

Here's my final for #6:

http://captain0terror.googlepages.com/geometry60003.zip

I used alt-e to taper the top and bottom of each column so there thinner
and tapered now. The capital parts of the columns are also scaled down using alt-e, but no big visible errors, so I'm leaving them that way rather than redesigning.

Hope somebody else joins in before the end... it was so much fun! : )

-light_environment wasn't working because of my sky brushes weren't textured every face with sky.

-the light was coming through brush seams because of some off-grid verticies.

Geometry challenge #5: Make a hypercube.

Since nobody knows what they really look like, you can really make it whatever you want, but it should look super fancy and exoticly cubish. (If you're struggling for ideas, image search "hypercube", 4-dimensional, or check out one of the many web pages dedicatated to them.

Tetsu0:It's amazing you can do that dome without HLFix...

Imo hammer is flakey enough with brush errors to have to worry about seams that look fine in-editor, and then mess up (overlap inexplicably, look jagged) after compile; HLFix eliminates that annoyance!

Tetsu0: Yay! I followed your dome tutorial so thanks to you! = ) Do you use HLFix on your dome?

I don't really know what you mean by 12 sides tho, I mean at the top where the slices of the sphere come together, there are 12... that's what I thought you meant (or 3 wedges per 90 degrees).

I'll come up with a compo 5 in a little while!

Redka: Yeah like the first one is how i did it too. I can't get the sides to line up after compile perfectly without using HLFix (I would highly recommend anyone using hammer to use it).

Someone said in mapping tips you can use the arch tool to make domes, but i dunno... actually I think there is an old VERC tutorial about it : /

in VIS just fails ... Post #243218
If it happens again, I'll try the things you all have suggested, thanks! ( I wish I would have kept the corrupted map for testing purposes!)

EDIT:

This happened again, and I figured out the problem.

It's caused from overly-complex brushes or just a shitload of complicated geometry (i got this in my mobius map). Here's some fixes... all of these work independently:

-Under CSG run with "-cliptype precise" switch.
  • (full vis has no effect)
-Make the complex stuff func_walls

-I dunno if the copy/paste method Tetsu0 mentioned would work... I wish I would have tested it! (Again, I didn't save the offending map for further testing purposes like a moron).

-obviously, you can remake the whole thing! = )

Hope this helps somebody!

I added 4 blocks to an error free map and VIS just refused to run after that.

I run the -chart parameter to tell what resources are being used and everything is fine.

There is no error in the compile log, i just get a "windows encountered an error" message and vis.exe shuts down. ( the rest of the compile completes)

Does it in both hammer 3.5 and batch compiler.

I reverted to a previous version and everything is fine now, but I spent hours looking for a problem and couldn't find anything and I have no idea what caused it to happen ( i didn't saved the messed-up map unfortunately)

It's not really what I meant, but essentially the same thing I guess if we go with a base map everyone likes. The base map I was envisioning was really just one room, and then we could expand the room for further texture contests--sort of an evolving basemap I guess.

Whatever we decide on, I like where this is headed! = )

"Too bad I suck at making textures."

It's the whole point of the challenge! ; ) I also agree with The Hunter that texturing is a hugely important aspect of mapping. The more I map the more important I think texturing is; a nicely textured flat wall or simple structure looks better than fancy, time-consuming world geometry in many cases.

"Captain Terror, it's your idea, so you organise it, mate =]"

oh kkk. I can make the base map, but if someone has wants to make it (Rimrook) you wouldn't have to be disqualified from the challenge: we can vote the winner from a consensus of the the participants.

I'm going to start with a really simple basemap and then we can make it more detailed as we go (you'll have to create fewer textures for the newer compos) I'll make the basemap now and upload. If you guys don't like it we can use another.

It's the same as the last one afaik! = )

A wedge doesn't come to a point like ur pyramid, but has 2 vertices at the "point" instead... like if you cut a cube in half at a 45 it would give u 2 wedges.

And Yeah, it's kind of a weird problem to understand... I guess I just got on a kick about creating shapes out of minimum number of 4-sided shapes, and at the time I thought it was a lot more interesting than it really is.

It is a good practice to play around with using the 4-sided shapes for complex geometry though: it's the cleanest, error-free way to build stuff.

For the record I don't think it's possible to build a wedge from 2 4-sided shapes, but there are other things I've felt a lot more sure of that turned out to be false. : )

A wedge has 5 sides and 6 verticies.

You built a 4-sided pyramid ( 5 sides, 5 vertices). Are you saying you can't make the wedge from those 2 4-sided forms?

I can make a cube using 4 4-sided blocks (3-sided pyramid or spike). In my mind it would follow I'd be able to make a wedge out of only two of these. Is it possible?

First person to prove his answer either way wins the prize! (Use a hammer source file (rmf) to prove your answer.
