Damn, the symptoms you are mention happening on your PC, is almost exactly like the ones I just had on my PC yesterday. At first it was random freezing ups, then it just completely froze up every time I rebooted, again and again. My guess is, it had to be some kind of funky malware - virus, trojan or whatever. Even when I had Avast do a scan, that to froze up in mid scan! I know it could not have been a critical hardware problem, because if it would have been, the booting sequence would not have reach all the way to displaying the desktop. So, the way I saw it, I only had one option left: Format the hard drive and do a clean install of Windows. It was the only way to really get rid of whatever bug was damaging Windows. Yes, I know - all my personal files were lost, but it was either that, or keep my PC as an expensive paper weight.

Dr. Strangelove....Oh man, does that bring back memories. That's a true American classic, Hollywood just don't make movies like that anymore. Did you know that the Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry? That's truly an honor.

And you know what? It's actually on the AFI' 100 Years?100 Laughs list! It's on the #3 spot, though if it was up to me, I will have it at #1.

"Inferior solution"?

K-Lite codec pack, Media Player Classic, Media Player Codec Pack, SMPlayer, CCCP and VLC all have one thing in common: They are all the SAME SHIT! They all do THE SAME SHIT! Sure, they got different names and come from different places, but in the end, they all have the same function that meet the same ends.

Once again....."Inferior solution"?......Do you see now how dumb that sound now? None of the above solutions are either inferior or superior, they all accomplish the same thing equally, more or less. Just because somebody says that something "is the one and only media player" does not make it so, it's just an opinion, that's all.

Also, saying that everybody else "fail at life" is not a good idea either.

True. You can thank Ronald Reagan for that.

Good for you, Mighty Atom. SMPlayer does have it's own codecs, probably even more than the Media Player Codec Pack have. If you remove the Media Player Codec Pack, it won't affect SMPlayer, but it will affect Windows Media Player. You will be better off just leaving both intact, this way you will have two different great media players to choose from whenever you need to, why limit yourself to just one when you can have two, right?

In that case, uninstall the K-Lite codec pack. Now, install the following updated Media Player Codec Pack, version 3.9.2.:

http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html

Once you do this, your windows media player should play just about every known video and audio format out there.

Also, there is this other stand alone media player that I also use, it practically plays 100% of all known formats, it has all the codec's it needs built in, it's free and it' called "SMPlayer". This is the player that I use to play MKV files or other movies with subtitles not hard coded in:

I never got to play the Qbasic version of Gorillas like Saribous pointed out, but I did play a flash version of it a few times some years ago. Here's one site I found where they have it ready to play for free if you are interested: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Moly/gorillas-bas

Also, a sequel was made to this game, "Gorilla 2: The Return". This one is not a flash game, it is a stand alone .exe, and freeware to. Here's a quote from the download site:
Gorilla 2: The Return is packed with new additions, including an entire arsenal of banana types, more gorilla characters, enhanced graphics, and the ability to play online! Your goal is to hit your opponent by varying the angle and power of your throw, taking into account wind speed, wind direction, gravity, and the city skyline.
I myself already downloaded and installed Gorilla 2 on my PC, and I can say that it is a very good blast from the past, real old school fun! It's a decent improvement from the original. Oh yea, it installs and runs on Vista without no problems, though I do not know how it does with Windows 7.

Oh damn, that's right.....I forgot all about the 5 1/4" disks! If I remember correctly, they were around before the 3.5" diskettes were. And yes, you are right satchmo, the 5 1/4" disks were more flimsier than the 3.5" ones, I remember now. I also remember seeing some PC's equipped with both the 5 1/4" and 3.5" drives.

Most of you here won't remember this, but back in the olden days there was once a version of Windows called 3.1. It was unstable, plain-looking, clunky, virtually feature free, and we liked it. Want to know what it was like without actually loading it up on a real PC? Just go to this website, and there it is in all (well, some of) its glory:

http://www.michaelv.org

It's a clever creation by a programer called Michael Vincent, using JavaScript to let you operate a replica of Windows 3.1 that feels remarkably like the real thing. You can even fire up MS DOS and type in a few choice commands that actually work. Heck, it's even slow like computers were back then.

I stand corrected then. Apparently the first MP3 player was one called "MPMan F10", manufactured by Korea's Saehan Information Systems and launched in March 1998. The Rio PMP300 from Diamond Multimedia was the 2nd MP3 player, it was introduced in September 1998, a few months after the MPMan. After the further release of 2 or 3 more digital player models, it was not until October of 2001, that the first generation iPod (5GB) was released to the public.

Oooops, there goes me and my salesman way of posting again, sorry. But you got to admit it though, it will be very interesting to see what exactly this iSlate will be able to do in the middle of it's own massive hype.....

Even though you make a good point there ZombieLoffe, I must point out one little exemption: The iPod. As far as I know, prior to the introduction of the original iPod, there was no device out there in the market that would be considered in the same class as what the iPod came to be. The nearest thing would have been portable CD players with a built in MP3 decoder, allowing for the playback of "MP3 CD's", which would translate to a standard blank CD-R holding about 10 hours of MP3 audio, more or less.

in 2010 CES: My two favorite tech demos Post #278043
I agree, Strider.

Though most likely somebody also said the same thing you just did when the very first 42 inch plasma TV model that was only 720p resolution was first shown in Japan over 20 years ago. It does not make any sense to market this new 4K screen technology now, the world is just simply not ready for it yet. Now, some niche sectors like corporate trade shows or Hollywood movie studio production houses might find a need for this 4K screening technology, but that's pretty much it. But just like the first plasma TV model from the 1990's, just give it some time, the market will eventually catch up with 4K TV's.

Also, what do you think about that 2010 Core i7 processor?

in 2010 CES: My two favorite tech demos Post #278039
I'm sure some of you here have already seen coverage of most of the new technology that was displayed at this past CES. Of all the incredible stuff that I saw so far from this year's CES, two particular technology demonstrations come to mind, due to the fact that they could very well have a strong impact on the video gaming industry, at least in the long term.

First up, is Intel's 2010 Core i7 processor. Boy, did they do an upgrade on this baby! Who ever thought that a single CPU could play, stream and render massive amounts (hundreds of them) of bandwidth intensive, High Definition multi-media feeds all at once! Oh, and on top of that, easily rival the best, top of the line discreet graphic cards out there, by playing the most graphically demanding 3D video games at high frame rates, with all effects turned on, all done strait from the CPU alone! I know, that's some pretty tough talk there, heck......I don't believe it myself. Well, apparently the mighty Intel has gone out of their way to back up their claims:

Source #1: http://dvice.com/archives/2010/01/intel-infoscape.php
Source #2; http://scoop.intel.com/2010/01/intel-infoscape-all-the-buzz-at-ces

The second other tech demo that wowed me, was Panasonic's radically big 152 inch plasma TV! But what makes this big screen monster special is not so much it's huge size, but it's native screen resolution. You see, this one TV makes a so called "Full HD 1080p Screen Resolution" TV look like obsolete shit already. How? Oh,.....it's resolution is set at a new HD format called "4K", which translates to 4096 x 2160 pixels! In other words, we are talking about a TV with a "2160p" screen resolution! To quote the source article: "that's 8 million pixels, four times the resolution of today's puny 1920 x 1080p 2 million pixel displays". But sadly to say, this TV will not see the light of day as far as mass production is concerned, it's only meant as a demo prototype. But hey, the fact that it even exists is incredible enough for me. Who knows, maybe in 10 to 15 years from now it might come to market.......

I think something that should be mentioned about MMO's, is that some people's lives have been affected very negatively. Many players that devote too many hours a day to MMO's or any other type of game or virtual worlds for that matter, have had their marriages end in divorce. And worst yet, there's been a few cases where some have committed suicides. A good example of this is the famous case of one Shawn Woolley, who was a devoted fan of Everquest, and thus ended his life by blowing his brains out with a gun due to a relationship break up in the game. I know, some people are crazy, but shit happens for a reason......

As for your scanner not being compatible with Windows 7, have you tried on checking on your scanner manufacture's website for an updated driver that's Windows 7 ready to the particular model number of your scanner? If you have not done so, you should try it, most often than not an updated device driver will fix a device's incompatibility problem with a newer operating system.

You know.....if you really want to make a game to sell and are on a limited budget & resources, the hell with Valve then. First, just like any other business venture, you need to start small and work your way up gradually. You also need to do a self-reality check and ask yourself: Do you have the will, skills and resources to pull this off?

The only people I ever hear about making a lot of money on the PC gaming market are the big companies. Rarely do I ever hear about a regular individual making a substantial amount of money as a PC games developer.

Now, the one platform I do keep hearing about where hundreds of regular folks on a daily basis with some only having marginal skills, are making themselves tons of money, is none other than Apple's app store! Developing for the iPhone/iPod is not as hard or expensive as you might think.

There's just no going back now with the quality level of CGI that was being used prior to Avatar. Now with this new generation of "special effects awesomeness" out in the open, it should be interesting to see how the other big-wig Hollywood hotshots like Spielberg, Lucas, Bay, Abrams and a few others will meet the challenge that Cameron put out.
