The Snarkpit losing a few of the newer and attached "newbie" crowd to refind (that's not a word) it's identity would not be a bad thing, TBH !
Couldn't agree more...maybe we could do with a cull here?

Problem is that n00bs add life, annoying but out of 2000 idiots there is always one gem willing to produce content and help out.

The whole HL mod community is huge these days, resources like Snarkpit are no longer premier sites.. Sad, but that's the way it is.
Have you had a look at VERC recently, how dead is that... apparently there is a V2 in the making, but you think they would have thought of that a while back and had it on-line for HL2.

I honestly wish Snarkpit all the best, it is as I said a great resource and hopefully it will rise from the ashes, if not for anything else, then for the great tutorials.
Who needs Snarkpit when you hav TWHL and HL2files etc.
You do.
If you haven't figured it out yet, then let me say it again....
Sticking around the same site does not allow you to learn.
TWHL is predominantly a n00b site, once you have learnt all we have to offer, you are encouraged to seek out more and (hopefully) pop back in to let us know 'new' things.
Check the profiles for 'great' level designers here at TWHL... all of them have affiliations with other sites.

Will anyone here actually go back to Snarkpit when it is up and running?

Oh indeed Andy, don't get my evil words wrong - and it's just an opinion after all ;)

I know a community needs fresh blood all the time otherwise it would die on it's feet. The "old crowd" is more or less inactive now to a large extent, and the quieter members have stepped in or worked their way into the community and kept it alive. I just get frustrated when people don't read Stickies, rules or even peoples posts a lot of the time.

The advent of HL2 has created lots of ungrateful retches just farming for answers to mapping questions, and it's sad, but I expect common courtesy on the internet. Like you say, it's ballooned more than ever with HL2 and CS:S being released at the same time.

It's not all bad, new members and great new mappers keep on emerging and help each other along, it just seems the tides and tides of people who can't be bothered to help themselves abuse peoples good nature.

Never mind, it's the way it is.

I agree with Andy too habboi, you should use as many sites as possible to get the best of both worlds. If it comes across as "I think TWHL is a dump" it's not true at all. Having found this thread just to keep people updated, I've actually lurked and read a lot more posts here and it's a nice little community.

The last thing I want is some kind of inter-site bitchfest, because like Andy says, that's just silly.

/2cents :)

Don't complain, we don't even have either of the first two ;).

I know exactly what you mean, though, and I must say I agree wholeheartedly.

Snarkpit is a huge site and it's hard to keep people calm.

Sometimes to solve mapping problems you have to figure it out yourself like some of us here has!

I decompile maps made by Valve when I wanna see how things are done!

I was a mapper born and raised at TWHL. I learned the basics (and some advanced techniques) of mapping entirely from TWHL. Nothing can replace those wonderful memories of having my first map being downloaded by someone else across the continents and played for the first time.

And when I received the first positive feedback from the members (ministeve and Zombieloff in particular), I was so elated that I couldn't sleep for two nights. I kept on checking back at my map for new comments.

Call me geeky, but that's where my passion lies. A life without such passion isn't really worth living. And TWHL certainly provided that old flame when mapping begun for me.

TWHL is a special place, and it will always be. I spend time at the SnarkPit because I wanted to expand my horizon, but I'll never forget about TWHL.

Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that it's the little things in life that makes life so wonderful. I know it's just a website about computer entertainment, but without these little joy, life would be pretty dull and uninteresting.

For some people, it's cooking a gourmet meal for the ones you love. But for me, it's creating a fun map for fellow gamers to enjoy. TWHL makes it all possible.

One of the best online forum discussion occurred right here at TWHL. If anyone is interested, here is the link.

Have you had a look at VERC recently, how dead is that... apparently there is a V2 in the making, but you think they would have thought of that a while back and had it on-line for HL2.
HL2 documentation is simply in the form of the Source SDK site, not integrated with the actual VERC site (seeing as there's an upgrade in the works and it is so damn slow right now, there's no reason to). The actual situation with VERC is this:
  • The current VERC runs on a text DB, which is horrendously slow. The gigantic page load times probably scare away lots of the visitors.
  • Autolycus didn't have time before, preparing the Source SDK documentation and whatnot. But now he does, and he's apparently working on VERC v2.
  • Certain key contributors during the HL1 era have moved on and don't have much of an interest in modding anymore. (primarily DeathWish and Zipster, I guess)
  • There is no guarantee a VERC v2 would revive the dying VERC community in the first place. Most of the editors (myself included) are fairly lax these days; recently submitted articles just don't seem too interesting, personally (no offense to writers). They all deal with technical aspects of modding, like what buttons to push and such. These aren't articles, but rather... tutorials. Things that can basically be found anywhere else and are not unique to VERC.
  • HL2 is still relatively young, in terms of a modding community. Give it time. The limits of the Source engine haven't even been hit yet (although some mod teams claim to have done so, they're just lying through their teeth out of laziness or incompetence) I'm sure it'll eventually blossom into a beautiful butterfly that everyone will love and cherish, blah blah blah. :)

Geez Satchmo. Just go to Interlopers or 69th Vlatitude. If you want to talk about something.

Habboi, that's rubbish. Utter rubbish. If people aren't 'calm' its not because its a large site, its because they've been rubbed up the wrong way with wild accusations or totally moronic misinterpretations of obvious helpful posts. Generally people don't bite unless a specific member becomes mind numbing, and thread wasting. Even then its done as constructively as possible. Any flaming is quickly snipped by the moderators.

I don't see why you have to keep badmouthing a community when they DO NOT hate you and generally bent over backwards to correct, rather than ridicule you. You're not persecuted in the least, and its the rash comments that you post in threads like this, stemming from your paranoia that get's people's backs up.

Campaignjunkie,
Thank you for the update.. my words 'now' seem a little strong and no offense implied.
I just always saw VERC as the primary authoritive site and figured it would grow accordingly with HL2. (Unreal expectations? possibly)

As with all 'unpaid staff sites' content is only going to be there if the interest is generated amoungst the new blood and the old guy's hang in long enough to let them settle in.
Many people have level design talent, but that does not always translate into the ability to produce good content or moderate.

[As an inside thing, this debate has been raging at RUST for the last 8 months or so. It too is dying, although we might be lucky.
Lack of interest is not the major problem amoungst the staff.. the ability to keep up with new game design is. Jherax put it well when he say's that Real-Life™ interfers with Game-Life and eventually wins out altogether..]

The community in general has waxed and waned in a semi cyclic pattern over the last 6 years that I have been involved.
VERC may well rise again, as 69thVlatitude seems to have done for the umpteenth time (gotta love Archville's persistance).

Comments such as 'satchmo's' always encourage me to keep going...
As do all the rest of you, so I am sure that you will all join me in wishing
VERC and Snarkpit a speedy and successful recovery.
This isn't about who pisses you off... this is about resources!

The Snarkpit is still running strong and as for VERC I never visit that place so I'm not sure of its condition. I don't know why people would think that Snarkpit is dying. I think its got some healthy competition against Interlopers though. I hope to see 69th Vlatitude get some more content and maybe even the ressurection of Valve ERC sometime in the future.

Indeed, I hope Gard finish of his thesis quikly so he can come back.

And we should get after peeves so he finishes up his tutorial he is already working on for 2 years

I've heard rumors that Valver ERC my be ressurected someday. Maybe even this year. If not the whole site then just he Pixel Reviews. I hope they actually do begin updating the place again. The Pixel Reviews had some of the best TFC maps back in the day.
