Christianity is ridiculously inconsistent.

Blah blah all-merciful God... except for if he takes against you because of your tasteless tie, in which case, sorry, you're damned for all eternity in horrific pain, agony, more tasteless ties, soap operas, etc. Strange.

God gave us our own choice, whether we want to be saved or not to be saved. He doesnt decide, we do by our own actions.

For once, in the history of TWHL, I shall step into a religious debate and offer my views.

I am a Catholic. Have been so all my life, passed down from the family, etc, etc. Over these 17 years, I've heard a lot, seen a lot, experienced a lot concerning the fundamental basis of religious beliefs. One particular theory struck me as quite true:

"Religion is merely an answer to those who are looking for answer as to what happens after death."

Perhaps it's different for some, perhaps not. Take a look at most religions however: don't they all give an indication as to what "will" happen when you reach death? For Christianity, its the ascension into "Heaven", for Buddhists its enlightenment, etc, etc.
Of course, all religions have their own sets of beliefs, their own Gods and what-not.
Christianity is ridiculously inconsistent.

Blah blah all-merciful God... except for if he takes against you because of your tasteless tie, in which case, sorry, you're damned for all eternity in horrific pain, agony, more tasteless ties, soap operas, etc. Strange.
I do not consider religion to contain a wholy plausible story or some sort of "higher order", I merely see it as something for people to believe in. Now surely there's nothing wrong with believing in something, despite any shortcomings a particular religion might have.
I'd kick jesus in the balls. Take that, you bloody samarite, kind motherfucker!
Pretty lame and stupid comment if you ask me. I'm against attempting to force a religion towards those who don't have one (something that Christianity has done in history), but I think directly critiscing someone who is considered important to some people is rather immature. Now, I'm not saying that "Yes, you're wrong, we're right", I'm merely saying that sometimes you should respect the decisions of others, despite how crude or stupid you think they are.

I'm not a particularly religious person by nature. I'm not sure what happens after we die, nor do I know where we originated from. Personally, I tend towards the more scientific scope. However, I do respect those who do believe in the higher order. I do not feel a need to criticise them or subject them to pointless riddling: if they find solace in a particular belief, then let them be.

While I'm here, I may as well bring up another point: whilst on IRC last Christmas, I think Trapt and I had an arguement concerning the words "Merry Christmas" in the topic name. He said it was a slander to other religions. Despite the non-seriousness of the arguement, I'd like to say that the words "Merry Christmas" are not an invitation to accept the Christian faith, they are actually an embracment of a particular time of year where things wrap and the aura of festivities is in the here. It's more of a coming together of people, unified under a particularly joyous time of the year. THAT'S IT! Nothing more!

Well, that's my 2 and a half cents.

By the way, to the guys with the words "Proudly Christian" in their avatars: Isn't there a parable in the Bible that goes along the lines that a person quietly worshipping God is better than those who openly admit it? I believe it was about a man who was fasting, who would constantly tell people he was doing it. So, if you are "Proudly Christian", you wouldn't need to tell us, would you?

i put it cause i wanted to make a statement and i dont want to hide my faith from others. i want them to know.

You don't need to let them know. I bet hardly anyone knew I was Catholic until I posted it.

i think it is better to share my faith than to keep to myself. is it better to share with others or keep it all for yourself?
Posted 19 years ago2005-04-08 06:13:48 UTC Post #102482
Why would you share? Religion is a personal quest! You shouldn't be out trying to convert others and proclaiming you're of the religious sort! It should be a deep-felt, spiritual inner journey rather than being pointlessly displayed as some sort of talking point! Did you just ignore the parable I mentioned above?

J3r3my, Hrny, could you kindly explain to me exactly why there are so many other religions? Are you saying they're all wrong?

This thread has been derailed beyond redemption with Religious/America bashing/Firefox vs. Internet Explorer* debate spillage from other threads.

Conversational spillage is the number one cause of subborn post stains. The Association for Cleaner Forums suggest that all threads be wrapped in 2mm of cling film, and stored in a cool, dry place to avoid this. ;)
