I have never been so angry in my life and those damn custom textures makes me angry because mine don't work!!!

I made the vtf using vmex.exe from the .tga and filled the .txt with the bump map details (I got that part from the tutorial)

I placed the vtf, .txt and .tga in C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppshabboicounter-strike sourcecstrikematerialsmytexes

and also in

C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppshabboisourcesdk_contentcstrikematerialsrcmytexes

I opened Hammer and clicked new map. I went to texture browser and typed fence1 which is the name of my custom texture but annoyingly nothing appeared!

This must mean that it's in the wrong folder so I pasted it nearly everywhere in SDK folders and CSS folders!

Please help!

It's also worked for me, I dont remember how though

Making custom textures for source is a real pain in the ***, or at least lightyears away from the user friendly Wally Editor. I hope valve comes up with a nice texture editor (not the one that you can find today in some webpages) that can help us with the use of shaders. The whole file system and process for creating textures in STEAM/source seems a bit ridiculous compared to the quickness of Wally>>WAD :(

I know that the possibilities are greater now because of all these new properties, but in the year 2005 I find it hard to beleive we need to use a Notepad program to make a texture for a game.

Making a single texture for source takes as much time as It did to make a decent WAD file with textures from other wads.

good luck habboi

That's VTEX instead, right? VMEX is the map decompiler.

You need to rename your .txt to .vmt.

Ok Rabid my mistake it is VTEX I just wrote it wrong :S

Still I renamed my fence1.txt to fence1.vmt and it still remains a .txt document due to the icon still showing a notepad.

Anyway I placed it in the sdkcontent folder in a folder called mytexes.
Same in CSS folder as well but nada nothing kappeesh!

To those who have succeeded! Where do you place your .vmt or .vtf or whatever you file it is?

Please could you post a directory please!

Erm, means you actually see file extensions instead of adding .vmt before the real extension (i.e. mytex.vmt.txt)!
