[spam] ON the basis of the physical interpretation of distance which has been indicated, we are also in a position to establish the distance between two points on a rigid body by means of measurements. For this purpose we require a ?distance? (rod S) which is to be used once and for all, and which we employ as a standard measure. If, now, A and B are two points on a rigid body, we can construct the line joining them according to the rules of geometry; then, starting from A, we can mark off the distance S time after time until we reach B. The number of these operations required is the numerical measure of the distance AB. This is the basis of all measurement of length. 1 1
Every description of the scene of an event or of the position of an object in space is based on the specification of the point on a rigid body (body of reference) with which that event or object coincides. This applies not only to scientific description, but also to everyday life. If I analyse the place specification ?Trafalgar Square, London,? 2 I arrive at the following result. The earth is the rigid body to which the specification of place refers; ?Trafalgar Square, London? is a well-defined point, to which a name has been assigned, and with which the event coincides in space. 3 2
This primitive method of place specification deals only with places on the surface of rigid bodies, and is dependent on the existence of points on this surface which are distinguishable from each other. But we can free ourselves from both of these limitations without altering the nature of our specification of position. If, for instance, a cloud is hovering over Trafalgar Square, then we can determine its position relative to the surface of the earth by erecting a pole perpendicularly on the Square, so that it reaches the cloud. The length of the pole measured with the standard measuring-rod, combined with the specification of the position of the foot of the pole, supplies us with a complete place specification. On the basis of this illustration, we are able to see the manner in which a refinement of the conception of position has been developed. [/spam]

[spam]The human psyche gravitates toward extremes. Extreme cases are remembered while mundane ones are ignored. "All or nothing" seems written in our genes. Perhaps from a programming standpoint it's because border conditions are where problems arise in any plan. Whatever the reason, this bent is one of the primary problems humanity faces because the truth is always more likely to be in the middle 80% than the top and bottom 10%. I believe it has something to do with our initial learning mechanism needing absolutes of black and white, truth and falsehood to be able to take the next steps of reason. Shades of grey are only for adult human intellect IMHO.

Conspiracy: With regard to the notion that people are prone to extremes I will say to those who believe there are no conspiracies anywhere, "I envy your naivet? ". Ignorance truly is bliss is it not? I have no interest in educating you in every topic so for those who know of events even in fairly recent American history of people being given diseases etc just to see the results you see my point. Unfortunately there is also the group who see boogey men around every corner. I believe the answer to be somewhere in the middle.
Here is a question to ask yourself: If you were a military leader in a world where escalating technology continues to threaten the very existence of mankind. If you came in possession of advanced physics knowledge would you feel compelled to disseminate this information or would you instead guard it by whatever means possible even including perpetuating misleading information?
On this particular topic I'll continue to use Hanlon's Razor though. "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity"

True Genius and Insanity seem to be linked. By evidence, look at the reclusive and erratic behavior of Newton who died a virgin. Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest inventors of the previous century was thoroughly schizophrenic. He had an entire other world in his head. Edward Morley of the MMX was well known for his erratic behavior and social ineptness as was Einstein himself. Perhaps it is the ability to throw away all concepts of reality and build anew that allows genius to flourish. The point is that if a madman is the only witness to a crime the realness of the event is not diminished and just because a madman is able to recount some sane facts he has witnessed, it does not mean that all he says is sane.[/spam]

Isaac Newton's life can be divided into three quite distinct periods. The first is his boyhood days from 1643 up to his appointment to a chair in 1669. The second period from 1669 to 1687 was the highly productive period in which he was Lucasian professor at Cambridge. The third period (nearly as long as the other two combined) saw Newton as a highly paid government official in London with little further interest in mathematical research.

Isaac Newton was born in the manor house of Woolsthorpe, near Grantham in Lincolnshire. Although by the calendar in use at the time of his birth he was born on Christmas Day 1642, we give the date of 4 January 1643 in this biography which is the "corrected" Gregorian calendar date bringing it into line with our present calendar. (The Gregorian calendar was not adopted in England until 1752.) Isaac Newton came from a family of farmers but never knew his father, also named Isaac Newton, who died in October 1642, three months before his son was born. Although Isaac's father owned property and animals which made him quite a wealthy man, he was completely uneducated and could not sign his own name.

Isaac's mother Hannah Ayscough remarried Barnabas Smith the minister of the church at North Witham, a nearby village, when Isaac was two years old. The young child was then left in the care of his grandmother Margery Ayscough at Woolsthorpe. Basically treated as an orphan, Isaac did not have a happy childhood. His grandfather James Ayscough was never mentioned by Isaac in later life and the fact that James left nothing to Isaac in his will, made when the boy was ten years old, suggests that there was no love lost between the two. There is no doubt that Isaac felt very bitter towards his mother and his step-father Barnabas Smith. When examining his sins at age nineteen, Isaac listed:-

Threatening my father and mother Smith to burn them and the house over them.

Upon the death of his stepfather in 1653, Newton lived in an extended family consisting of his mother, his grandmother, one half-brother, and two half-sisters. From shortly after this time Isaac began attending the Free Grammar School in Grantham. Although this was only five miles from his home, Isaac lodged with the Clark family at Grantham. However he seems to have shown little promise in academic work. His school reports described him as 'idle' and 'inattentive'. His mother, by now a lady of reasonable wealth and property, thought that her eldest son was the right person to manage her affairs and her estate. Isaac was taken away from school but soon showed that he had no talent, or interest, in managing an estate.

An uncle, William Ayscough, decided that Isaac should prepare for entering university and, having persuaded his mother that this was the right thing to do, Isaac was allowed to return to the Free Grammar School in Grantham in 1660 to complete his school education. This time he lodged with Stokes, who was the headmaster of the school, and it would appear that, despite suggestions that he had previously shown no academic promise, Isaac must have convinced some of those around him that he had academic promise. Some evidence points to Stokes also persuading Isaac's mother to let him enter university, so it is likely that Isaac had shown more promise in his first spell at the school than the school reports suggest. Another piece of evidence comes from Isaac's list of sins referred to above. He lists one of his sins as:-

... setting my heart on money, learning, and pleasure more than Thee ...

which tells us that Isaac must have had a passion for learning.

Around 1886 Albert Einstein began his school career in Munich. As well as his violin lessons, which he had from age six to age thirteen, he also had religious education at home where he was taught Judaism. Two years later he entered the Luitpold Gymnasium and after this his religious education was given at school. He studied mathematics, in particular the calculus, beginning around 1891.

In 1894 Einstein's family moved to Milan but Einstein remained in Munich. In 1895 Einstein failed an examination that would have allowed him to study for a diploma as an electrical engineer at the Eidgen?ssische Technische Hochschule in Zurich. Einstein renounced German citizenship in 1896 and was to be stateless for a number of years. He did not even apply for Swiss citizenship until 1899, citizenship being granted in 1901.

Following the failing of the entrance exam to the ETH, Einstein attended secondary school at Aarau planning to use this route to enter the ETH in Zurich. While at Aarau he wrote an essay (for which was only given a little above half marks!) in which he wrote of his plans for the future, see [13]:-

If I were to have the good fortune to pass my examinations, I would go to Zurich. I would stay there for four years in order to study mathematics and physics. I imagine myself becoming a teacher in those branches of the natural sciences, choosing the theoretical part of them. Here are the reasons which lead me to this plan. Above all, it is my disposition for abstract and mathematical thought, and my lack of imagination and practical ability.

Indeed Einstein succeeded with his plan graduating in 1900 as a teacher of mathematics and physics. One of his friends at ETH was Marcel Grossmann who was in the same class as Einstein. Einstein tried to obtain a post, writing to Hurwitz who held out some hope of a position but nothing came of it. Three of Einstein's fellow students, including Grossmann, were appointed assistants at ETH in Zurich but clearly Einstein had not impressed enough and still in 1901 he was writing round universities in the hope of obtaining a job, but without success.

He did manage to avoid Swiss military service on the grounds that he had flat feet and varicose veins. By mid 1901 he had a temporary job as a teacher, teaching mathematics at the Technical High School in Winterthur. Around this time he wrote:-

I have given up the ambition to get to a university ...

Another temporary position teaching in a private school in Schaffhausen followed. Then Grossmann's father tried to help Einstein get a job by recommending him to the director of the patent office in Bern. Einstein was appointed as a technical expert third class.

Einstein worked in this patent office from 1902 to 1909, holding a temporary post when he was first appointed, but by 1904 the position was made permanent and in 1906 he was promoted to technical expert second class. While in the Bern patent office he completed an astonishing range of theoretical physics publications, written in his spare time without the benefit of close contact with scientific literature or colleagues.

Short briefing on the flight[b/]

[b]Forces of flight

An aircraft needs to forces to fly: lift to keep it up and thrust to propel it forward. Lift overcomes the plane's weight, and thrust overcomes the drag caused by air flowing past the plane. When an aircraft is cruising, lift is equal to weight and thrust is equal to drag.
Lift

<--Thrust (AIRCRAFT) -->Drag

v
Weight
Flying controls

An aircraft is steered through the air by way of three main control surfaces - the elevators on the tailplane, the ailerons on the wings and a rudder under the fin.

Elevators - make the aircraft's nose tilt up and down.
Ailerons - make the aircraft roll from side to side.
The rudder - maks the aircraft 'yaw' left or right.

Aero engine types

An aircraft's engines drive it through the air by producing thrust. Different types of engine produce thrust in different ways. Piston and turbo-prop engines drive propellers that screw into the air, just as a ship propeller bites into the water. Turbo-jet and turbo-fan engines produces a fast moving stream of gas that pushes the aircraft forwards.

Piston engines

These work in the same way as car engines. Petrol and air vapour are mixed in the engines cylinder's and they cause an explosion. The explosions push the pistons, which turn a shaft. The shaft then turns the propeller.

Turbo-prop engines

The simplest type of jets. A turbo-jet engine with a propeller is called a turbo-prop engine. A motor turns the compressor and the propeller, which provides the main engine thrust.

Turbo-jet engines

Air is drawn in and compressed, then sent to a chamber where fuel burns. The gases produced are shot out of the back of the engine, which pushes the aircraft forwards, like a deflating balloon.

Turbo-fan engines

A hybrid of turbo-jet and turbo-props, the turbo-fan engine sucks in air, which is combined with the backdraft from the fan, and also sends air around the engine, producing the same effect as a propeller.

URB, Please hurry

pulse jet engines

A pulse Jet engine is one of the simplest types of engine. air is sucked in from the out side engine and mixed with fuel. the fuel is ignited and the shockwave moves through the engine and exits it. the reduced pressure now inside the engine force new air to be sucked in.

Ramjet engines

A ram jet engine works by using the crafts forward momentum to force air to be compressed. the compressed air is mixed with fuel and ignited. the force exits the rear of the engine and forces the craft forward, causing air to be ramed in and the process to be repeated.

SCRamjet engines

SCRam Jet engines work similar to Ramjets except that the air is not slowed to subsonic speed in the engine but kept moving at the rate they were forced in. this allows much higher max speeds.

WoHooo! I finished the next bit.

"Amber!" yelled Dan "You still keeping your cool over there?"

"Hell yeah." she stood up giving the strider the finger and diving back into cover before a barrage of plasma bashed the rocks just inches from her position. She lifted her head up and called out. "Missed!"

"You're fucking crazy!" yelled Fitz "Get over and help those guys."

"OK" she yelled and she crawled along the floor around to Dan and Fitz. She stood up, fired at the strider again and continued around the side of the rocks and out of view.

"Jesus." Said Mark. He looked up to see the strider turning to follow her. Mark swallowed hard and stood up, waving his arms in the air. The strider turned back to face and and he fired 2 more shots from the magnum. "Heeeyyyy!!! You bastard! Eat this."

"Amber's reached them!" yelled Fitz. waving the radio to Dan and Mark. "Take cover!"

The three men shoved themselved right into the rocks as 2 rockets fired simultainiously into the strider's rear end. It toppled forwards and lost its balance. Mark watched for a second, as it fell almost in slow motion. It crashed to the ground throwing up dust and debris. As it settled the lumbering beast came into view, laying motionless on the ground. Mark rose to his feet as three silhouettes danced through the fog.

"Tom! Josh!" yelled Dan "You crazy motherfuckers!"

The brothers stopped in front of Dan and saluted! They were grinning ear to ear and jumping on the spot like children. They spoke to Dan he was like an older brother.

"Dan," they said, thick cockney accents and never motionless on their feet "guess what we found. Go on, guess"

"Something edible I hope." He said

"Nope." giggled Tom, shaking his head frantically. The two brothers looked at each other, smiling. They turned back to Dan and pulled the watchcaps from their heads to reveal blone hair spiked up about 3 inches off the tops of their heads. "Hair gel!"

Dan burst into laughter. He knew these two well.

"This has just got pretty interesting." Fitz said as he stepped over to Mark and Amber.

"What do you mean?" Mark asked

"We were with the Halls last week when we started resisting against the combine. They helped me and Dan and the other guys storm an outpost on the canal. We didn't lose a single man. Those two are morale boosters on legs!" Fitz was grinning as much as the two brothers were. They skipped over and both wrapped their arms around him. "Hey hey, I can't breath."

"How ya been Fitzy?" said Tom, rubbing Fitz' head "Ya look knackered mate!"

"I'm fine." Fitz laughed and turned to Amber and Mark "Oh, this is Mark and Amber!"

"Hello both." Josh piped up. "Hope Fitzy's been looking after you two."

"Hey." said Fitz pointing to Amber "Watch it! She can look after herself."

"Oh really," said Tom winking to Amber "Maybe she can look after me too."

"In your dreams slimeball." she said back, grinning sarcastically "I'm with Mark."

Marks glance darted to Amber.

"What?" he gasped

"Don't worry." she whispered "I just don't want one of these creeps following me around, trying to protect me and all that. Just play along."

"Ok people." Dan strided over "Listen up. We are heading back to City 17 to re-arm and reinforce. Don't know if you've noticed but its just the six of us now. Eli's place is overrun so the real fight will be in the city and six people aren't going to last long the closer we got to the citadel"

"Hey," Josh interupted "Where's your brother Dan?"

Dan froze. He looked to Mark and Fitz. Tom and Josh turned to them.

"What happened to Todd?" Tom asked. Fitz shook his head in reply. Tom sat down on one of the battle scarred rocks "Oh Jesus."

"Lets move out." said Dan.

The six fighters moved across the grassy hills back toward to towering machine that continued to churn the land all night. The sun was rising when they reached the citie's edge, creating a pattern of dark shadows across the streets as the orange light ripped through the gaps between the tall buildings. They reached a battered old building with a huge sliding door set into the front wall.

"Wait till you see what thats for." grinned Josh. Tom was laughing behind him. The brothers lead the way around the back of the garage and unlocked the back door. As the door opened there was a strong smell of engine oil, stale beer, and greasy food. Pizza boxes were strewn about the floor. A Cd player was droning out some music at its lowest volume. Some scuzzy rock music that must have been at least 20 years old now.

They rounded the corner into the main portion of the building. The ceiling was about 14 feet up and the place was filled with battered furniture. Right at the back near the large shutter doors was a combine APC.

"Woah." said Dan "How did you get that here?"

"It was parked outside one morning. Don't know where it came from but sombody had already broken the locks off the doors. One of the wheels was damaged so we think that maybe some rebels stole it, had an accident and left it. Well we sorted the wheel problem two days ago. We're just trying to work out the controls because they're all in bloody 'combinion' or whatever language they speak. Hopefully if we get some work done today it'll be drivable by lunch time."

A TV was in the corner, the screen displaying an all too familiar, bearded man spouting propaganda to no end.

"Fuckin' Breen." said Josh "Tom, turn that shit off."

Tom walked over and flicked the off switch. The screen fizzed to a white line and cut off. Mark stayed fixated on the screen. As the others wondered around getting the full tour from the brothers, Mark could still see a faint picture on the screen. Maybe it was just an after-image. He was about to turn away when the screen cracked and a gaunt man in a suit appeared on the screen. He looked right into Mark's eyes shook his head and the screen turned black.

"What the Hell?" said mark. The others turned to see Mark standing in the centre of the room staring at the blank screen.

"Its called a 'TV' mate." said Josh. "You know? TV."

"I think he knows what it is." said Tom hitting Josh on the arm "Arse hole!"

"What's up Mark." said Fitz "You look a little pale."

"We have to leave." said Mark "Something isn't right."

"Hold on." said Dan "Let's all make a decision here."

A) We can lay low for a while and get some sleep.

B) We can stock up on ammo and carry on to the city with the APC.

C) We can stock up and look for Freeman down by the coast with the APC.

D) We can go underground using the manholes outside to move undercover.
