There's a difference between "hackers" and "virus creators".

People who make viruses and hack computers are dickless morons who have no life outside of a computer. Why do they do it? Because they can trash all your work, files and recreational stuff and not have to worry about getting thier heads kicked in.

In some cases, yes. Organized crime is getting more and more into virus making each year.

BTW, if your opinion is limited to "dickless morons who have no life outside of a computer" you should rightfully STFU and GTFO.

As other people have said a virus writer is not a hacker, nor a criminal in my opinion.

Take for example the recent .wmf exploit. I wrote an exploit for that, it was moderately harmful (although I had more than one version), but I didn't release it. It was just meant for me to learn more about how it works and it's always nice to know that you are part of the worlds tacticaly elite. :D

Nothing that people say about hackers will change my opinion on them, hackers don't have to be bad. Take Steve Gibson, his site's GRC.com. He considers himself a hacker but he has never done a single malicious thing.

As for malicious hackers, they do it for the fun, thrill and the knowledge that they have power. I think most people would be lying to say that they didn't want power, power over other people or a computer on the other side of the world.

i hate virus-makers, hackers, etc, as much as the next person, but some people just can't help it. every time new software / hardware is released, it will be everyones aim to hack it... and i do sort of agree to the previous post... these people are computer-bound fat people, who couldn't win a real fight if their life depended on it, so they rely on basically catching other people out, such as viruses... they are not expected by the receiver.

in a real fight, you both have equal knowledge. one may win because they are stronger or know how to block, etc, but in the end, they have both chosen to fight, and are prepared. viruses are unexpected, and out of order
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 15:28:17 UTC Post #161335
I disagree,
1) "I iz not fat"
2) Nothing is ever equal in a fight, that's why there is always a winner.
3) You've chosen to fight by going on an untrusted sight or by looking at porn, that's my view.

Hacking is good. That's the end of it. Look at the browser you are looking at this in right now. This wouldn't have been written if hacking did not exist. Most people start off by hacking and then go on to write code etc. Why do they start off with hacking? Same reason why everyone starts off with Linux and Open Source in general and then moves over to closed source. It's easier.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 15:56:21 UTC Post #161338
I completely agree with you BL, hacking isnt neccisarily bad, it usualy reveals flaws in computer networks so the owner can fix that. There are people that do it legaly for a living.

Though, those whom use it for crime should be sticked to the wing of a polikarov fight and be dropped from a TB-3.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 16:19:06 UTC Post #161342
Heh, my theory is that Norton, and Symantec, and McCaffe ((sp) I know), and the other Anti-Virus producers are the ones creating the viruses. Ihink about it, they come up with a solution reletively quickly to most new threats, at the cost of a $30 upgrade on your virus protection package =S. I think finding and exploiting flaws is fun, not to be malicious, but fun. Also creating something like a virus or a hack is thrilling, because you have the knowlege that you have outsmarted the programmer of a specific application, or defied which was previously thought of impossible. thats what I think.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 16:58:09 UTC Post #161348
Actually, a lot of those anti-virus workers probably used to be virus creators. Most people hack for the challenge and do not ever do any harm. The bad hackers gave hackers a bad image.

YES!

Its all about knowing. People who know don't talk, people who talk know nothing.

Everyone likes a challenge - usually in PCs its in the form of Maths and programming - its just plain Fun. Some people get it, others don't.

And another thing: Threats build integrity. Exploits expose bugs and add functionality. And hacks encourage development. Think about it - if there was nobody trying to break windows all the tiem, would microsoft want to update it at all?
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 17:28:41 UTC Post #161354
yeah, Microsoft would update. That company is full of Money-grubbing theives! Also, they would need to adjust for current technology changes, AKA Windows XP 64 bit edition, and Windows Vista with 64 processing supported. but I understand and support your stance entirely. What is hacking other than de-bugging?

Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 18:19:36 UTC Post #161359
Microsoft cannot adjust all the bugs. I tend to favour Microsoft in a lot of cases because they have their own code. Sure Mac is great but it's based on FreeBSd really which means they have a lot of extra workers who can all constantly update code, whereas Microsoft is just one closed company who have literally hundreds of thousands of lines of code that they have to go through. It's just simply not possible to go through that amount of code and keep it bugless.

Well, if it's not possible, why are there so many almost bugless and virusless OSs out there?

Microsoft doesn't give a fuck about the quality of their products anymore, simply because they don't have to. Windoze is simply spread so far that everybody is forced to use it, no matter how bugged it is.

And seriously, you're paying them, to get a piece of software that makes operating your PC easier. What you get does exactly the opposite.

I GOT IT!

Virus companies make these virues, but have these 'definitions' you have to DL every week to fight their own supply. Thats how they have the 'best' software to fight off these 'viriuses' becasue they know exactly where it is and how to get rid of it.

@hazardous:

As I said earlier, all the "bugless" OS's are either open-source or are based on something open-source. Plus, there are many bigs in other OS's but no-one goes for them since it's not worth writing a virus for a 2 person crowd when you can write one for windows, used by millions of people all over the world.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 19:30:42 UTC Post #161380
That's not quite right.

Linux for example simply doesn't have such an insecure rights-system like windows.
Also all recent M$ file types can execute stuff on your system. Where's the use for the user? There is none. It's just supposed to enable M$ to spy or modify your system. And it enables viruses to invade your system through normal media.

Here we are back at the topic. Most people make 'malware' to indicate security leaks + the people that create this stuff almost never release it. Script kiddies do.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-04 03:21:08 UTC Post #161396
There's constant competition between companies such as microsoft and virus-makers. Microsoft releases patches and updates to counter viruses, in turn, stronger, more penetrating viruses are released and so on. It will never change or be solved until the destruction of technology.

The reason why there's more viruses for MS than any other OS is because Windows is the most popular OS' around. As such, crackers* write software that will affect more users. Simple answer.
  • Crackers are people who write malicious software that affects mainstream users. Hackers are skilled programmers who work against corporate companies and never target a normal consumer - usually they do it for curiosity, money or pride.

Whats so fun about making viruses?
I am sorry I didn't read the whole thread, I just add my 2 cents :

just consider these possibilities:

to get some attention
I remember years ago there was cracked amiga games where the "cracker" just... added his l33t hax0rz name when the game started, nothing else, it's like those kids who had "by", "brought to you by", "powered by" etc at the start of mangas for example you downloaded: because they translated it, they think it belongs to it, they think they made it :| ...

to annoy
some people just have a sad and pointless life, and some of them are skilled enough to waste it to waste those of the others : some ones send you letters like "your mother told me your are *$@&ass" and to your mother "lol your son just told you're a #&itch!!", some others write hax, this is a part of human being :| ...

Challenge
Some people, while looking at a mountain, feel they have to reach its summit, to "beat" it, again, this is human being, some others, they look at a girl, they won't stop until they f#ck#d her, some others about video games (finish it, get the hiscore etc), some others it's about money, power, drugs, arts etc... and there are this part of the hackers: a new soft come out, let's beat it: I don't care my hax will bore people, I don't even think to release it, I will just send it to the "scene", as a proof, and of course some nolife around will talk about it :| ...

Competition
You're the boss of a company that just released an incredible, totally revolutionary, powerful, new software. Fine. You get lot of money, hire lot of people, you are on the newspaper, on internet, you got lot of friends etc. Fine, fine, until somebody release a competitor product...
Most people just keep working hard on their side to still make their products competitive, some others think about an other way to keep the leadership...

Keep the people need anti-virus software
You own a company that sell anti-virus software. Fine. What is, seriously, the best way to keep it working fine? How do you seriously think they got the fix before everybody???

If there weren't diseases, there wouldn't be doctors.
If there weren't thieves, there wouldn't be cops.
If there weren't soldiers, there wouldn't be soldiers.
If there were education, there wouldn't be any need of judges, politicians, prisons, lawyers, countries and all those guys who live in the middle of papers and grids and numbers and think for us and live thanks to us...

The elite part of our civilisation needs its worst part to keep their businesses working, it's a matter of balance, of survival, for them...

If you're brother has been studying for ten years he would be using FreeBSD by now. Okay, Windows is good, easy to use etc. but it's not stabler than Linux. The fact that Linux is Open-Source means it is more reliable since there is a wider reflection on the code. My general opinion is that if you say Linux is less stable it is because you're lazy or dumb and you can't configure it. Linux requires a lot of work to bring it up to Windows' ease of use but once you have put in the effort you reap many benefits.

Linux is not just written by anybody who feels like it. The code you submit is often reviewed by a) the whole of your group and b) a group leader. This way all code is made up to scratch and pretty much perfect.

@Orbb: I think Ant pretty much set out the good hackers vs. bad hackers in a clear way.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-05 13:17:05 UTC Post #161611
Guys, I can see what a lot of you are saying. But think about the cons, yea you have to have bad to have good, but some of the ways your trying to justify hackers it total rubbish.

Hacking some business website and defacing it, ok its not good and a crime and thus bad but at the same time the people who own the site can just reload the original (usually companies keep backups).

Hacking somones personal computer (Or the computer of an employee at a work station) and fucking it up is wrong. They can loose a lot of work, they can loose a lot of time and money, they can loose their job.

With people at home its usually just an annoyance, but it can be more serious. Hackers just dont think about what they could be doing by messing up somone system. For the hacker the other person is usually just a number, possibly a name. Anyone rmemeber that incodent in the papers where some technician got his computer hacked and somone threw a virus in. He was working for the hospital, three weeks later the guy has to say this to a family; "I'm sorry Mrs Smith but your son died because a virus on my computer corruped the life support equiptments programing and it didnt run properly."

Hackers just dont think of the damage they can do! SOMONE HAS DIED FROM HACKING FFS and its probably not the first or last person either. I hate hackers, crackers all forms of people who think its cool to play around with numbers to annoy somone. No hacker has a life IMO, you see them getting all jazzed up in films like Sword Fish and shit but its never that way. Some toss pot spends weeks and weeks locked in a room going through masses of numbers and letters until finally after weeks of working he releases his creation into the world, yet more 'space junk' to go around. How can any of you guys defend these morons? Fourth Gen I have nothing against you mate but if your a hacker then you just lost all respect in my eyes.

'Word out' to hackers: GET A LIFE.

I've tried to make a virus myself several times..

Once, I've actually succeeded in creating a virus that deletes all the files in the win32 folder. Although I was dumb enough to launch the virus on my own PC and delete the files. (at first, I've tried to make the virus delete every file in a 'test' folder. As soon as that worked, I made a 'real' version of the virus that clears out the win32 folder, saved it and kept on adding to the 'safe' version of the virus. So one day I ran the real virus by mistake and my whole win32 folder got screwed..)

I've never tried to release that virus or make another one.. One try was really enough. ;)

I tried to make something that could look like a virus once, you will not consider it as a virus and I will be agree. Believe me or not, the matter was to protect my work computer : the virus was supposed to :

_start when the desktop is displayed,
_take a snapshot (of it),
_display this snapshot,
_doesn't care about all mouse clics, all keybords entries etc, just endlessly keeps on displaying the desktop as it is supposed to be.

The point was to make the user (other than me) to think "wtf, something is wrong with that comp, I can't open anything, bah I will go on another one np..." :)

In computer security technology, a virus is a self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents. A computer virus behaves in a way similar to a biological virus, which spreads by inserting itself into living cells. Extending the analogy, the insertion of a virus into the program is termed as an infection, and the infected file (or executable code that is not part of a file) is called a host. Viruses are one of the several types of malicious software or malware. In a common parlance, the term virus is often extended to refer to worms, trojan horses and other sorts of malware; however, this can confuse computer users, since viruses in the narrow sense of the word are less common than they used to be, compared to other forms of malware. This confusion can have serious consequences, because it may lead to a focus on preventing one genre of malware over another, potentially leaving computers vulnerable to future damage. However, a basic rule is that computer viruses cannot directly damage hardware, but only software.
Settled.

I rate "black hackers" below terrorists. They should be tortured slowly for the rest of their lives after there genitals have been pulled off.

Think about it. They trespass upon and destroy your personal property. The lowest forms of life out their pretty much.

Viruses wouldn't be such a big deal if Windows didn't suck so bad and we all weren't so dependent upon it.

Viruses wouldn't be such a big deal if more people backed up their shit regularly.

Virurses wouldn't be so bad if there weren't so many stupid people propagating them by getting infected/passing them from stupid activities--Dowloading/Installing cracked version of MSVC++ and expecting it to be clean..cough..not that I've ever done that :P
