Then can someone explain to me why dying early is a bad thing for Christians?
One of the first things that happens to a person when they become a christian, is they want to tell everyone about it. It's a natural thing, but with chirstians, it becomes more. God wants us to spread the word, and let everyone we can know of his existance, through our actions and words. Dying early is the loss of the chance to tell one more person, in the hope he/she may come to a relationship with god.

I don't understand why you hate religion so much Seventh. It guides people, and makes a lot of persons decent creatures. Granted, some religions tell people to make war, and people do make mistakes, but I believe, especially in the case of christians, are very decent, and have rules that they apply to there life to help them serve and be kind to others.

And holding back society? You do relize that many great inventors and minds were christian right? Albert Einstein, thomas edison... Some of the same people that questioned the world and everything around them.
Do you relize that Darwin was also a christian? Yet he went against the church. I don't know his state with God, but religion did help him to question the popular beliefs of the day.

Organized religion threatened to burn Galileo at the stake unless he publically proclaim that the Sun revolves around the Earth instead of the other way around. He hated doing it, but he had to to save his life.

...and that's the only reason why Christians feel sad when their loved ones die early? Please don't kid me.

Christians are people too ya know :P Everyone feels the pain of not being with a loved one. I have a grandpa that died a couple years back. Sure it is hard sometimes, but I know I'll meet him again. I just miss him in the meantime.

With galileo, that was definity a perfersion of christianity. I firmly believe the bible says nothing about the earth being flat. I think it comes down to pride, the people of that time wanted to be the most important, that meant being in the center.

I can accept people who use god as a pillar to lean on, and his rules and whatnot to guide their lives, but anyone who actually believes that there is an all powerful being in the sky, is as intelligent as the same people who thought so 500 years ago. That's a big downgrade. Shouldn'e we be past making up pretend things? That's for children and retards.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-20 18:51:39 UTC Post #175696
That's the problem with religion. It's up to the people to interpret the Bible (and write the Bible in the first place). The pure religious concepts themselves are good, but after they've been interpreted by fallable human beings, the result is anything but pure or good.

Since God himself cannot intervene on a daily basis and direct human behavior (even thought he's supposedly omnipotent, he just chooses not to intervene), the humans just fuck around with religion and mess it up constantly.

Is there a solution? Not really. Humans are inherently fallable and stupid, as demonstrated by my "Dunce American" thread. So is religion ever going to be practice the way it's meant to be practiced? Never.

I agree with you satchmo, religion is never going to work as it is. That however, is why a personal relationship is important (at least to me).

Thats weird, when I go to TWHL in Opera it says "TWHL will be back shortly" but when I use IE I can go on....weird...

On this subject: You shouldnt call people narrow minded. narrow minded would be people accepting religion and only the views of others around them. Humans greatest achievements come from question.

Personally, I dont think my virus idea was too farretch'ed. Darwinism was considered weird and false.

religion (Espically Catholicism) has been tainted with the corrupt greed of humanity. The Crusades is all example I need. Popes calling Holy wars, granting absolution of sins for service in the war. Endless pointless laws made for teh benefit of the pope.

Did you know the Bible does not state Church is needed every week? Its not really needed at all to get into heaven (according to the bible)

I really do find it hard to believe that humans arnt more than what we are now. Sometimes I dont know what to believe. Thats life though, and I will contiue to pursue the truth until I die perhaps.....

For me, the greateset importance in life is to make myself happy and make others around me happy as well.

The meaning of life is simple. Happiness all around shall be our goal. How to achieve that is tricky and error-prone.

I love TWHL, because it makes me happy.

Actually I believe there is't a real meaning to life. We just evolved to survive in our environment and developed intelligence to help us do so as we become more advanced. We live and die, and continue to survive and think of ways to survive easier or more efficiantly. The whole purpose of our existance is to advance to a level of self-sufficiancy, meaning we can create what we need to survive without expending a resource. Once we achieve that, there is no point to continue to evolve and our "meaning" is over.

No offense VOX, but thats kind of a depressing lame belief. :( Makes me want to cry......

We all have meaning. The meaning of life is to live. Ones very existance is an advantage and meaning in of itself.

Posted 18 years ago2006-04-20 21:08:25 UTC Post #175711
Christians feel sad when someone dies because they are humans. This give me two points to make: they make mistakes, and they feel attachment to thier families like anyone else.
If truly God does NOT exist, then it would be necessary for humanity to invent one. Because there are many circumstances in our lives that are too painful to tolerate alone. We feel powerless frequently, and there are still many things that we have no control over.
But if God DOES exist, we would all have a subconsious awareness of his existence. Thus many people would need to find a billion reasons to justify the things they do that they KNOW are wrong because of thier conscience. If we can convince ourselves that he doesn't exist, then we can do whatever we want, because WE are the highest beings in the universe, then! WHEEEEE let's all have abortions!
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-20 22:13:29 UTC Post #175719
Christians still feel bad about someone dying even if they're in a better place because gasp someone they like died. If your wife left you for a guy she liked more and thus she's in a "better place," I think you'd feel pretty sad about it.

When a human developes cognative thinking and sentience then it cannot be killed. But, killing as it develops early is the same as throwing out sperm.

Killing it after 9 months is wrong.

Right. Our meaning is to live, to live and to improve our means of living. I'm just stating the truth above. But once we have achieved self-sufficiancy, our purpose will be entertainment/casual sex...I guess?

A lot of humans died in those wars just cause of religion
Get it in your head that religion is the excuse the leaders (who are usually not believers) have used to justify their wars and get followers to fight in their ranks. The reasons for wars are almost always economic, political etc. The basic principles of most religions are against murder, war, theft etc.
Satchmo said something similar in this thread.

Man, you guys are classic. You are finding all these weak reasons to hate EVERY religion. Then you go on to talk about how religious people are hateful and how it's so bad, wah.

Instead of answering to a guiding set of morals, you would rather make your own, so you don't have to take responsibility for your actions. so you don't have to feel guilty. There's all kinds of pleasurable and/or unethical things you can do when you're "agnostic" or Atheist. All you've got to do is make the people who follow the other set of values look bad. So you try to make fun of them or disregard what they say with weak reasons like "Oooo, I cry because so many people have died in religious wars." Religious wars? like the American Civil War? The American Revolutionary War? WWI? WWII? Vietnam? Korea? Gulf wars 1 and 2. the Crimean War? The Iraq thing? Where are all of your religious wars?

Why is that even an issue? people are killed in EVERY war. I'm going to be against ANY form of government because GOVERNMENTS have ben involved in ALL WARS! DOWN WITH GOVERNMENT! I WANNA DO WHATEVER I WANT SO WE NEED ANARCHY!

Umm Who is ben, just kidding.

On a more serious note Nickelplate build a bridge and get over it, we keep casting out and you keep grabbing the bait (sad really), I for myself am not religious, not atheist, I am me, I have good moral judgement/standards, im not perfect, and yes I can be judgemental on others, that?s human nature (although I try to be tolerant and not put my foot in my mouth)

We can only agree to disagree....and so life and this discussion goes on...

I think it's more than 6000.

I didn't say there WERE no religious wars, I just said that it's overstated.

You have to be religious to have RELIGIOUS moral standards.

Lefty: I can stop takin' the bait whenever i want. Right now it's all in fun. What can I say, you all are the master baiters. :D

plus, the word "judging" is thrown around too much. I am not judging anyone. Judging is telling someone they are going to hell. All I did was say i disagree with/don't want to "tolerate" some people's LIFESTYLES. not the people themselves.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-21 10:29:48 UTC Post #175826
If you can't tolerate said persons lifestyle, you aren't tolerating the person. They're pretty closely linked. How is it that people seem to link homosexuality to men? There're women too you know. Millions of them.

first off,
Nickelplate: What can I say, you all are the master baiters.
lol, Good one

and second, Nickelplate is saying that, so far people in this thread have been acting like there's only been religious wars, but really religion is just something that CAN cause problems, as can anything at all.

And btw, I'm an Atheist myself and I dislike religion, but I don't make it out to be the only thing wrong with the world. ^^

Umm Who is ben, just kidding.
Ben has been involved in every war since the beginning of mankind. He's this big guy with hairy testicles, but he's a homosexual, like the legendary Achilles.

I hate it when Hollywood had to "mainstream" a character's historical background so that they don't offend the Christian audience in movies (like "Troy"). Brad Pitt's character is suppose to be gay, yet they made him in love with his cousin, and gratuituously filmed him sleeping with two lovely and completely nude girls.

Twisting history so that it's more palatable to the majority? That's twisted.

They didn't change the story so Christians were not offended. They did it so Christians would go see the film and pay the ticket. Once again, an economic decision.
Edit: In most Hollywood movies, you can also find that all races are usually present in the group of main characters. This decision is made to sell more tickets. It seems kind of racist to me though. Don't black people (for example) feel represented by a white main character? I though we were supossed to be equal.

Organised religion = main tool of satan incarnate for brainwashing people

You don't need an idiot peadophile telling you what to do and what to believe in, you gotta understand and discover a faith of yourself. Otherwise you're either weak-minded or and idiot. Therefore, religion should be banned until a person makes 18 and is able to make decision on his own, and not thauhgt in schools.
