I think levitation is very well possible. Heres a point to ponder:
Ever try walking on thin ice in which you don?t want to break? What do you do? You walk lightly on it.. But think about it.. How can you walk lightly on an object without having anything to lift you and make you lighter. Or vice versa.. try stepping on a weigh scale. Now you will notice that it is possible to make yourself slightly heavier, by simple pressing down.. yet your not pushing yourself down like for example, if you where to hold the trim of the bathroom sink, and push it up towards you, then Newtons Law comes into effect, and your body push?s down.

Now everything David Blaine does, is by far CG. If he was to levitate, that would mean he?d have to be in a quite area, to concentrate on himself being lifted.. and mainly, what your concentrating on is flexing your muscles to move upwards, which causes a large amount of strain. So he would not be able to walk away. He would soon faint before that.

Thanks for reading.
I hope this increases your knowledge and perspective. So, yes it is possible to levitate. But your mind has to be very relaxed, almost to an alpha point/state of mind.

Well, hell, here.. I?ll tell you how to train yourself.
First, Alpha, what is it?
It?s the state of mind whereas your half asleep, and awake!
For example, first thing in the morning when you wake up, and your lying in bed.. then you would be considered to be in alpha.

Now, heres the excercise.
Every morning during alpha/ coming out of, Count from 100 to 0.. (Backwards from 100) You must be completely relaxed.

I was inspired to write this after downloading 6 episodes of Chriss Angel's "MindFreaks" Series.

I don't belive.

How do I walk "Lightly" on thing ice? No, I don't make myself lighter. I walk slowly to minimize the impact I have on the ice.
Try stepping on a weigh scale. Now you will notice that it is possible to make yourself slightly heavier, by simple pressing down.
I don't get what your trying to say here, I can lift my self a little bit into the air by bending my knees and straitening them again, and the scale will change because of my downward force. But I can't think of any thing else...
ike for example, if you where to hold the trim of the bathroom sink, and push it up towards you, then Newtons Law comes into effect, and your body push?s down.
yes, but what does that have to do with levitating? I can push down to lift my body into the air, but i'm still obeying the laws of physics.

I don't think its possible to levitate unless your using air pressure, it just doesn't make sence.

Walking lightly like that causes your body to disperse its weight evenly throughout itself. Normally when you walk the majority of your weight force is in your legs because they are being thrusted downward, thus giving an extra downward force in addition to your body's weight. Walking lightly removes most of this extra force because you aren't thrusting your body weight around as much.

I do not believe, sorry.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-12 23:33:57 UTC Post #179694
'neither ;)
'walking lightly' is a term used to say that you are spreading your weight around more and not putting the majority of your weight on your heels.
you cant change the readout on the scales by pushing down on nothing.
you are actually moving, i.e. maybe try to make yourself smaller by rolling up or something. this changes your centre of gravity, making the scales go crazy for a few seconds while it takes a new reading of your weight.

all this 'you can levitate' stuff isa ll superstitious mumbo jumbo.

ZOMG I don't believe!!1

The reason you don't break the ice is because you are "stepping lightly." You are not BEING lightly. You are simply not stomping your feet down like you just don't care. you're not diddy-boppin' around, you're not doing any levitating.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-13 01:53:24 UTC Post #179699
ice still has some level of plasticity as well as a threshold of rigidity and brittleness. Step on it lightly allows the ice to give a little for support. Stepping harshly on it too fast and stretch it to crack and break. This is dumb.

Levitation can be achieved by emitting a radio brain wave that reorganizes the surrounding air molecules beneath you to bond tightly enough to stand on. Pyscho kinetics if you will. There are other ways, such as magnetising your body's polarization frequency to counter balance the forces of gravity.

Walking lightly consists of distributing one's weight as evenly as possible and moving in a manner of low impulse F/δt.

Helicopters levitate!

Though the rotorwash would instantly break the ice, and doesnt do much for those walking on it.

you're just talking about force...

You dont 'walk lightly' on ice... You just dont step down as hard, or bring your feet up as high to minimize the force given to the ice when a foot lands.

And making yourself heavier? just force again, pushing down.

Meh, it's just a theory.

haha, HiLaRiOuS!
Ok, here's another one!

Bullet-time effect!

I think it is possible to be able to slow down time depending on the amount of concentration.
Example:
-Watching water to start boiling, does'nt it take forever?
-But ignore it, and it boils fast

Here try this.. go to a clock that has hands, now concentrate on the second hand.. The second hand will get slower. The harder you concentrate the slower it becomes.

Now, if we were able to get to such a level of concentration, I think it's possible to slow down time.

What do ya think?

Now, the main reason I started this thread is for the imaginative.
If you have theories of your own feel free to post them here.
and remember, it's just for fun.

But time is still slowed down.. If you could hold that concentration or state of mind, (near impossible) then your surroundings would appear to be going slower, just as the second hand.

Bullettime would be semi-possible if our eyes could handle higher frames and our reflexes would be able to react quiker.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-13 10:38:14 UTC Post #179757
our brains are relaxed when we have fun or are experiencing easy activity. but in certain situations, our brains speed up for critical moments simulating your speed up and slow of time. It's usually minor, but noticable nonetheless.

yes, Bullet-time would need reflexes, and that lunatic adrenaline high to go with it.

Frame rate would only have a small impact on it, since its a constant stream of data. But the brain photoshops the image we see, taking out crap thats in the way, like veins and blood vessels in the eye as well as blotchy holes from retinal burns. Speeding things up would give our brains less time to repair the image we see, thusly bullettime would give you crappy vision depending on how much of it we're getting. This is proven with "Tunnel Vision" some people get under adrenaline rushes.

This is weird.

The ice example is kinda bad unbreakable, it's as Gunter said, if you step to hard, you will break it as a moving object causes impact (Or, how ever you say it in English)

Also I agree with ant on your "slowing down time thingy"
You're simply tricking your mind.
As if you fall from a building time almost stops for you because your brain goes through a lot of thoughts.
Bullet-time ain't posseble anyway (in theory)
Because if time runs slower in the area your in, you won't notice.
Your clock seems to run the same as always, but a spectator outside the area looks at your clock and for him it seems to go slower.
What my point is, if time ever slows down or even STOPS, you won't notice.
In physics that is.

Now when it comes to psychollogy (I didn't spell that right did I? )
almost anything can happen.
You could slow down time, but that also slows down you and you will react slower than normal aswell, wich makes in unable to act while this "slowmotion" occours
since when do eyes see in frames?
We see in frames, that is true.
The eyes sends pictures to the brain which "draws them up"

No it isn't.
nNt exactly frames, but also our eyes have a refresh rate, its roughly 72 a second, if you could triple this value you could turn your head faster without losing focus. Thus being able to spot more when your moving.

Say what?? :D

Methinks maybe I can turn my head faster than my corneae can adjust to a different depth.. but due to "refresh rate??" Persistance of vision, perhaps.

Refresh rate? Uh, I don't think so.

Indeed, you look faster through the sides of your eyes because you have coned rods in there(I believe that is how its called). That is why you react better to objects coming from the side, here is an interesting article on this subject.

Er, cones and rods are different things. Rods sense black and white, and work well in darkness (hence everything looking grey in the dark) and, I think, are faster.

I dont know if your still on the same topic or not, but here is a response to the intitial post:

Changing your walking habits on ice does make a difference. You minimize the amount of mass being distributed down to the foot by walking a certain way. Look at it like this: A cone is slanted at a 45 degree angle. Its weight is not concentrated at the bottom, but in fact at the top. Now, at 90 degrees the weight is concentrated and distributed to the bottom. Relate that example to the feet and the body.

This principle does not work by simply concentrating in a "half-asleep" state. Even if the muscles were to move and constrict upward there is no inertial stress to lift the mass of the person upward. Mass cannot lose its own mass. Gravity effects mass. These obstacles cannot be overcome simply by "clearing your mind"

THis is a completely false belief, and I suggest not wasting time trying to attempt it.

Also, stop watching The Empire Strikes Back. :) Its a good movie, but sometimes yoda doesnt know all....

It is a rather neat idea though. I think it deserves at least one try. I myself am half asleep at least once a month walking around grabbing a cookie at 2 in the morning, then returning to bed with no knowledge. If im able to comprehend my actions I will try it. Would be really cool if it worked, but I would probably forget I did it.... :)

Here's my theory:

The only reason we exist is because we and at least one other person knows we exist. If you stopped being self-aware and others did not know you exist, you would cease to be altogether.

It's like that old thing that says "If a tree fals in a forest with nobody around to hear, does it make a sound?" The answer is no. because without something to RECIEVE the sound, it is just compressed waves of air.

Similarly we are just some type of energy, until others or ourselves receive this energy. Without something there to recieve it, we are just that energy. Man was only created because God was aware of us.
