Well, he is not telling us not to buy it, he's giving us the reasons why he wouldn't do it. After all, the opening post in this thread asked for some sort of debate on the matter.

Kasperg, haven't you seen his avatar? It is blatantly telling us we shouldn't buy it ;D

And every post of his in this thread has either been insulting Steam, which is actually a quite brilliant program despite it's few flaws, or poking fun at a expansion he hasn't actually played.

If you load the level where J. Mossman is on the screen, I'm sure you can noclip from that room and reach the place where that monster is.

I've played 1 or 2 hours into the game so far, and well, I love it. Except I get white dots all over models with HDR turned on, but that seems to be a 9800-related issue.

Just finished it now. The ending was annoying, not bad just annoying. It was amazing, but it was way too short. I really hope Valve doesn't start releasing games in small increments like this, I'd much rather have them release a full-blown Half Life 3.
Edit: 4 hours of gameplay is not a-ok, not for a first time through at least. The first time through HL2 it took me almost a week to finish(with lots of playing time per day), the first time through HL1 it took me maybe amonth but not very much playing time every day. if I can beat Episode 1 in 4 hours the first time through then it'd just too short. Bwah bwah bwah!
EDIT EDIT EDIT AGAIN BAH!:
SPOILER: THE GMAN IS FUTURE GORDON!

Im happy that its 4 solid hours of good innovative VERY FUN gameplay, and not 12 hours of droning monotanous repetition....
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 15:36:56 UTC Post #183752
hl2 was 12 hours of droning monotonous repetition? why the fuck did you but this??
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 16:11:54 UTC Post #183758
Xyros, if you want solid fun for 4 hours go download Minerva. Valve should have worked longer on this, end of story. Short mini-mods should be left to third parties.

I'm currently writing an email to Valve expressing my opinion, both good and bad, about Episode 1. I'm praying that I can change their minds on a few things because this thing is over a page and a half, single spaced in Word(arial 10 point), and if I don't even make a dent then I'll be pissed.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 16:20:03 UTC Post #183759
someone agrees with me.. im gonna have to go have a lie down
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 16:36:41 UTC Post #183768
I have played both Minerva and Episode1. Episode 1 should be a bit longer considering the price, but it is much more fun than Minerva. I would never replay the latter, while I've already played the citadel part of Ep1 three times. I think the character dialogues and scripted sequences make a huge difference.
Minerva is still extremely good for a free mod, but it didn't really add anything new to the HL experience for me.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 18:07:53 UTC Post #183782
minerva was a free mod made by one person, valve had their entire development team for 18 months and they only managed this, I dont see how you can even compare them

short term episodic content makes sense for independent developers like adam foster or other small teams, but for large established development teams like Valve it just feels lazy and rather milking of a certain cash cow

Good to hear however I believe its usless, they get so many emails they hardly read every single one (as far as I know)
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 18:13:52 UTC Post #183784
I know, thats why I'm praying that they actually get around to reading this one. Its better than sitting around doing nothing.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 18:32:02 UTC Post #183789
I can compare them because they are both HL2 singleplayer experiences. I do agree that they should've been able to do so much more in 18 months since I have done 24 maps in that time (please don't completely ignore HL2DM, Lost Coast, DoD, some CS maps and parts of Episode2).

You are making the assumption that the valve team is lazy because the game is short. Maybe the decission to give the game such a length is someone else's fault. We can't be certain. I hope Episode2 will be much longer, after the feedback they will get from the whole community.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 18:33:55 UTC Post #183791
Valve is full of money whores and made it short so you:

1. wasted your money on a 4 hour game
2. Make it so its SO GOOD that you just HAVE TO buy the next in the series.

The level of re-used content from hl2 and the various content that was cut from it, it does feel like it took less than 6 months to put together. The lost coast was also a 'cut' level. I don't believe all the 'free' content they've put out in the past 18 months would make more than a years dent in development time, unless they're working on something we dont know about. I can't think of many expansion packs in recent times that have been this short though!
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-04 19:36:38 UTC Post #183802
Its very good for a four hour game. New HDR lighting effects, very fun puzzles, new gameplay types, enemies, etc....

Worth it for 20 bucks.

it's not HL3, yet it continues from HL2s end!?
Valve did create it right...

Opposing Force and Blue-Shift weren't HL2.
When you create worlds and themes of such artistic and gameplay potential (Black Mesa, City 17), you tend to bring the best out of it (and $ too). As mappers, we also reuse themes when they work and we like them.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-05 01:48:30 UTC Post #183822
Puzzles vere very interesting and fun indeed. But it took much longer than 4 hours for me (havent finished it yet but already i've played it like for 7 hours) because of my crappy machine and some places where i managed to get stuck.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-05 02:48:02 UTC Post #183825
this is indeed the best singleplayer game valve have made so far.
anyone who says it's crap needs brain surgery quickly.
i would pay $100 for this.
