What program did the original programmers of Half-Life use to create their games?

And where can i download it/buy it (that is if its not a restricted program like the many at my workplace)

PS Nightshift sucks (and it always will)

PPS - what in god's name are these: :cyclops: and :thefinger: ?

Microsoft Visual Studio 6 for programming..
Worldcraft 2.0/3.0 for level design..
Some old ver. of photoshop for 2D graphics (3/4 or older)
3ds max for modelling.

I don't think they used Worldcraft, that was developed by autolycus (yes?) after the release of Half-Life. I think they used some old quake editor.

HL1 used some old quake editor, yes, while HL2 uses the Hammer 4.0 build.

Twas worldcraft 2.0.
That editor was included with the early Half-Life retail packages.

I think he means what engine...

Hl1 used the Quake 1 engine. Valve purchased it, then heavily modified it to get where it is now.

No, Valve used Worldcraft 2.0 to design the original singleplayer maps. Autolycus didn't even worked for Valve at that time, that happend later.

I seem to have stumbled upon a Conversational niche here :P

They used VC++ 5 or maybe 6 for programming, 3DS for modelling, Worldcraft 2 for mapping (the Quake 2 editor), not sure what they used for textures. I believe they used the Quake 2 engine, with some stuff from Quake 1, and alot of their own modifications.
m0p m0pIllogical.

Worldcraft, created by Ben Morris as a Quake level-editor, was used. Ben joined Valve and continued to work on Worldcraft, though he doesn't seem to be involved with Hammer. Interesting enough, Marc Laidlaw joined Valve at the same time...

And they used thhe Q1 engine!!!
As DK said, a modified Q1 engine, some Q2 engine code involved as well. Haven't you done your homework? :P

// Heh, sounds like a discussion about stuff even the game dev team finds unimportant... like happens with so many popular games... :)

Why would they tell you they used wc 2.0 if they didn't? It says in the manual : "We used Worldcraft 2.0 to build all of Half-Life's levels."

Does it matter what engine they used if they rewrote most of the code?
I think 70% or so of the code was made from scratch.

Probably, but its like Source from Q1 to HL1 engine instead I suppose. Source is pretty much a HL1 hackjob with a bunch of additional code, from what I hear anyway. In any case, it makes it really expandable.
