Im not leaving anything. I'm just bored with HLDM after a round or so.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-21 09:23:05 UTC Post #186217
Yeah, but HLDM is boring after a round. Install the better mods like Half-Life Rally, or The Trenches(<--needs Costum maps installed)
LOL

the trenches is by far the most boring HL mod ever made

same 6 or 7 maps, same two guns, same bullshit, endlessly.
Posted 18 years ago2006-06-21 09:24:14 UTC Post #186219
Yeah, HLDM is quite lame. At least I think so.

Hence the need for costum maps Hydeph. its fun for a round of 2 but then it gets boring.

Okay, the code for TWHL3 is about a third done now, and I'm very nearly ready to start working on it properly again (last exam's tomorrow).

The reading stuff for tutorials is done, just gotta work on the writing. Similar story with projects.

Now I am confused! Some tell me it's costum and not custom... and vise versa. :nervous:

It's custom, Elon.

Jimmi ---> jimmi

In your profile there should be a slot where you can list your Steam account name (now that the friends list is functioning) Similar to the current TWHL's AIM, or MSN name.
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-18 12:45:36 UTC Post #190651
Heres an idea I thought of in IRC.

We should have a backup directory.

Maybe such files as:
hl.dll
client.dll
hl.exe
other dlls.
sentences.txt..
..etc.

It was mentioned that you might not want to host them due to copyrights. Well, what do you think

Why would we do this, when we have Steam and its hundreds of servers?

for those who don't have steam. :)

Will we be able to adjust the size of, or how much of our journal is showing at our profile page? I'd be happy if I could adjust it to about 2/3 less of what it is, so when somebody clickies your profile, they can see the whole thing without scrolling.

Also maybe too, journal "thumbnails", that would list a preview of each journal entry--I think the Mozilla Forums has something like this, but for their threads.

<Sorry if these have already been mentioned/addressed>
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-05 19:41:30 UTC Post #192613
Unbreakable, that's what friends are for :P

rowley, explain how that's different to the current journal page-thingy, where you can see everyone's journals, apart from TWHL's being the full journals as opposed to previews. I'm not sure I quite get your idea. If it's what I think it is then it'd be a waste of time since it's not much of an improvement.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-05 19:46:00 UTC Post #192614
I think what he ment that on the front page when pressing a guys name in the recent journal enteries a little window expands and you can see a larger portion of the journal post.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-05 23:08:20 UTC Post #192631
Fourthgen:

2 things. Click on your name to bring up your profile--I'm taking abouthow the journal entries are formatted there.

1. I think long entries should be "thumbnailed", that is, only the first few sentences will be listed, and then ... to make room for subsequent entires.

Mozilla forums does this as a preview for their thread lists, so when your looking at threads, you don't just see the thread title, but you get to read a few lines of the first post--something like that.

2. It would be nice if the you could format how much of your journal you want showing when someone goes to your user profile. For mine, I'd like them to see the whole page, withougt having to scroll down to much, so I'd like to be able to choose how many journal entries are showing before you click to see the "old entries".

Does that make sense, or is it more confusing :P?
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-06 10:23:51 UTC Post #192666
Makes much more sense :] Yeah, I pretty much agree with your suggestions. Sounds like a good idea and unlike some other ideas in this thread, it's improving the place ;)

Add to the forum rules,

No topics can be created over defacing and questioning religion. Let people believe what they wish with peace.

Because EVERY single thread about religion ends up making people flame each other, and draws out those who have "Complete And Total Knowledge of the Bible" to show up and prove everyones queries to religion wrong. Believe what you will, but don't make everyone hate each other for such a simple thing as http://img312.imageshack.us/img312/5947/1154056909683bs5.jpg

Unbreakable: Hosting those files would kinda put us into legal constraints. While the likelihood of Valve actually finding them and taking legal action is low, I doubt that it'd be wise to have 'em up in the first place, considering we don't own the server.

Religious threads are harmless. If you're dumb enough to post in them, then so be it. I'm not keen on enforcing even more constraints on what you're allowed to post. If you don't like them, don't read them, simple as that.

Still todo:

General
  • Customisable front page (selection of sections to show, etc., and perhaps count adjustment for different resolutions)
  • Statistics page
  • "Allow remember across PCs" check for "invalid cookie".
Resources
  • Inline tutorial revisions by authors and moderators, perhaps with submission of drafts as well as suggestions
  • Members tips, moderated before posting, can be appended to tutorials
  • Multiple page tutorials
  • User-submitted tools!

  • Javascript bbcode helper
  • URL checking for maps in the MV (checking that the headers for the path return 200)
  • Good search stuff for maps, fora, others
  • Full navigation ranges for MV, etc.
  • Mass PM handling
  • Proper quoting
  • Specific bbcode ([map]id[/map], etc.)
  • Timezone converter by member
  • Ranks or similar
  • Spam protection
  • Some colour code control
  • Better MV icons
  • PNG transparency avatars
  • Read receipts for PMs
  • Birthdays
  • Proper special threads for competitions (custom thread icons denotable by moderators)
  • PM block list
  • Server query stuff
  • TXT thread-save dilly
  • Thread subscription
Administration
  • Detailed access control for moderation, allowing, for example, banning a particular user from shouting, commenting on maps, etc.; perhaps using groups too
  • Togglable e-mail registration thing for tough times
  • PM to users when their threads are moved, etc.

Probably thread notifications through RSS feeds.
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-16 18:52:55 UTC Post #199878
Nah, just a page that lists all the topics you're subscribed to. Kinda like an RSS feed viewer, but, you know, without the RSS. I'm pretty sure it's in various forums.

Then again, maybe I'll have an RSS feed. Undecided.

Anyway, I'm pretty realistically expecting to make decent progress now. Intend to knock one thing off the list per day, on average.

Like threads for members and threads for visitors, and based on rank or by mod team? 'tis interesting, i like it but there could be unforseen problems.

hmmm, a twhl "team" option would be cool... As in, if you decide to make a little modding team, it would outline what the mod is, who is in it, and who does what. It could also have have little bulletin things set by the creator that only members of it can see. To prevent spam over it, there should be a form type thing that tells what it is, and if a moderator decides it worthy, it makes it onto the team list. It could also be used to organize little mini competitions as well.. Basically, this would be like a clan system that can be used for little constructive purposes. It would help these kind of things out because:

1. You dont have to look through an insaaanely long thread to understand whats going on.
2. It would help these teams stick together a bit.
3. It would be unique from other mapping sites.

I understand thats what moddb is for, but this would feel alot more "at home" than that. If it gets far enough, then I guess it could move on to moddb, but untill then, this wouldn't bring on such a world of criticism.

There's an 'e' in there. Dont let the name of my comic fool you.

Erm, perhaps a preview post or preview PM option, so you can make sure all your BBcode is working before you send something?

You should add an "Installation Instructions" part for when you submit a map.. That helps the author to make sure that people do it right and you don't get comments such as "it no work i put on desktop" (exaggeration :P) and also makes it easier for people wanting to download it :)

- Inline tutorial revisions by authors and moderators
...does this mean that an author can change their tutorials on-the-fly?
for example, if I wanted to add more links to my third displacement tut, i can do it without going through a moderator?
if not, explain please :P

also, is there a 'quote' button now? to press to insert another person's post in quote brackets into your post?
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-17 06:55:26 UTC Post #199896
Yes, it does. Either that, or you'll submit the changes, and then all the mod has to do is glance at it and click "alright, yeah" rather than having to get the tutorial file, hunt through it, correct it, re-upload it and change the modification date in the database.

That would be the Projects section which I've mentioned and is half-written ;).

Oh, and quote button: good idea.
