Some of you may know that I'm quite the physics fan when it comes to gaming. I've read a few articles recently about the work lucas arts are doing with the Euphoria engine. Then I found this video.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2731194268578183897

It demonstrates the perfectly smooth actions performed by several objects with different physical properties. So if you are like me and like your games with mind-blowing physical special effects watch this video. Then start getting very excited about next summer. :)

Drools

That looks amazing. Pity it will rape proccessors.

Thats why you buy a physics card.
Impressive stuff, although Im not that interested in Physics/Graphics of a game, but more the gameplay/fun factor.

the gameplay/fun factor.
Do you not think being able to trip people with rocks and shite will add to that?

Source has absolutely nothing, compared to this..

Urbanebula hit the nail on the head.

Bombarding indiana jones with huge rocks on a rope bridge until he falls off and comes crashing down through a serise of glass sheets into a giant tub of jelly has got to be pretty fun.

Urb thinks about hitting a nail on the head in the Euphoria engine. drool

Of course i could imagine much cooler uses for it.

I like physics. I long for the day we have fully destructible environments (like in CoH) in first person shooters.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-05 18:44:22 UTC Post #205163
We will never see a coherent video-game world, no matter how good the physics are.
For example. Remember the poles that generated Combine force-fields in HL2? I bet they would actually break if a grenade exploded near them. But if that happened, parts of the game would make no sense. You can't make a realistic destructible FPS world without first downgrading the player's fire power IMO.

AUXSUM! This is going to be an amazing breakthrough once the game is actually released to the public(assuming it doesn't hog the amount of reosurces that we think it does).

The game Duke Nukem had areas you weren't supposed to see. The authors actually put signs back there telling you to get out.
"YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE LEVEL LORD!"

Ah the good ol' days.

Another vid for you to drool over. (or not)

looks good.

also, destructible environments could add an extra level of gameplay, as it did in red faction.
for example, the player could bust open a door with explosives and watch it shatter into splinters :)

...and wonder why the explosion has almost no effect in the surrounding bricks and floor, as is usually the case :D

Bleh, parallax decals are good enough for me when it comes to a deconstructable world(in terms of normal walls, floors, and ceilings).

Sure, this adds something in the realism of games, but for a game to be realistic we have to take away something else. And I just don't know if it's worth it...

Not exactly toss, it doesn't have to take away something else. So is the "performance improvements of DirectX 10" and advancing technology..

It will be like it is now, with better physics. (and all of us having to get new computers =( )

Imagine the HL3 engine with the posibilities that PhyX and Euphoria are presenting us with.

Combine are shooting at the player from a crude wooden bridge placed between two apartment roofs overhead. The player sees a water tank on one of the roofs and lauches a nade at the supports. The tank crashes down and water sprays all over the fuckin place throwing a few of the soldiers off the bridge to their doom. The tank crashes into the bridge, which splinters into thousands of pieces. One remaining soldier dives towards the nearest building as the bridge comes down and hangs helplessly from a window ledge. The player aims and launches another nade...

Sweet!

Ehh, it won't be used well. It won't be scripted in the coding, per se, but it will only be used when they want it too, like when in HL there where only parlor tricks when there physics system was showed off.

*Edit-
I was playing this game (http://addictinggames.com/matrixrampage.html) and I actually started to get excited about this engine, mainly because of the fact that you could jump around and the floors would break and windows and walls would break. Imagine how fun that would be to have a whole level where if the game went of for a little while there would be nothing left of the level.
