I got an idea after playing through GEARS OF WAR

A deathmatch map inside a volcano.

It will (like all my other maps) feature the halflife2.wad that Rimrook ported.
Layout is simple. 3 Main chambers with 3 different height levels.

It will be somewhat of a large map, but when i detail out all the paths, it will be more straight foward, hopefully open enough to function.

I already have one room basically done.

Hopefully i can keep the polies down so people can actually handle playing it on older machines.

That's pretty well made but the lighting is off in my opinion. It needs a red tone mixed with orange. The sky should be changed as well.

Any idea where i can get custom skys?
Im thinking like an overcast, or really dark looking cloud.

I was also thinking of making the lava emit light (texture lighting)
Ill compile and see how it looks.

I'll tone down the light spot and use it for ambience

EDIT::

Better Lighting:

Hey! I was making a map almost just like this not too long ago. It was a bit more depressing (really dark lighting), and there wasn't as much texture variation, but it was basically the same theme.

If you're looking for custom skyboxes, you should check out The Wadfather. They've got quite a collection of them.

I like the last one's lighting the best.

It's a really neat theme and it looks like you're doing pretty good so far... keep it up :)

How come all i get when I post my.php links is "Don't link to my.php" but Tetsu0 gets away with it!?

Anyway, that area looks great and the lighting is much better in the last pic IMO.

What I would suggest is working on the hole at the top. It's kinda blocky and the rock seems to just cut off immeadiately.

Good idea, it reminds me of that Unreal 2004 map -

I think the lighting is great in the second post, and that pillar looks very good imo.

I assume you're still going to work on the hole at the top ?
EDIT:
Like Urban said ^^

sry urb

second room is coming along well, i'll post some pics tomorrow

Looks pretty neat. :)

You may want to use the lava texture from the DMC wad file(s), and make sure its a light emitting texture. :)

When you upload the picture, it gives you several URL's that you can copy and use. Copy the one that lets you link straight to the picture.

Brushwork is good, but the lighting still needs work. Change the skybox texture: most (active) volcanos are shrouded in dark smoke and shizzle.

When I was making my volcano map, I used some layered additive and invisible "{" fog textures and put them over my hole, kind of like they did in HL2:Ep1. This would pretty much cover up the whole skybox, so you could just make 6 flat, sort of grainy images with your desired color and it should work fine. You might also want to cover the map with more natural looking fog by putting a bunch of smoke sprites all over the place.

Also, try using a better lava texture, like the one that came with DMC. The one you have now isn't really lava, and it's a bit too orange.

Looks alright.

I really agree with srry on the lava texture.
The lava texture from DMC.wad is the best one you'll find for HL1.

Also, the lightning makes no sense.
Like Ant said, you need dark smoke.

Why is their a hole in that screenshot anyway?
That yet again, makes no sense.

Doesn't the lava pushes itself together in 1 big massa trough craters?

looks nice but that entrance is too square for a cavern.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-05 09:37:03 UTC Post #208667
Looking good, though remember that HL doesnt like cave like structures, i once created a map consisting of a cave like system, wich only had six sides(like a cylinder) and still pushed the R_speeds very high.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-05 20:59:09 UTC Post #208723
The entrances aren't done yet, i just did that room, and no hallways yet.
Hallways are coming after i have all 3 rooms finished.

Where can i get the wad from DMC?

And where can i get a better sky texture. As i know i need one, i cant seem to find one anywhere.

I didn't work on the map today at all, im gonna start right now (I had band practice then went bowling)

And then im goin out later, then i need to pack because im flying back to florida tomorrow so an update might not come until late tomorrow if at all.

At this point i want to get a playable map and THEN i'll worry about r_speeds

Hmm.. any suggestions on the hole in the roof besides getting rid of it?

Here's a couple I found googling "half-life sky" (I'm using an Arctic one from Crinity in my upcoming Hoth-themed map):

http://www.fuchtelworld.de/work/Half-Life%20Env-Skys/
http://crinity.planethalflife.gamespy.com/skymain.htm

You could also try creating some using 3Ds Max, Terragen, or a bunch of other programs. I personally have tried and failed many times at using Terragen, but maybe you'll have more luck! I've heard you can use Source somehow to create custom skies for HL too, but I dunno.

And finally, if Rimrook isn't to busy, he might do it for you :)

Looking forward to more updates!!

Okay. I lied.
Im working on the hallways as we speak.

But I just got finished downloading deathmatch classic. So i'll extract the wad from the pack and stick it im my custom wad i have going.
A question about custom skies :: Are they included in the .bsp?

Damn.
Okay. i'm just going to get rid of the sky. it'll cut down on some plans but it'll also save polies in the long run. Thanks for the heads up.

UHH WADFATHER takes so long to Navigate.. and those drop down menu's dont work for me, im browsing wads 8 at a time.
Google is still a good friend of mine. Got one.

Wpolys at 560 in that room.
Not bad

OH NOES!

Not a double post!!

But it's an update so who cares.

Max Wpolies is 1100... relativley high, but with some fiddling i can take that down (hopefully) to under 1000.

Hmmm... Did you scale any of your textures up to 2 or above? That would drastically cut down on the w_polys, and it's much needed for any map that's mostly comprised of terrain. Your lava should also be scaled a LOT higher than it is right now, so as to reduce visible tiling as much as possible.

By the way, Wadfather isn't really that hard to navigate, you just can't get to the different catagories by the usual route anymore (seems to be broken for some reason). Instead, click on a certain texture set, and there's a link in there that'll say "Check out other great texture collections with the same theme: *name of the theme*".
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-06 23:47:48 UTC Post #208846
oooh.

yea my lava texture wont scale for some reason. i have it scaled to 2X2 and its a 256 X 256 texture so i dont know what's goin on there.
I'm tiling the walls and cieling to 2x also.

i'll beworking on chamber three tomorrow

Wadfather with 25 rows.
The drop down menus haven't worked in forever, so I copied that into a text document and saved it for reference.

The lava texture doesn't match the light that its emitting. Looks unnatural.
