Yeah, i know its been around for a while cough already, but today being its official launch date, I just thought it warranted a topic.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/default.mspx

Apparently the "Wow" starts now, or so MS say!

What do you think? Getting ASAP? Don't wanna here about it, or are you gonna wait a bit for better driver releases.... ANYTHING?!?!?!
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-30 13:19:41 UTC Post #211134
Vista, pfft. I see no reason to get it at all, except DX10 - and I don't have a DX10 Graphics-card. I'll warez it when someone cracks all the DRM and releases a simple install.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-30 13:29:55 UTC Post #211136
I don't want Vista. To me it seems just like XP, but more of a memory hog. It just doesn't have anything i need.

Shiny stuff and 3d-windows flipping about, that I can live without.

@ ZombieLoffe: there are already good releases out :glad:

@ Saribous: Vista uses hardware far more than software to run visual aspects, so it therefore should run faster and be more reliable. ie, a badly written driver will be less likely to take down the entire system.

DX10 should be good, but I don't have a 8800 either :(

...it sounds like im a right ole fanboy but im not! :)

Heh and here I thought you meant the new WoW expansion...
Honestly I don't know too much about PC's but what I do know is that XP is good enough for me. DX10 does sound sweet though.

Im not going to buy it - simply because for the price I could buy something much more worthwhile. Like a new graphics card. :

^ Ubuntu sucks teh cock, Slackware ftw -_-

Vista is a joke, anybody who pays money for it deserves to be drowned. The only reason anybody should CONSIDER getting it is for DX10, which somebody will probably crack and port to Win2K/WinXP anyway, totally defeating the purpose of Vista.

Could someone perhaps stop with the biased crap and just list some pros and cons of it?

Why buy Vista when you can just reach down your toilet and grab a handful for free?

It wont let you run homeburned CD's or DVD's.
It tells Microsoft what you do and what files you run.
It makes your computer slow. All the visual FX will rape your computer.
You can probably get DX10 from somewhere else, I bet it would run better too.

And the price... Damn.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-30 17:29:54 UTC Post #211169
It's not really that expensive. Home premium is only $119.99 on Newegg, which is hardly more than what I payed for my copy of XP Home Edition.

Still though, I'm not getting Vista any time soon. Its new UI is just ugly, it's all bloated, and it doesn't have any features that I care about. That's right, I DON'T NEED SEE-THROUGH FOLDER WINDOWS!!11! So I'll just wait until they release the inevitable second service pack. By that time, maybe I'll even have a DX10 compatible card.

thats an OEM version, srry. if you upgrade any piece of hardware you need to get a new cd key.

The funniest thing about Vista is that it'll fuck up WIP screen shots. The print screen button will be removed in Vista. They're afraid people will pirate HD movies frame by frame.

@penguinboy - any piece of hardware? Fuck this DRM crap. I buy normal CDs from independent record labels (not Sony BMG) because one day I might not have an iPod...

Faster, safer and stable my ass. Notice that Office doesn't do anything radically new since the versions on windows 95, yet it uses 100x the resources. :/ I"ll wait at least a year or until the first service pack, which ever is later.

The best thing about Vista is that outlook 2007 will render e-mails with the word processing engine. Good job jumping back 10 years in technology, microsoft.

I don't want to hear about Vista. Unfortunately, software will end up being Vista-exclusive
XP works fine for me. The only "blue screens of death" I've ever seen in XP were hardware related, not software.
I haven't read through all the new features, but I bet most of the useful ones could easily be included in a XP update.

ZOMGZ WINDOWS XPEE IS UZELESS!111! NUTHIN BUT SHINY SHIT RANT RANT RANT FLAME FLAME FLAME
It was the same last time round, at XP's launch. People need to make up their minds. It seems as if most people are ranting and flaming just for the hell of it, whenever a bug shows up, everyone's willing to jump the gun and blame Microsoft for old software but when they do come out with new software, all of a sudden everyone is fine with the old stuff.

Windows Vista is better than XP, whether you like it or not. It's not a step back in time by any means and as such it's the new standard. No-one is saying upgrade now, but you'd be dumb to select a new computer and opt for older software, namely XP.

And seriously, could some of you please get your facts right before flaming. Flaming is perfectly fine if it's justified but stating that OEM Vista invalidates as soon as you replace any hardware is total and utter bullshit. The only hardware change that invalidates Vista OEM copies is a motherboard change, and that's fair enough considering the much lower price you pay for OEM.

sigh I'm not an MS fanboy :D I just get aggravated when people don't get their facts right and follow the majority opinion to look cool. It's the internets, get over it.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-30 20:51:12 UTC Post #211192
All Vista is, is a new OS with everything from XP (and a tiny bit of new stuff) but animated. It also takes 10gig just to install Vista. I'm not getting it. :D
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-30 21:00:04 UTC Post #211194
uhh, XP OEM is the same.
No, no it's not, and it doesn't appear that you were even right in the first place. I've reinstalled my OEM copy of XP three times now (once after a motherboard change), and it's still working! GASP!
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-30 21:12:01 UTC Post #211196
i heard you could activate an OEM version 3 times before it becomes invalid, but i have no experience with that because i have never used it. and i have read on some tech forums that vista recognizes any hardware change. advanced security and such. but of course it came out yesterday, so nobody really knows that much about it yet.

but theres really no need to blow your top over it.

eventually everyone will have to upgrade to vista, but i will give it at least six months for them to fix major bugs before i think about using it permanently. i mean, you could wait a year or two, but i want to play crysis when it comes out :)

but yeah if future tests show that vista OEM can be reactivated, and is only affected by motherboard changes, then its only AU$30 more than an XP OEM...

I can only pray for that day to come.

For a start: five fucking different versions? That's just utterly ridiculous. Two, Vista is, iirc, still built on WindowsNT technology, which just wasn't developed for this shitty graphical crap. Third, the theme looks terrible and uninviting. Fourth, they ripped off a crapload of stuff from OSX. Fifth, Internet Explorer 7, which, after how many freakin' years of developement, still can't render stuff properly. Sixth, DRM for the lose. Seventh, it's incredibly expensive. Need I go on?

When I'm absolutely and totally FORCED to upgrade to Vista, I'll get a cracked version. Not paying for that level of crap.

XP works perfectly for me. I won't ever upgrade, but I'm sure the next time I get a new computer--fairly soon--, It will come preinstalled :

I was fairly excited when XP launched, because it didn't really contain any of the controversial points that Vista does. As well as that, it wasn't a huge departure from ME (and let's face it, ME sucked balls). It was far friendlier looking, and it removed the need for driver discs (for the most part).

Nah Jobabob, DRM is great! It protects from all those nasty BitTorrent critters that invade your PC using programs called trojans which hackers use to gain access to your personal files. Also, DRM helps prevents viruses and eliminates the need for a firewall.
