Which version of Vista are you using? From what I've seen, Direct3D performance in Vista is a little faster than in WinXP, at least for systems with a large chunk of excess RAM.
m0p m0pIllogical.

I have the business edition.
But i have no clue what i'm doing. It's so... new.

I love it, but all i want to do is continue to work on my map for the competetion

When i transferred my WON version of HL to vista (drag and drop form Windows.old) it's prompting me for a cd key.. which i dont have with me in florida.

none of my steam games are "Availible at this time"

3333333333333 will work as a cdkey for WON Half-Life.
really its your fault for downgrading to vista.
i dont think steam works properly with vista either.

Vista's gonna have a lot of teething problems as hardware manufacturers attempt to get their collevtive heads around Microsoft's new policies concerning security. As such, its expected that there's gonna be a lot of driver issues for a while.

Windows ME was a terrible operating system, a mere waste of development time. XP was a far better (and larger) step.

And here's why I'll never get Vista.

Lol im not borrowing, it was given. Its permanant.
There was no upgrade option, and vista completley erases XP.
I'll just have to debug it myself.
Right now im re-installing steam and all the games.
Hammer seems to work fine, only the lag and won half life doesnt run, (ill try the 3333333333 cd key whatever)

at least firefox still works

And penguin boy,

just shut the hell up. If ur not gonna help, just leave

You should wait under Vista is stable and has the apps/ games you need.

Well i definitely think it's too late now. Seeing as how the vista install purged XP from my system. I'll just fiddle with it and let you guys know how and if i solved anything. For future reference.

Orpheus: Granted, but my main beef with Vista comes from the incredibly evil, underhand tactics that Microsoft have employed to 'protect' their 'consumers'.

And by 'protect', I mean 'assrape'.

And by 'consumers', I mean 'minions'.

XP couldn't run DOS games (and neither could ME) because they switched the core. 95 and 98 ran on DOS. ME and future OS' from that point were built on the core of Windows NT. Hell, Vista is still built on NT.

just so you know, because you have installed vista over XP, the XP key will be void and you can never use it again.

Go to Start > Run > msconfig, and check to see that there aren't any programs running that aren't necessary under the Startup and Services tabs.

Also, go to Control Pannel > Sytem > Advanced > Performance, and lower some of the visual effects that only slow the computer down.

That's all I can think of to help you. :

i'm gonna get vista eventually, but not until it's stable, and there have been a couple of service packs.

So, according to your reasoning, Orpheus, it's fine to complain about Steam because it's small-time, but complaining about an OS is pointless because it's too large scale?

Alas, I'm probably guilty of the same thinking, just in reverse: I'll make a stink over large things and ignore the little things.

Yikes, sounds like a heap of shit at the moment. I know I'll be getting Vista because it's not like I have much choice since the next PC I get will most likely come with it already...I'm fine with it as long as the bugs are sorted and the main function works fine aka gaming with no lag and designing levels.

Actually, alternatives for me are somewhat non-existant, given the price and relative shittiness of broadband Internet in Australia.

Besides, I never compared Steam to Windows, I was merely remarking on your comment comparing the little things to the large things. I simply used Steam as an example, because I recall a certain thread on TWHL in which you expressed a certain distaste for Valve's software.

Insinuating that I'm sort of child or 'baby' as you so put it, makes me giggle. Again, using your logic of something that affects more people than most, are you saying that the rampant poverty that exists in many third world countries should go completely unchecked while we worry about the little things here in the Western world?

A far-strung example maybe.

Anyhoo. Should we, as consumers, be forced to accept the large things because they're large? Some would say we should 'choose our battles' and perhaps they're right in some respect. However, not questioning the integrity of a company that, as you put it, "affects 99%" of the world, is something that seems just a tad bit strange to me.

Perhaps it's just me.

Ok i fixed my "not being able to run steam" problem, but i figured out i dont have OpenGL or D3D support.... Or... i cant/dont know how to use it yet.

So i guess copying the files from Windows.old to the regular program files turned out to be a bad idea.

I copied them back, re-wrote the pathnames and everything works peachy.
I can build, compile, run. Everything. My 3-D view still lags but that shouldnt hinder my map any. I can run HL1, but only in software mode.

I guess i can't tap into the VISTA drivers from windows.old, but i'm looking into it.

I guess windows.old acts like windows XP; the folders are almost completley independant, and all the paths match up.

So if anyone had windows xp and installed vista, keep the files in windows.old because you can still browse to them and run programs..

Olol vista. I am so never getting that ^____^.

Sucks for you Tetsu0. If I were you, I'd just run XP. I'd much rather go through the hassle of Linux than ever "up"grading to vista. Linux distros are updated like twice weekly, too, so Vista can't really compete with newliness.
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-14 14:14:10 UTC Post #212469
wow... just wow... vista...

If you ask me, MS could spend a whole another year of work on it before they should release it for the public. But money is poor motivation now is it?

Yeah, be patient. I'm sure the guys at MS are being whipped about it as we speak .

Yes. I'm trying to be patient. But now my C++ compiler doesn't run either. So I'm downloading visual studio (2gig, again from the school) and i'll try to compile with that.

I usually use notepad and G++ (runs through command prompt) but even with a clean install there are missing files.

@ Zombieloffe - is there a point for stewie?

Stewie doesn't need a point, he's da man!

So Tetsu0, other than Hammer not working as it should, have you had any other bad experiences with Vista?

I myself am not getting it, because it doesn't have anything I need. And Microsoft's security policy is frightening at best..
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-14 18:16:32 UTC Post #212489
Um.. well.
No other bad experiences yet. Right now I'm installing the Vista BETA patch for Visual Studio because i have no other C++ compiler.
And i also managed to find an .iso mounting program.
So no other bad experiences yet. I'll let you guys know.

All you guys say you wont go to Vista, and go to Linux. Cheers, Im happy for ya, I'll stick with XP for awhile. However when DX10 games come out, Ill be changing to Vista, as it'll be time, DX10 is a main vista thing hey? Once Nvidia gets their drivers straightened out Ill not have a problem with it. But I can see the performance hit now, and I've experienced it on another HD...it likes its ram, but I have 4gb to spare...but really, Ill go back to it being a useless but inevitable upgrade...XP will stop being supported, and Linux wont play DX10 games I'm guessing...unless the Open Source wizards can whip something up ;)

People bitched about XP because games ran slower, you had to get a faster system and it was buggy as hell. Now that all of these problems have been fixed and XP is stable, no bitching.
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-15 23:45:37 UTC Post #212624
XP came out and even more cried, and went back to 98.
I cried, but my tears were of happiness. No more random Blue Screens of Death and system freezes. XP was the definite Windows upgrade. Anything new and useful they come up with could be included in XP updates. But since money is all that matters to them, they'll have to wait and wait to get mine ;)
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-15 23:50:43 UTC Post #212625
Yeah XP was always stable for me... always 100000000000000000000% better than the OS that can't be named! :P

Well... hopefully it'll still be here when that time comes.
I wish people would stop bitching. Because upgrades such as these are necessary. Please tell me people aren't going to be running windows xp in 2050.

Lol. Palm pilots will be running vista version 24 by then.

Anyway. I got the new patch for Visual Studio and it works. Now i'm going to download and install hl2. I'll let you guys know what happens.

EDIT ::

Seems i already had half life 2 installed, and i NEVER got 65 fps before. At some points i peaked at 109. I think it might be running even better than before!!

I think.

Anyway the point is. Hl2 and such do run fine.
Thank god :)

I would definitely like Windows Vista, but I would have to get it copied. I dont plan on paying the large price tag for it. That, or otherwise I will need a new PC with Vista on it already.

I actually got to try it in a computer store the other day for about 5 minutes, and I kinda liked the look of the GUI more than I thought I would, but I still wouldn't buy it.

It was only five minutes, because then a salesman came and kicked me off, muttering something about how they had lost every customer that actually tried to use anything with it.

Nah, I was really just in a hurry to get out of there. :P
