im thinkin of buying milkshape 3d but i am wondering a few things...

With the program alone can you add movements to your created models. And i mean movements as simple as the xen hair on half life 1.

Also, is it extremely hard to get good at if you give it time, or can you eventualy make almost anything... i want to make some custom very simple monsters etc...

Yes, you can do animation with MS3D.

And as for your second question, it depends on the person. In my opinion modelling (at least with MilkShape) is relatively simple to learn, and there are plenty of good tutorials for it out there.

Plus, it's an incredible bargain at something around $20, and you have full ownership over anything created in the program (unlike Max or Maya).

As for espen's post, MS3D has a shit-load more plugins than Max for HL, and they're already installed.

Wouldn't hurt to actually read posts.

At least you can select vertexes in the 3d view, so you don't get lost in the 2d view windows.
So you're annoyed by that as well? Same here... :/

Use the selection editor tool, it lets you select faces in a 3d window. You can also hold ctrl or shift(one of those) to select vertices in a 3D view.

I wouldn't recommend Milkshape for anything other than model hacking or simple low-poly modelling. Animating with it, UV mapping with it, and smoothing with it is vastly more complicated than it should be and it doesn't even work as well.

well if it gets the job done, all i gotta do is make a few very simple things like a little bit more complex than xen_hairs.

by the way, can i get my created models to move around as well as funcion at the same time"ex.:say i make a bat that flaps his wings. Can i get the bat to fly around by folowing path_corners or tracks as well as him continuing to flap his wings at the same time." =?=

ok well than say if i put a crap load of effort into getting good at modeling and make some weird wing flapping aliens or something, will you or anyone beable to help me get him to fly around? :) :) :)

Maybe i can somehow use the codes for the monster_flyer_flock to my model or something?

Why don't you just replace the flyer flock's model?

awesome idea

I've done both 3DSMax and Milkshape. Max ftw by far, way more powerful than milkshape.

Observe.

Maya is production media based, requires much work to get the raw low poly some games require. Now for more of the next generation stuff i don't see a problem with it, but for HL, its the suck.

Not that you can be limited to only 1 software, i say use them all if you have the money.

Or the bandwidth. No self-respecting modeller who isn't working for a company actually buys modelling software.

yeah, true.

Soon, all tools and resources will be free, but products will get price jacked.

Yeah, well. Such is the way of things.

Oh well. Pirate version of Maya 8.5 on OSX for me soon!

ok , i followed a tutorial and made half of a jet. Now i just have to duplicate it and mirror it. When i mirror it, it does not directly attach to my first created side but ends up far away. This is because my jet is not right up against the z axis. How do i get the model's side to allign with the z axis ? by dragging it myself it wont allign perfectly...

I use SolidWorks to make models for work, here is an example, I dont know if I can use this program to do modeling for HL
