Working on a new map. Here's some blah so far.

Still working on it. Once the geometry is cleaned up and some textures get applied, there will be some proper testing and feed back to help polish the map into its final form.

i'll post it in the unfinished vault monday.

...and I know, the layout isn't perfect to the map, but I misdrew the layout initially so things weren't lined up when boxing it out.

That looks like another r_speeds consuming map.

Looks great! Can't really see much from the screeny, but it definately follows suits to your other maps!! From the looks of it those roofs are curved right?... the near one looks just like a slope and very boring.

Although imo, I would probably cover the massive gap up so the player can't go space-walking... lol! :)

Pillars are.... boring atm, unless they have any details which I can't see. Could you post another screenshot with better lighting?

Otherwise, great - don't give this one up!!!
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-14 13:56:26 UTC Post #219050
crap, oh well i note it and change it later. The roofs are suppose to resemble the one in the upper left.

It'll be in the unfinished vault in two days so you may run through it.

Rimrook you are the absolute worst, most pathetic excuse for a mapper I have ever seen. Not once have I seen you post anything that displays a remote level of skill, much less anything interesting.

Looking good there, reminds me of Sancifar or an Escher painting. Is the world going to fall off into the sky at the egdes like it is now?
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-14 16:21:28 UTC Post #219081

I'm gonna try blend it out into the sky.

EDIT: Hey! Muzz stoled the first post spot!!! :D And yeah, it'll have the R_Speeds of Sancefar, generally low but when you look across, it ranges up to 1500 wpolies. Which was never a problem in the past. If they go higher, i've considered room for dropping them to a doable level.

Lookin' great!
Judging from the layout - this could be a pretty decent HLDM map..

I love the texturing.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-15 12:35:00 UTC Post #219156
I think it'd look great with some nicely done rocky terrain and foliage.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-16 13:22:01 UTC Post #219218
rocky terrain and foliage.
Terrain? No. Polycount is already high enough. Unless permitted
Foliage? Limited. Only one tree model will be used.

I'm keeping the content limited, though I will do with texturing nicely, there will be a new sky as usual, and again one tree model. No one wants to sit and wait to download stuff while others are having fun.

EDIT: I know I know, this is the second day in a row I forgot to post the boxxed out crap in the unfinished thread. I'm under alot of work for school right now, so hold off for a moment. I can work on it tommorrow evening and then post it for criticism.

Still deciding on the textures. I think it should be made of stone like Sancefar. But I have a roommate that says it would look unique in all wood. I don't see this structure being made of entirely wood, but it might work, and will definitely look unique.

Wood or Stone?

I can imagen it in stone - but not in wood.
Though wood sounds interesting. :x
Can't you try both and see wich looks the best?

Wood would look terrible with this architecture.

Those buildings look like they are made of stone, but please not like sancefar. I'm tired of that boring old castle rimrook theme. You always make maps in that theme, it's getting boring. Maybe you should make those Gazebos in a more victorian, gaulish or norman style.

Here is a pics of norwich cathedral, it inspired some of the archtitecture in my map ocean temple:
http://www.parm.net/gallery/d/3947-3/Norwich_Cathedral_arches_in_the_quadrangle.jpg?g2_GALLERYSID=547ade04dbd53c5bad1ed6271552c16e

This is just to give you some insperation, but I've seen a real victorian gazebo and I think you should look at the design of some. Search for pics of cathedals, they will help you alot in thinking of a new theme. Ely is also a very nice one.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-19 15:57:23 UTC Post #219536
Yeah, i'm bored of some things too. But Elon Yariv to the rescue!

not really, it says i can't view that image.

Norwhich looks like a glorified Sancefar...

I'm looking at victorian stuff now.

EDIT: I like this one.

Try tintern abbey, Ely's cathedral and salisbury cathedral. Also I'm sure florence has something to offer too, just don't use that boring old castle rimrook theme, I hate it. Use other colour in addition it white or brown. Use green, blue and red, use lots of contrast, it looks good.

oh. I'm bored of my frequent themes too ya know. thats why this is taking so long.

Florence looks nice. I'll make a note of it. Maybe I could do something really different and go with a modernized look with some patterns or something.

I have my color set, which are a dark navy blue, dusty phthalo blue, dusty crimson, a dark yellowish green and a light pale yellow. I'm already ahead of you there, only i don't know what colors are what yet.

Here's a thought, maybe a combination between wood, stone, and florence/victorian stuff?

That might be good, it's always nice to have more then one metirial or style. Just don't exagurate like I did in ocean temple, or else it will look a bit like it's in Las Vegas. :P

Im not done with it yet so chill out. Besides, I'm not sure where that stuff is going to go? Any Ideas?

I just worked on the geometry and lighting today and briefly modified a few things.

EDIT: The items might change a bit, but other than that, the geometry is set and the only thing that is left is texturing. I'll be doing that as soon as I get a good block of time to do it. Probably this weekend.

well you certainly must rid yourself of these repeating textures that's just hideous.

and some real screenshots might help

Or you could try out the map :D That one screenshot 'IS' the map. From what I saw there isn't much to hide. Looking great and congrats on getting a secret email from Acclaim.

320 x 240 is hardly a fucking screenshot unless we're playing Nintendo DS or some bullshit like that

I can't be arsed to play this, just post a full sized screenshot, goddam wanks.

The current Acclaim (old Acclaim went bankrupt in 2005 and sold away the name) is a free MMOG developer. I'm surprised you haven't gotten any better job offers considering your abilities.

Have to start somewhere, and most career jobs like to see real job experience.

besides, i'm still schooling and i have a whole year left. I have a high success rating and GPA so an internship is really possible and that'll probably be somewhere nicer.

VERY much liking that black fade on the buildings.

Very very nice, but a bit cramped. It couldn't really be played with more than 4 people at once. It wasn't too different from your usual style, but that's alright with me. :)

The only thing I could think of that you could fix would be the ambient sounds. They're only coming from one point on the map, and it's horribly obvious with my 5.1 surround speakers.

I'm not going to bother pointing out what you did right here, since you did everything else as well as you normally do. I think my compliments would just seem redundant.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-29 22:11:35 UTC Post #220463
yeah ambience is blah. if i didn't add any, people would complain. And what ambience could I possibly add besides wind? i tried crickets but i know they get annoying fast. i can always update it.

Yeah, I thought the wind sounds were good, it's just that they were only coming from one point, which made no sense. Some weird kind of sound emitting from the lamps would have been cool, too.

Turbo CAD actually.

I mimic the hammer grid and plot it out, however, doesn't do well with elevation. the stairs on the plan didn't match with the actuall elevation, so I improvised, as well as modified to add some flow.

The base layout was derived from a random scribble a friend did. I turned the scribble into a flow map and built around it until it was a map. I've been doing this lately and it works retardedly well, especially if someone else do it.
