I think I made up my mind, Im gonna upgrade myself from Windows to Linux! Im so tired of this Microsoft bullshit. But wich Linux version Im gonna switch to is yet undecided. Any suggestions?

I really hate Microsoft, yesterday when I was talking with Hunter on MSN, I got a message saying that the name Bill Gates was used during that chat instance and that the conversation was now monitored. They can go to hell.

So, on my to do list:
1. Get Linux.
2. Violate my Windows XP installer disk.
3. Buy a Macbook.

So, about that Linux versions, wich one should I get?
I already tried Linux PC and loved it, but I heard of some new versions out there?

Hahaha...I find it hard to believe MS had anything to do with that.
Mind you my friend said he called the FBI gay and his MSN wouldn't open for the rest of the day...

Anyway I can't contribute much to this thread but thought I'd share a chuckle.

Not likely. Do you really habeeb that?

It's called a Linux distro (short for distribution), not version. I'd go for Ubuntu, it's awesomely easy to use and set-up and really user friendly. You really don't need anything "heavier".

Everything's monitored through the NSA's ECHELON supercomputer system. Many years ago they denied this. After September 11th they announced it as if it was something new - just like Homeland Security (which we now know to have been set up prior to 9/11).

If everything is compatable with Linux, why not?

I think it's a good idea - anything's better than Microsoft.

...And eugh, Vista blows
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 05:05:29 UTC Post #222184
Vista is the worst pile of shit ever released! I refuse to get Vista, and so does so many others. There are a lot mor Linux and Mac users now that they've released Vista, and the have the nervs to blame pirates!

I wont buy anything label'd Microsoft anymore, I just wont.

Problem is though, you would still need Windows for mapping, gaming, etc. I don't know how much of that you do, but wouldn't that interfere with your goal of running a Microsoft-less system? :

You can run Windows apps through WINE or Cedega. The latter costs jew gold though.

Linux can run everything Windows can, and a hell of a lot more.

Plus: It's stable, it's better looking, it's more proffesional, it pisses Microsoft off!

Hey, for $250 I get Windows, which includes:
  • A shiny new version of paint
  • A shiny new DVD
  • A shiny new GUI
  • A shiny new copy of HD DRM (i'll have to get this eventually)
  • A shiny new EULA to sign off my privacy to Microsoft
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 17:32:50 UTC Post #222297
Don't you mean "- A shiny GUY"? ;)

This is the wrong place to say that you've just bought Vista, Dave.

It's like telling your black friends that you've just joined the KKK...
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 17:48:09 UTC Post #222300
Vista isn't that bad. They've made all sorts of subtle inprovements to it like seperate volume sliders for each program. Back when they first announced the required computer specs, I was floored, but now those specs are the norm. (You'll still want a really fast CPU, dedicated DX9/10 graphics card and 2GB+ of RAM though. Ironically, as I found out using my friend's computer, is that these specs only run Vista comfortably rather than insanely fast in XP.) Once Vista becomes mainstream, the chicken and egg problem of software releases/ bug fixes will be solved and there'll be no problem with Vista. But if you want to jump ship and use a less compatible, harder to use or more expensive computer, fine.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 18:14:17 UTC Post #222305
I doubt that Vista will EVER become mainstream, you can read about all sorts of companies switching to Linux, even the Swedish police and the French govermet switched! Windows is on it's way out, Mac and Linux are getting the attention they so deserv.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 18:33:41 UTC Post #222309
I can agree with less compatible (even though Linux can pretty much run anything Windows can) and harder to use (even though Ubuntu is so easy to operate a child could do it) but more expensive? Kid me not! Vista alone costs a MINIMUM of like $130, and the hardware required to run it quite a lot more. Almost all Linux distros are free and run on almost anything. Stop being a stupid douche.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 18:33:58 UTC Post #222310
As much as I hate to admit it, Windows is not leaving anytime soon. People will realize Linux is better, but the conversion for ALL the software on Windows will be slow, painful, and unfortunately won't happen for another couple of years. BTW, I played with vista ultimate in the back of staples store after closing on the day it came out. Didn't think it was worth the money.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 18:35:24 UTC Post #222311
Oh snap!

I am 100% sure that Windows Vista will be mainstream. It is a certainty like death and taxes. Windows will dissapear when PCs as we know them today dissapear. The Swedish police and French government are not mainstream and they'll have to deal with unsupported hardware and 15 open-source versions of solitare distracting people. "All sorts of companies" use Windows: http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/a/a4/250px-Blue_Screen_Phone.jpg (not just on embedded devices like ATMs but on PCs, registers, PCs connected to sewing machines/ heavy machinery/ air traffic controller PCs, etc).

Plus Linux needs DirectX of some sort. You can't make games without DX.

(Does Wine emulate DX? I haven't booted up a linux machine in like 2 years)

Are you absolutely sure that Hammer will run under Linux? I read an article about that a while ago, and nobody could get the 3D view window to work.

Anyway, you'll never run new games as well as you'll be able to on Windows. I know that for a fact.
Posted 17 years ago2007-05-16 19:03:26 UTC Post #222319
Hammer (at least Hammer 3.5) runs in WINE fine, though it takes a bit of configuring to get 3D view working I believe.

Wrong. OpenGL is a far more stable platform for graphics, and it's compatible with OS X, Windows XP and Linux distros. Doom 3 was built on OpenGL architecture.

In fact, OpenGL has a lot of advantages over DirectX.

Haha, someone bought Vista :D.

What a tool.

Also, Ubuntu supported my digital camera much more readily than XP 64. Win.

OS X is nicer, though.
