I was just looking for a thread posted recently by Tetsu0 with a similar issue to see what the verdict was back then.

I lol'd.

The best advice he got was Re-Install XP. Sorry dude but Penguinboy is right. Vista sucks monkey balls.

Install XP.
Posted 17 years ago2007-06-05 10:26:09 UTC Post #224485
Oh real great advice there.

But seriously you'll just have to wait till some patch is made...Obviously Valve aren't going to sort it out for their old products and Microsoft doesn't care about Hammer so who knows...Maybe a patch that fixes all Open GL issues will arise.

And this is why I'm not getting Vista...It prevents the one thing I use a PC for >_>

It also slows your computer down! And you're not allowed to use wich program you want or install wich component you want... It's sick!

I use Vista at work. I have to get accustomed to it so that when the University switches over, I know how to help all the confused academics.

I wouldn't have it at home.

The fact that MS is almost actively blocking people from using OpenGL is awful.

The User Account Control thing (or whatever it's called, I turned it off after about 8 seconds) is possibly the most annoying thing in the history of the Earth. Good theory - bad implementation.

Some of the DRM features are horrific, even to one who does not pirate at all (anymore)

The system load, especially memory usage, is disgusting. Even at idle. Vista reserves all of your memory for itself as soon as it boots up. All your memory truly are belong to Vista.

It has a fantastic bug that sometimes makes copying files across a network take hours rather than seconds. It's almost even funny, because all of the delay is actually caused by bug in the code which calculates the time remaining. This bug has been christened "The Long Goodbye" by the tech community.

If you have a decent graphics card and a bucket full of RAM, then Vista does look pretty, in my opinion. But the changes are in no way practically useful. Only better looking.

Lots of software simply doesn't like it. For example, DO NOT install Nero Burning ROM unless you've got the very latest new version. Just trust me. You will hate yourself if you do. It doesn't just fail and quit....oh no. Try playing some videos after the installation fails. Then reboot your PC and try again. Yessssssss.........

And did you know Windows Vienna is scheduled to come out in 2009? That's before official support for XP ends.

Nein they can't just stop support for XP...So what exactly happens after rebooting the PC?

Wait until some decent OpenGL on Vista hacks come out. Until then, dual-boot XP.

To Tosse: Stop spreading lies. You're still in complete control of your computer as much as you are with XP. Just don't buy into DRM'd media.

Oh yes they can. XP Home is no longer supported. XP Pro is still supported for now, because of its widespread business use, but its retirement has already been announced. From the horses mouth:-

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-ca&C2=1173&x=12&y=12

And an article on it.

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39246991,00.htm
support for Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Centre Edition would end on 31 December, 2006.
Windows XP Professional, because it is a business product, will get "extended support" for five additional years following the expiration of mainstream support, which will come two years after Vista's debut
What do you think extended support means? ;)

http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/#Extended Support

(you might need to copy and paste that link sorry)
The Extended Support phase follows Mainstream Support for Business and Developer products.
At the supported service pack level, Extended Support includes:

Paid support
Security update support at no additional cost
Non-security related hotfix support requires a separate Extended Hotfix Support Agreement to be purchased (per-fix fees also apply)

Please note:
Microsoft will not accept requests for warranty support, design changes, or new features during the Extended Support phase
Extended Support is not available for Consumer, Hardware, Multimedia, and Microsoft Dynamics products
Enjoy the Microsoft future!
So what exactly happens after rebooting the PC?
Well it still boots. But the problem with playing video doesn't go away. I've tried quite a bit, short of re-installing (which is tricky to find time to do to my own pc at work) to fix it, but no luck so far.

Basically, Nero chucks up about 50 errors every time you play a video. You have to click OK on them all. Then the video plays, but sometimes it happens in the middle of videos too.

Uninstalling it doesn't help. I think this might be because MS licenced Nero's software for the inbuilt DVD/CD burning in Vista (and XP too, but its less capable in XP) and they might have a problem with each other.

Still working on fixing it though, so don't know really, yet.

XP Home is no longer supported.
According to the two sites you linked to, and the updates I'm still getting, it is. ;)

:o It's changed!

That'll teach me to read before I link to stuff I first read ages ago.

XP Home was originally retired at the end of 2006.

I guess enough people complained about it. Looks like it shares it's graveyard appointment with Pro now then.

I don't often come across XP Home myself now.

Zing X2!

By the way, I have XP Pro on my laptop, but never found any big advantage to it, and the few features that Pro provides don't matter much to me. My copies are both legit.

The advantages of pro are only significant in a domain environment.

Meh. XP updated or not - I'll still be using it. Hell, lots of games/programs released today are still compatible with Win98. By the time XP won't be compatible with the newest stuff anymore - all the future rigs will be capable of running Vista without any memory drain at all. And there'll probably be tons of OpenGL for Vista patches..

.. so I really don't see any problem here.

XP really is a great OS as far as windows goes. Far better then anything previous and Leeps and bounds better then Vista.

If it aint' broke, why fix it?

I am perfectly content using XP.

It runs both Half-Life and Half-Life 2. That's all I want.

It also browses to TWHL.

You know, by the time it's unsupported, I doubt I'll be mapping for HL1 anymore.

Is Hammer 3.5 better than Hammer 3.4? I know Screwdriver is still in beta, but I have that as just an executable.

Vista doesn't support OpenGL? Crap, I'm thankful I still have XP then.

Downgrades back to DOS
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-25 09:18:53 UTC Post #236991
Hammer 3.5 has model viewing support and numerous other fixes that make it technically better than 3.4. Please don't bump 4 month old threads for a question that could easily be shoutboxed.
