Think back, far back into the previous time when you made your first "map" that you were proud of. I'm sure that we have all made the tutorial map where they teach you how to make a room, light, and player spawn lol. Im talking about the first multi room / outdoor / map that you thought was the most awsome thing ever. :D

My first map was called Funarena , lol. In my opion it was still probably one of the best maps I have ever made cause it took me so long cause I was so unexpierenced. It was like an fy map with guns laying right next to you when you spawn. It was basically a big room with 2 platforms per side of the room (1 ontop of each other). At the top there were 2 sniper rifles.
At the start I thought the coolest thing was to make secrets lol, in fact I asked how to make a func_illusionary wall (i didnt know it was that at the time) and made a completely noticable hidden passage where there was an AWP. The lighting sucked (way to bright), the textures were all de_dust except for one that I tried to include which had my sn on it - but it didnt work cause for some reason -includewad wasnt in my vocabulary lol.
Soon I made an expansion - an upper level that was like an de_deagle5 map. It was actually a preety fun map, considering I was at the top of the world when I did it lol, and provided HOURS of fun. Maybe ill dig up a screenie of :D . See all that detail you can almost see it !

fy_explosive

...the masterpiece was a crate in a dark corridor that would explode, killing everyone in the map, if shot. The idea was for people to be careful and accurate an' stuff. Didn't work out. I didn't know how to kill entities either :)

My first map was a bit of a mish mash. It was a badly done (It was great at the time!) lab/pffice complex type thing with this glass walkway bridge going across this big hallway. It seemed like it was the dog's bollocks back then but thinking about it, it certainly was not. Because I was new, I had no knowledge of the correct scales and dimensions HL uses, so I used to 'guess'. I also used to think that you had to use the carving tool and hollow tool alot to make rooms etc. I also used to be so nervous about compliling, I didnt understand any of it but I just 'went' along with it.

Can't remember the name...but it was three rooms which were far too big, and the walls were made of water, so it didn't run :P
The entity setup was crap as well...I think it was a turret, a player start, a couple of sentries, and a couple of grunts. There were also buttons and a ladder. And some cool pillars!

I haven't actually finished any maps yet, ever. Although one that is almost completed which is really cool, is an SP map from the start of a series, high up in the siberian mountains, entrance to a secret base etc. All rocky and frozen.

Sweet...and also, I think Anonymous means the first map (Not necessarily finished, mine wasn't).

my first map ever(that i fouht was good), found here http://cariad.co.za/twhl/mapvault_map.php?id=779
was my first ever complete map, i used all the information i found in tutorials and put them into a map. The map i made before this was called waterworld, i gonna out it up for a laugh, only a few days though.
Posted 20 years ago2004-04-20 14:40:49 UTC Post #23210
My first map released map was Nuclear Core beta and I can't be bothered to post a link to it. I had made maps before that. One map in particular was good architecture and bad texturing. It didn't have any entities apart from a weapon, ammo, info_player_start and a headcrab.
m0p m0pIllogical.

I have a confesion, i wont be posting water world because, i tried to run it and it wouldnt so i went back to the .RMF and found this problem i have never seen before "no textures are avalible for this game. You must set them up in the textures tab of the options dialog box before you can edit maps for this game"? Any way i opened it up under spirit and saw these, kinda funny ho mush i used the carve button.

My first map was great too because i tryed out loads of cool stuff on it.
couldn't get my head around level changes though so it got real slooooooooooow. Looked to much like just another killing map though.
Posted 20 years ago2004-04-25 09:52:32 UTC Post #23908
I have made about 50 something maps. About 20 are worth keeping.

i have a few hundred maps made
Posted 20 years ago2004-04-25 13:21:05 UTC Post #23933
my first map was a box with a random texture, hollowed out, with an info_playerstart, a door that lead to nowhere, and a light.

My second was a big city for TFC,but it was too big to compile so I trashed it instead of taking out a building or two, or the sewers.
Posted 20 years ago2004-04-25 13:23:32 UTC Post #23934
my map was a big pink cube with a crate pyramid which i accidently set the pushable and when they broke they wouldnt respawn and since i didnt no how to do spawn point i put some deathmatches in the wall so it was quite funny
Posted 20 years ago2004-04-25 13:39:22 UTC Post #23935
and in my first map i used punctuation
Posted 20 years ago2004-04-25 14:50:41 UTC Post #23940
And my first map was...

Mmh, kindof silly to start my post with that sentence. Well, the first map I was able to compile was a L-shaped corridor, with 2 lights in it. Or 3. Since I made a lot of maps before that but never understood how to compile them, the map was of good proportions. Might have been more luck than wisdom, though...

The first map I published is Detention. At this moment, I'm still busy with my second DM map. I also did a part of a joint map project, wich is still going on now (a project with my fellow Dutch mappers).

humm that might be fun if it was a box pyramid lol
Posted 20 years ago2004-04-25 18:09:55 UTC Post #24003
I had experience making maps for other games before this like max payne, that was rubbish then i remembered that you could map for Half life, so i got the box of my dusty shelf of old games and installed it, the brush work and texturing was the only thing i was good at, i was very good at entitys and stuff.

In my maps folder i have about 200 maps only about 100 are mine, the rest ive downloaded from here and other places.

I know that technically the third map I started was the_valley_2
I dont have know however, I have loads of random stuff I used to mess around with and probably got through many many loads of unrefined stuff before starting valley (which I finished some 2 years later)

However, my first officially released map was concmap2001 (and the -r a few days later because I didnt really have a clue about mapping for tfc)

my fist map that had a plot was this (bear with me here)

You were an assasin in an office complex. You started in a storage room and had to crawl through a vent to kill these scientists in a HUGE room with HUNDREDS of computers. Kind of dumb.

My first release was dm_2fortvox and u can download it in the completed maps section.

http://cariad.co.za/twhl/mapvault.php?cat=2&str=&type=&author=&sortby=2&order=1&pg=9

a dm map with monsters in single player. none in mp

hmmmm....
My first map that wasnt a very oversized room with an wall missing must have been... Lab!
The maps name was lab :) had no story you started in an big room(oversized, of course):D with an mp5 2mp5grenades 3batterys an glock+crowbar and then you had to walk thru an xen area which actually jsut was an square room with some xen textures(which didnt fit at all) some headcrabs and then a slave, i think but that time i didnt know how to make doors NOT move at the z axis so all doors moved the same way (which made a big problem) because after the the xen area the doors would move towers you and not inside to the side :) !
Then some offices which was just square rooms with an desk that was larger than the scientist standing behind!!!

My first idea ever was an underwater base with some submarines. When I realised I that I can't bind ents together I decided to abort it. Then I started makng a CS map. It was almost finished. Something like a mesa with deep pit in the middle with a river flowing. Between the two cliff were a narrow bridge and in it's both ends fortress-like stone towers with room for snipers. Never completed it also.

The first map I've ever finished is in the example vault. Posted under the name of PhutureTech, not PTS. I've been mapping for more than two years but never completed a map, cause when I start mapping a great idea another grandious project appears in my mind and I leave the first concept... So I'm trying to make short maps. With something good enought included to make 'em more than a simple room with some stuff in it.

my first map... was a bit of a failer as it was too small and everyone died in 10 to 15 secs... it was called es_dust...
used scrolling conveyors to make it look like you were moving fast and it meant that my cars ( that u spawned on ) could have turrets and ladders door ect..

got idea from a assualt map in ut2004
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-15 09:46:33 UTC Post #41538
well my first map was a big (well, not as big) room with a box in the middle. It was dm map players start falling onto the box picking up shotgun with ammunitions, than they can fall runing for health and weapons or be "king of the hill" (or king of the box), i've added bots (there was actualy no need for waypoints :) ) And ...that was a cool map! Meat everywhere! Eh, i've made even WORKING light so that 1 side of box was actualy lit! :D yes, those were great times...
Posted 20 years ago2004-07-15 10:37:02 UTC Post #41552
my first was cleverly entitled "Ett" (meaning "One" in Swedish) and was basically a few rooms with some scientists and headcrabs. No story or anything, You just walked through with the allmighty Crowbar and killed everything in your way.

Only one texture was used in the whole level hehe.. and there were no lights so you'd have to play it with RAD off

PS: BTW..the texture used was the AAA texture ;)

My first map (well my only map really...) is named DM_Complex I lost it when my gramps formatted his PC. It was basically a series of boxes with weird lighting, red, green, blue and a tilted room. When you pulled one of the radiators of a wall it would spawn a env_steam.

My first map, funnily enough, was probably one of my most favourite simply because,

I didn't know a great deal about WorldCraft, so it was an ongoing challenge

I had loads of naive ideas

It played suprisingly well, apart from all the usual n00b errors

It was pretty ugly, but in a cool kind of way

...And I can't seem to recreate the bits in it nowadays that I thought were pretty good
Posted 17 years ago2006-11-20 15:07:19 UTC Post #203381
My first map was a CS: S map, i tried out hammer because i didn't have fast enough internet back then. In one week i built a map that had 2 floors, a roof, a boat, lots of water, and a large bridge.
It took 15 minutes to compile, even after tieing the whole thing to func_detail.
It looks like crap, even after improving it. The boat was made out of 2 func_physbox'es, they always sunk into the water. I even parented them to eachother (error).
