Hey all i hope i can ask this here...I'm just getting my feet wet in Hammer and i'm having some odd probs. like textures disappearing from time to time. Last night while trying a "cliff" tut i created a displacement for the grass on top "set to 3" and the rock of the cliff set to 2 like the tut went. And i lost the rock texture completely and couldn't retrieve it in the camera window. All the other windows showed the cliff being there but i had to restart Hammer just to try it again. It never let me get through the tut before i had missing textures again. It also has been, whenever opening up to texturize a block, that texture window, when i move it out of the way "trails" itself so i have multiple edges of that window ending where i place the window.

A ram issue? Should i up my CPU/GPUspeeds

Im running a AMD 4400, 2 gig's ram, 256MB Nvid. 6800GS.

Any help will do...

Well, it's not a ram issue that's for sure. My laptop is nowhere near as powerful as that but my Hammer is rendering at least 50 displacement textures. Maybe you are selecting the wrong faces to displace?

When you say the texture "disappears," do you mean it goes black and flashes around when you move the 3D view around? That probably means you have a model texture applied to the displacement, which doesn't render correctly, both in hammer and in-game (The same is true if it's applied to ANY world geometry). Check the name of the texture, and if you see "model" or "prop" somewhere (including the folder it's stored in), then you can bet your bottom dollar that it's a model texture. Change it with something that's not meant to go on a model, and the problem should take care of itself...

As for the window repeating itself, if I remember correctly, Hammer's windows won't refresh themselves if the cursor isn't in them (I may be wrong). After the window is moved, try moving the mouse into the view, or moving that particular view around, so it refreshes itself. The repeated window ought to go away. If not, then you should check to see that your graphics drivers are up-to-date.
