This has been annoying the shit out of me for some time now, and I'm fairly certain other people are a bit ticked off too;
Are valve really going to release retail Portal + Ep2 + TF2 only in the orange box? I.e. bundled with HL2 and Ep1 - i.e. forcing us to buy games we already have. I'm hugely annoyed at this and it's really quite the asshole tactic by Valve. Forcing people to repay for the same thing is just ridiculous, and honestly, nothing I expected from Valve.

Sure, TF2+Portal+Ep2 might be released on steam - but I'm fairly certain that if it is, it'll be a later release than The box and more importantly, it's on steam. I just don't like buying virtual copies of games.

Unless they bring back The Black Box before release, I'm seriously gonna warez the games. There's no way in hell I am paying for games I own, no matter how low the price is. It's a matter of principle.

In any case, discuss.

Unless I'm mistaken, the orange box will be available over Steam as well as retail, so I don't understand why they wouldn't be available individually. HL2, CSS, and DODS could all be bought in a pack, or one by one, so I guess it's kinda the same scenario here.
As for consoles, nobody gives a fuck.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-24 19:26:38 UTC Post #232806
I'm pretty sure the three we don't own are going to be released as a package on steam.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-24 19:45:07 UTC Post #232808
steam always comes BEFORE the retail, or at least at the exact same time. valve gets more money from steam than from retail.

Come to think of it, didn't Valve actually let us know, when they ditched the black box, that it was only dropped from retail and not from Steam?
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-24 20:09:05 UTC Post #232811
well, its obvious that there will be every package under the sun, from the "hl2 pack" (hl2,ep1,ep2) to the "black box pack" to the "orange box pack" as well as some kinda TFC/TF2 amalgamation

if they do do that shit ZL hooks me up with the warez link you'll be using

Valve have said that people who get an extra copy of Episode One and HL2 will be able to give it away to someone who doesn't have 'em, free of charge. WHOOPIE DO VALVE, THANKS FOR MAKING ME FEEL BETTER.

While I've been fairly supportive of Valve in the past, they can kiss my ass now. Thanks to them, everyone who doesn't want to use the bloated cesspool of treachery that is Steam has to pay extra for games already owned. When Valve find out a way to charge us for not only loading Steam, but booting up, it will be a sad day.

i only bought episode one separately. i got my $120 off on buying the Valve Complete Pack, so I'm a bit cheap, and therefore, I'm 100% fine with finally getting a friend or so into Source games... =/

Although if they DID have the Black Box, I'd be much happier. DAMNIT VALVE! Oh well, that's the money THEIR losing on the "warerz" like Zombie... =) Good fucking job Valve.

completely changes mood

i'd have to disagree. just because they cancelled the black box doesn't mean that you should just not buy the game(s). thats just hurting yourself. I can understand that people on dialup (like Ant), and people without access to credit cards (like Ant??), and people whose ep1 crashes every time you want to play it (like Ant!!!), are pretty well screwed over :/

....but otherwise, either spend the extra 20 bucks or whatever on orange box or give in to steam. this'll be my first ever steam purchase, this coming from a hardcore boxart lover and collector.

bitching and whining and saying you wont buy it just because the company isn't conforming to your exact desires is just immature and stupid. so, to you all, i say fuck you, and stop complaining, you whiney little bitches. with the exception of the three cases mentioned above. (no credit, no internets, no stability)

Penguinboy is a Valve shill. My reason is principal (what the heck does looping sound crashes have to do with anything?)

I'll wait until Episode Two + Team Fortress 2 + Portal is offered at retail. I'm not bowing into their pressure. I could understand their move if it provided me with a benefit as well, but it's just trying to squeeze more money out of their customers.

On a similar note, iTunes knows it's selling a crippled product, so it provides a reduced price.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-24 22:13:29 UTC Post #232819
well you'll be waiting a loooong time. they wont ever come to retail by themselves as a package. and obviously if your game crashes you wouldnt want to buy it :/

Dave, it will be offered as retail. Just with, like, 80 other games :combine:
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-24 22:29:34 UTC Post #232823
If that thing about giving away the game you already have is true, someone give me their Episode One! :)
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-24 22:32:10 UTC Post #232824
Oh well, Bioshock, UT3, Crysis, Halo 1+2+3, here I come.

World Crafter: Yeah, I think VALVe pulled that "give the CD keys to your friends" excuse out of their ass. That's what guest passes are for, we don't need to waste $30 doing that. I could of course, download a copy from the other digital distribution platform, and give the purchased to my friends.

[GtB]Blitzkrieg: I'd sell you my (used) retail copy of Episode One for $5, but Steam does not alllow this.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-24 22:34:22 UTC Post #232827
I would accept that transaction, but Steam does not allow this.

I could use this to re-sell my copy actually, but i'm afraid VALVe would notice and disable my account lol.

That's quite old news ZL. The first time i heard it, i wasn't very pleased, but there's nothing we can do. So either warez it or pay for already bought games. That's quite a tough choice isn't it?
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-25 04:19:56 UTC Post #232835
Principle? Ow cmom, stop being so uptight in the crouch..
The Orange Box has 3 new, I mean 3 new games, 3 new games I want. When you buy them sepertly you'd probably end with a just slightly cheaper, if not the same, price as The Orange Box anyways.

I think it's just fine, you get 3 compared to 2. I got hl2 Ep1 as a present anyways, I only bought HL2, like what? 2 years ago already?
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-25 04:49:45 UTC Post #232838
Who cares? The point is they're forcing us to buy games we already own. Doesn't matter how much MORE they bundle in the package, it still mean we're paying for shit we already have, and it's ridiculous.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-25 07:14:01 UTC Post #232842
Exactly. And I'm still going to buy it, that's what annoys me. I want TF2, but since Valve are money grabbing asswipes, they want to force everyone to use their convoluted system.

It doesn't really bother me at all. Obviously if they went ridiculous with the pricing it'd be a major screwover, but the fact that it's still well priced, and you're getting 3 new games is enough for me, the two older games are practically free.

Now I know it is bad IN PRINCIPLE, but honestly it's worth maybe a small grumble - not major whining about said principles and bad tactics. Seriously, they're a company doing what all companies do.

I don't care about Team Fortress 2 & Portal. I'd like to see Episode Two for $15, in a box.

Strider, you sound like one of those VALVe fanboys.

"wowowow! 5 gamse for only 50 dollars. i would give valve 200 dollars if i could"

"guys, i hear COUNTER-STRIEK 2 comes with the black box. calm down, it's worth 50 dollars"

Valve are being asshole by butchering TF the way they are.

And GameStop are assholes for losing my Orange Box reservation!

Im gonna buy it. Not over steam though.

I don't mind having two extra CD-keys

Yes, I can have another Half-Life 2 CD key ... to give out to my friends who either have one, or think gaming is for losers.
Posted 17 years ago2007-08-25 21:04:48 UTC Post #232890
The only game I'll be getting that I already have is HL2, which will be going to my brother. I have nothing to complain about.
Valve are being asshole by butchering TF the way they are.
Go play Fortress Forever. If you don't see how awesome the new TF2 is, you shouldn't play it. Don't call someone assholes for making an awesome game.

all of you seem to have forgotten that the three games alone will be cheaper over steam, as well as not having to pay for games you already have.

Posted 17 years ago2007-08-25 21:37:11 UTC Post #232893
I mean, this would be an outrage if the whole pack was like 80 dollars for everything. But I doubt it will be.

You're complaining about something that would probably be the SAME price for just 3 games, but you happen to be getting 2 more. Why complain? It's almost like doing a "buy 3, get 2 free".

Complain when they triple the price, otherwise, I'm gonna have to say "shut the fuck up".

How much cheaper, though? Cheaper enough to constitute the price of those 2 games, say 30-40 dollars? Or is it a good enough deal to save money?

EDIT: But I admit, when I wrote that I totally forgot about the black box, even after reading this thread. Anyone know the price of the black box, if it was to come out? Or did they not announce it?

Look, I'm a poor Uni student. Paying for stuff I already, even if its only a $20-30 price increase is still incredibly annoying. As well as that, I'm paying for a game that runs like batshit for some retarded reason (refering to Episode One here).

I already told you guys, the retail Black Box was canceled, but will still be an option over Steam! Who gives a shit how much it costs? It's going to be a lot cheaper and it's the exact package that you people are bitching about wanting.

I hate buying games virtually. I like to have the real thing in my hands.

well you're an idiot. the only difference between a steam purchase and a retail purchase is that one comes with a disk so you dont have to download it.

Burn the files to a disc and glue a Half Life logo on it. Hard copy, done.
