Hi guys, I came here just to say I blew the exam, together with another 11 students under my subordination... I just came home from uni and it's past 00:00 already, so I have to get some sleep now in order to collect energy for tomorrow's second attempt!

I really appreciate redka's having prolonged the deadline, but I won't do it in time again!

Well crap you did such a nice job on the pillar... well, maybe you can join the next?! : (

Updated hypercube:

http://captain0terror.googlepages.com/hypercube0012.zip

hypercube0009: normal/additive/125
hypercube0010: fast flicker/additive/125
hypercube0011: faster flicker/additive/137
hypercube0012: fast wide pulse/additive/105

They all look neat and different imo, that's why they're all in the download.

I probably should've done all the variations together in one map, with a bunch of different settings, but alas, I can't spend any more time on this! = )

Thanks to Tetsu0/srry: you make my heart warm = )

Nice alternatives for hypercube, my favorite is 0011.

Geomtry challenge #6
The election starts now!
ANYONE CAN VOTE, just once and you cant vote for your entry of course.
We have 3 entries, one of them is not textured, but it is a geometry challenge, not a texturing one, and there werent any restrictions about it, just a disadvantage.

My vote is Captain Terror's one, cuz I like how it looks like, some real antique columns, good brushwork, very well desinged
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-19 18:30:44 UTC Post #243833
I pick Tetsu0's. Ant222's was nice and very original, but also uncompiled/textured, which means a lot... ( I hope we get more than 3-4 votes, lol = ) )

You should make one too Redka!

Ant you better finish your pillar sometime or else... I'll hunt you! = )

edit: CRAP forgot to mention for the hypercube, PRESSING the light on the floor starts the rotation! (I forgot to make a proper switch for the thing)

Very sexy work and OMG I thought that was a model! I'm humbled by your hammer powers sir! (now we hafta do a heavy machine challenge woo yay!)

Well since the view participants we had are dying off, I'm going to play around with Klobb's balcony challenge for an unofficial #7. His original challenge and the base map can be found here:

Here's my #7 entry, but it's weird.

The challenge is about building the balcony, but I focused on the building itself and spend about 4 minutes on the balcony! The balcony turned out to be the under detailed portion of the entire map!

If I was spending more time on it, I'd add fancy supports underneath and adjust the proportions a bit.

Anyway. it was fun building this. Here's some screens and the bsp:

Cap'n Terror: Pretty cool, though the default textures just aren't working with that building.

Daubster: ?That's bleeding lovely, Ant. Poly/solid count??

Bleeding lovely: 260/1600. I haven't even tried to optimize it though... It can be reduced by removing double-tracks... Significally.

Also I have lighter vehicles with 600-800 faces:

But I am not gonna post all my vehicles here because they should be a surprise in my friend's mod! This last one is even textured!!

Ant22 are those Hammer shaded polygons or is it a model!? I seriously can't tell! : O Whatever they are: win.

Klobb: It was fun working on it, but I agree with Daubster the textures could be improved a lot. Is that Bionic Commando for you avatar?!
Captain Terror Captain Terrorwhen a man loves a woman

yeah its Bionic Commando. My favorite game of all time. yeah the textures are something i pretty much ignored i just really liked the windows. did u clip them or use vm
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-22 01:31:50 UTC Post #244005
ah I loved the bionic commando for nes. I found it a long time ago in arcade version but i can barely remember! (I think I have the arcade rom someplace but i'm not sure)

For the windows I cheated. Instead of VMing all the window pieces and creating, oh i dunno 60 brushes (if you made each pane it's own), I simply made one big brush, made it a transparent window, and it covers all the window holes, inside the wall. There could be a downside to this with the intersection, but since it's a func_wall It should be ok. It should be less r_speeds and look the same is the point.

the window panes are also func walls, and I had to make seperate ones for each side of the window. furthermore I had to seperate them from the glass about 5 units, else they would render weird when you walked to far away from them. (an easier/better fix to this might be to use a window texture with the panes in them).

I don't mean to.. interrupt, but creating a balcony isn't exactly... Geometry.
I mean, it includes world geometry but i think these challenges are getting a bit off-topic. Unless you want to take place of (and continue) Rowleybob's brushwork Challenges.

True enough Tetsu0. I'm racking my brain to think of new challenges and coming up dry. I mean we can go through a bunch of different polyhedrons and stuff I guess, but what else can we do that lies in the pure realm of geometry and is still fun/interesting?

K, new geometry challenge!

Challenge #7.1
Build a nice-looking mobius strip.

Challenge #7.2
Build a Klein bottle.

I will make one too! (in fact, I think the challenge author should always do a version of his own challenge = ) )

klobb:

Well, I indeed could do that! However it is so huge with so long supporting beams that I doubt it'll be a good thing to use in an HL-1 map... I considered building a giant excavator from a photo and abandoned it for the same reason.

As to the Mobius contest, for me it is more difficult than any vehicle, but I think I can make a cubistic bottle quite easily and then split it into two cubistic Mobius strips.

well i tried captain terrors latest challenges and i gave up after a few minutes. i tried vm and i just cant get it going ive tried following the tutorials about it but i think i just want everything to happen so fast. if someone makes either of them can they include an rmf so i can see it in hammer?
Posted 16 years ago2008-01-27 06:55:09 UTC Post #244392
Um, yeah, about that... = )

Klobb: You can use the same method we used in the sphere challenge for at least parts of the bottle.

For the trickier parts--the nexus of the klein bottle and the 1/2 twiest of the the mobius strip I would recommend using stuff made out of only 4-sided polyhedra (3-sided spikes): this should cut down on errors, invalid brushes and HOM.) Try your best to keep it neat from the start and on-grid, else you will have problems later! = )

Doing it that way is by far not the only method tho, I've seen people do really tricky geometry in hammer with clipping and using alt-E to scale (see the snarkpit sphere tutorial). This method is much faster but much more prone to errors imo. It's not a method I've ever been able to get to work for me.

Just when I've thought I've seen "every way" or the "only way" to do something, I'm proven wrong again, so use your imagination! = )
***

Yeah this i'm almost sorry I even suggested this challenge because it is such a pain in the ass... However tho, it's teaching me to make efficient use of visigroups with vertex manipulation: trying to VM massive groups of objects without hiding others in direct line of sight, makes a difficult task almost impossible to select the right verticies! :pwned:

I hope to have mine done soon but who knows! = )

Anyway, here's a funny pic (i think) with tons of verticies:

Tetsu0: ?what's with the second twist??

It's 360 degrees, so the Mobius topology is preserved.

MuzzleFlash: ?Its called showing off?

O-ho-ho! As against the other strips here, mine took me about 5-8 minutes, and adding another twist was as simple as:
1. Scale the section by 0.5 vertically,
2. Copy it,
3. Paste Special,
4. Fix misaligned vertices if there are any,

;)

Daubster: ?Very nice, Tetsu & Ant, but no-one's made the actual clean-looking thing, though.

That'd be amazing in Hammer!

Well, as to such a challenge, I don't like it. A challenge should consist of making a thing that'd be useful, or could be made useful after some canges. Where and how can one use an HL model of this cruiser?

Columns and vehicles are useful, Mobius strips, pipes and speheres are OK too because one can decorate his map therewith, or even base some archirecture thereon...

Wow where to begin... = )

Here's my version that took forever, and three differnt methods... three time's a charm I guess... It's huge and very big and quite large. Did I mention it's huge?

Clicky

I'll put the rmf and a dressed up version of the map soon hopefully.

Ant222: I'm very jealous. I wish I would have spent more time thinking about how to do it to, rather than going at my version in a brute force fashion!! ( it would have saved me ages!)

Anyway, i'm intrigued how it works exactly and can't wait to try it myself!

(c)striker: I love starcraft as much as anyone, but I'm not sure how this fits as a geometry challenge. (im using your last pic as my desktop btw! = ) )

TBH, I don't see any challenges in building it, unless you set a low wpoly limit or sumthin to make it fun...

Well whatevs anyway, if we can't think of a regular geometry challenge next (this one was kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel imo), I'd be happy to participate in your BC challenge! = )

Oh and (c)striker btw, for all that is holy pleeez use thumbs for the goddamn huge images, lol! = )

Tetsu0: SHA YAMATO OWNs INTERWEBS, obvously...
