Someone make a train or ball or something travel along the mobius strip's surface for a billion bonus points.

You're just avoiding the challenge(it's to hard) by saying it's not useful

Sorry Captain Terror for the big images . Next time I'll use thumbnails.

Great Job, Captain!

I wonder whether you resorted to the same method as in your version of
12-sided sphere when making sections of Mobius...

The_(c)Striker: Someone designed and modelled the cruiser in a 3d
editor, why would I need to map it (remake) in Hammer?

It's not so much difficult as laborious!

Penguinboy:
When you want to compile a *.rmf file, then a *.map file automaticly generated and the *.bsp is created from that *.map file (as I know). I also tried hlfix, but the same thing comes out. My suggest is a really dirty job, but works (I tried it myself). Save it as a *.map file and open it in Hammer, then you would see that some of the vertex points are bed positioned. Put them back with the vertex manipulation tool and always save it as a *.map file. I know that Hammer *.map converter is sometimes a crap, but I found no more way to fix it. Thats why I always keep my QUake ARmy Knife sharp...never happened thing like this with it...After you repositioned the vertices and still has problems, Maybe I can make it for you in Quark after a while.

Here's my half-hearted attempt to make the klein bottle cloning a 24-segment ring over and over on top of one another, and then using alt-e to scale the sections into the shape of the bottle. Then sum simple vertex translations to make it turn at the bottom. U'll notice tho I get stuck at the point where the bottle turn makes 90 degrees:

LOOk sea! = )

(it only took like 15-20 minutes to do so far!)

Tetsu0: awww :glad: it really does blow tho! = )

Penguinboy: Looks pretty cool how did you do it? I got it to downloaded by just making all the "swirls" func walls, tho it's not perfect obv:

Screenata

How'd you make it?! Probably wouldn't take much to make it errorless with a little tlc. the shadows look neat but not exactly like the screen tho, and I don know why but doesn't it look cool?! ; ) (I dun liek muffinz tho)

Ant222: YUp, the same rediculous slow method... at least I only had to make one one quarter segemnt and then paste it. It was a bitch though to make the brushes not look "inside out" lolz, if you know what I mean.

I'm intrigued as to how you do it! Giv me ur sekrets! :badass:

Captain Terror: ?I'm intrigued as to how you do it! Giv me ur sekrets!?

I uploaded my column several posts ago, go dl it! Mobius is just the
same save I used thin parallelepipeds instead of 8-sided cylinders.

EDIT: Didn't notice your comment on my column, so you've seen it!

To create a column section, make a cylinder and face-split each of
its sides into two triangles. Now you can twist it. Same about Mobius.

I'll try to redo my klein bottle with less sides tomorrow (24 sides is too much of a pain!). Anyone else?

Also, if you have a good idea for a new geometry challenge, speak up, though I must say I'm getting tired of geometry... I'd literally kill some one for a series of texture challenges! = )

It's no surprise taking into accont teh things you do... What about
mapping a large and naturally looking cave where one would be able to
get lost? That'd be a great final of the geometry challenges, don't you
think so?
Posted 16 years ago2008-02-02 21:54:04 UTC Post #244881
sounds fine to me. I'm going to try to do my klein bottle for the heck of it right now, and then I'll get to work on my cave.

Shall we make #8 officially the cave challenge?

edit: btw are you guna upload ur mobius rmf? I'd love to steal, err.. examine your method and touch it! I'll upload mine if you upload yours!! = )

It's okey if you don't i understand, I'm just overly curious ; )

Well unless somebody has a better idea, lets do the cave, ore we can wait 'till after the next entity challenge for a nice change. = )

Finally, here's my completed Klein bottle and Mobius Strip. The Klein bottle could be presented much better with texture/render/lighting properties, but the compile takes too long and I'm too impatient, plus, I've wasted enough time on the damn thing (though it was leagues easier than the mobius strip ; ) )

Klein Bottle Download

Mobius Strip Download

Read on if ur interested in the construction details:

The Klein bottle was made by simply using alt-e to scale sections of a 12 sided pipe made of "triangles" to the desired thickness and shape. for the curvy parts, I again used alt-e for some more scaling and VM to translate the pipe pieces to look curvy.

One 90-degree joint was needed to make the pipe "flip" back up to the top. to do this I just vmed 2 opposing pipes to make a crude 90-degree corner, and then used VM translations and scaling to make them look ok.

The section where the bottle "flows through itself" is a func_illusionary so you can walk/fall through the pipe. (you can slide/fall/climb through all the pipe sections smoothly, but you will have to noclip to get to the top and in the middle of the bottle.

Render options are normal/additive/100.

lighting is a light_environment at 15 with default light color

Texture scales are set to 3 and the interior of the pipe pieces are nulled out.

Any more questions about the Klein bottle or the Mobius, feel free to pm or ask in the thread! = )

One of the neck fragments does look what you call "inside out", I believe, but otherwise it's great. You've mastered the triangular method. High time for writing a tutorial "On making anything one can contrieve without those boring invalid solid structures"?

Speaking of caves (if we do a cave challenge), I just watched a really cool episode of BBC world: Caves.

Watch (it worked yesterday but doesn't seem to be now, prolly be up later...)

Not only is there cool reference material for cave-making ideas, but It's funny how many cave-dwelling creatures featured in the show resembled HL monsters! A barnacle-like creature among others.

The deep caves also have mudkips! (I'M NOT JOKING!) There's these eyeless salamanders with external lungs that look a lot liek them!

Lawl sure, if you can think of a good idea, post it up (btw you can still participate in a minicompo you host!)

If noone can think of a good one and i get an idea, i'll post it, though I'd much rather have another entity challenge: they seem a lot more fun!

Make a brushed based tree. Could be dead, alive, whatever.
You have 9 days.
Must have Playable BSP and RMF in zip format.
Needs not be in the vault. External host is preferred ;)
Unless you submit as a pre-fab.
Custom textures must be wad-included.
We all know steel and rust doesnt grow on trees.
Nor are trees pressure treated lumber (damn hl.wad)
Ready..... GO!
Deadline : May 8th. Or whenever we have more than 2 entries.

I only just started and now Wally starts to bug me.

After batch conversion in Wally my texture looks really bad with reduced colors! I can't figure out how to fix it.

Anyone know how?

Forget it, i fixed it. I was using the Quake 1 wad2 file type instead of the Half-Life wad2 wad file type.

Looks great HLGenius! = )

Possible suggestions for more pretty:
-some of the leave bows--which look great btw--look like there not attached
-some of your textures look stretched, try hitting "face" checkbox when they're selected. It might be tricky to make them all line up though, but I'm sure you can do it! People better than me a texturing may have some tricks to offer for this.
-Make the island bigger so you can easily step back to appreciate it, or scale the thing smaller.
-tweaks with lighting and sprites to make it look like a hazy tropical day. The lighting in Muzzle's entry was nice, maybe he has a tip or too.

Sorry for the wall of text! I go overboard a little sometimes!

)

edit: HLG's entry inspired me to experiment with some custom transparent textures:
User posted image
I know the textures themselves suck, but I'm just experimenting with different ones and at different scales and texture application methods to see what looks best. I'm trying to make the branches partially hidden but still noticeable to appreciate their details. (without much luck)

ahh crap
i hate how hammer needs you to have a wad to play a map that does not even include a texture used in that wad.

Like i have zeldamod.wad in my setup because i haven't taken it out from making my compo entry, but i didn't use a texture from it on my tree :(
fucking hammer
comp ended a few days back so i can't really do anything about it, and no i did not put leaves in, this tree is dead man. :-P
And not all trees have green leaves.
