Hi im new to mapping and have run into a problem. I started making a map and it was going ok. But now when i test my map (F9) hammer doesn't save my changes. I have added some more stuff and i can see it in the hammer windows, but when i play it the changes isn't there. Like if i move the player_start to a new place i still start on the old one. Does any one know what i can have messed up? I would really like to continue making my map. :zomg:

Maybe the latest version of your map has an error that prevents the new bsp from being created? So check your compile-log for errors.

Thanks alot that solved it. It found an error in some texture, so i changed it.

What killer-duck is saying is correct, though it could also be a hammer glitch: Hammer, unbelievably, sometimes compiles a different map than you specify. This can be a very confusing/annoying glitch to say the least. (the reason I stopped using Hammer to compile my maps)

You could try renaming the map to fix the aformentioned glitch, or, for a much better solution: DO NOT USE HAMMER TO COMPILE.

I just compiled a diary/log of errors and mapping problems, and at least 1/3 of the trouble was directly caused by hammer compile process and Hammer-related glitches.

Seriously, do yourself a big favor, get batch compiler now!

We'd be happy to help you set i up if you need. = )

Thanks but i think i will keep using hammer a while, because im just started mapping and it works quite well for me.

Damn, now all walls in my house all disapeared. They are cut in some strange way and i can't run the map. What does this mean?

If you got an error in your compile always google it. Tommy has many good tutorials and huge list of compiling errors with solutions:

Never use hammer to compile as its mentioned before, its a good advise...

Nothing wrong with compiling in Hammer. Unless it doesn't work for you. :D

What other program can i use if hemmer keeps jerking around?

If you think about compiling see Captain Terror's post, but if you think about another map editor try Quark, offical homepage

Im new to this. The compiler creates the BSP right?
Posted 16 years ago2008-02-15 19:17:07 UTC Post #245723
You are right. When I used Hammer I had many problems to compile with its integrated compiler (maybe my fault), thats why I suggest to use batch compiler or any other compiler. Now I use Quark, because I like it better and use it quicker, it is an advanced map editor (sure not all members agree with that). It looks like much more complicated, but it is not too hard to learn how to use.

Ok so can i still create the maps in hammer but compile it in batch?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone here actually use Hammer for compiling?

I do,

I write a bat file for my compiling.

Why don't you use Hammer?

Redka, you have me intrigued by this Quark Editor... i'm trying it today : )

Potatis: There are lots of reasons BC is better, but it just comes down to personal preference in the end. (lots of great mappers still swear by it)

I rebelled for a long time against the Batch Compiler because I liked it the Hammer way, but now, I wouldn't go back to the Hammer for compiling in one million years1 = )

If you're interested in Batch Compiler advantages, read on:

-The most important reason for me is Batch Compiler never compiles the wrong map, as hammer is known to do from time to time. (a very disconcerting glitch if it's never happened to you). This is the number 1 reason I switched, but for all these other reasons, I'm glad i did:

-you can continue to edit the map (if you want) while your last compile is still going. This way, you can test certain areas of a map and work on others with no wait in-between.

-Arguably faster( I don't notice a huge difference, but people say with bigger maps it gives you compile speed improvement.

-you can monitor the compile progress in real-time, without it freezing

-Highly customizable, Lots more options you can toggle with checkboxes for every compile stage. You can save profiles for different compile configurations easily. (has a checkbox for every rad compile switch for example).

-can't think of any more atm, but I only wish I had switched over sooner.

Now i have installed batch and i think i managed to greate a bsp of my map :D . But the "Leaf portals saw into leafWARNING:" problem still remains so my map is unplayable. I don't think i will be able to rescue my map , but if i use batch in the future will i get rid of these kinds of errorrs? Or do i seriously need to change the way i do my mapping?
Posted 16 years ago2008-02-17 11:04:30 UTC Post #245818
Yay Batch compiler! = )

There are tons of threads regarding this error. Go in the seach bar for forums, and enter "Leaf portals saw" in the textbox.

You'll find lots of causes and fixes, but if you're just beginning, rebuilding the map might not be a bad idea. (my first map was horrendous, as are most peoples, in terms of brushwork and just about everything else)

If you can't figure it out still, post a new thread with your compile log, and/or a link to your map so we can see. = )

Ok Thanks i will do that if i run into the problem again. But now i have started a new better map using Batch and it works great so far. I just want to make sure i am doing it right. I save the .map file from hammer and runs it in Batch that creates the bsp. Is this the correct way to go?
Posted 16 years ago2008-02-18 17:32:49 UTC Post #245933
Sure is. = ) You can open/compile the .rmf file too if you want to create the bsp.

(I don't know what the difference between .map and .bsp! = )
