This'll never work out. We had more of these so called "TWHL Mods" topics in the past. They all failed, except one, IIRC.

Maybe you should show us your mapping skills first.

that's a great Idea . Let's make a mod with random maps . Maybe one in spirit , it's more fun . That way we could have a "map-wiki" . A mod full of examples and fun maps \test maps .

It's not that hard . In fact , I thought at this idea since December 2007 , but I was afraid of asking it in the forums :) :) .

Its all about teamwork, leadership and organizing. If any of that fails, the whole project fails. I've seen it happen before.

all of these are possible without teamwork, leadership and organizing . You only have to have some will . And someone will assemble these maps in one big mod.

if you want teamwork, leadership and organizing , well , I'm in , but only in 2 weeks , because in 2 weeks I finish school and have lots of free time :) .

I can make some textures ( ripping :D :D :D , but sometimes I make some pictures with my mobile).

I can rip some models from sven coop ( it has lots of models ) - of course m we'll give them credit for the models .

I can make some sounds . I like making sounds . I even made 4 melodies . But I'm not that good at looping sounds ( actualy I tried once and the result was promising )

I can make some logos ... with gimp or photoshop (I like graphic programs and I enjoy modifying images using special effects and multiple layers altough I'm not very experienced but there are loads of tutorials on the internet)

And finally I can map .

Oh , I already know some HTML , so I can make a site too ( I know only basic things ... really basic things but I bought a book and I'll learn :D :D )

Remember : All kind of maps are welcome : Example maps ( we should build loads of them , or 5-10 big maps with lots of examples in each one but the first idea sounds better for some reasons ) and random campaign-like maps . and the mod should have a name like "Memories-Like" , or " Resurected-Life" or something like that ( it's only a sugestion , I know the name I wrote sucks :P )

Oh and one more thing : You , experienced mappers , should let the easy example maps for the beginners and try to build something difficult .

I'll even make a list with what example maps we should map .

Ok,I've read most of the posts in this thread.

From what I can tell, the dude with the idea is way to optimistic and naiv for this to work and everybody seems sceptical in general.

So Im gonna throw a wild idea into the pit; how about you take your already finnished HL singleplayer maps, add something similar to all of them and there you go.

you don't have to start a whole new thing with 99% talk and 1% work untill you all get tired of it and bail, all you'll have to do is to edit a few maps that you already have and then you're done.

Also, I can provide music. Im really swamped in work and music-creating as it is, so if anybody want some music, I can send you what I already have and then you can just take what you want.

A long time ago Andy fired up a mod like this, it eventualy failed, not quite sure why, but Muz is coming up with a few strong arguments, and since we cant have RL meetings it is very hard to effectively coordinate a team under the current conditions, let alone different timezones and working speeds.

Fuck source . A game isn't a game anymore . By 2015 we'll play games like watching films . A game is supposed to be a game not a reality fake . And Goldsource offers a lot more challenges than source , I guess ( excluding garry's mod :D :D :D ) .

Nobody can organize mods on TWHL. There have been many, but I don't believe a single one has ever been completed. At least, not a real mod anyway. I was in one, and that failed miserably (I actually blame myself for that, somewhat.) I think there have been small community-based mapping projects that have succeeded.

The largest problem is the lack of team communication.

It's not that there isn't a form of communication (Forums/PM's), but it's not "active" enough to have a conversation. This distance of team-members from eachother destroys the incentive of a mapper to make it.

Once a mapper acknowledges that he can just "do it later" or "do it in my free time", it just becomes easier to not do it. Therefor, they dont.

And so, it doesn't get done :/

Anyway, it's hard to spur people into making a 'random' map. It worked a long long time ago with TWHLmix (well it was released), but I believe that was because we still had some dedicated members who have now stopped mapping.

YEAH! Make a teleport that sends Gordon back to the medieval ages! I'll start working on a castle-siege map where you single-handedly fend off hundreds of futuristic enemies with just a crossbow and an onager.

Well if someone says: "Yeah" I'll make the map and throw it in the vault.
I can use something to keep me occupied for a while.

Tetsu0, you really shouldn't make a mockery of other people's ideas. the noob doesn't know all of the history at TWHL and therefore shouldn't be blamed for simple suggestions that will likely not end well. Im sure lots of people would want to play a random mod filled with random maps in a random sequence that makes no sense at all, and has no storyline.

This idea has - as it has been stated by others above - been attempted by more experienced people with real skills, and yet it has failed.
WHY oh WHY would this one succeed then eh?
I know "The Noob" isn't familiar with the history of TWHL, but it just suprises me when random old members joins this obviously non-experienced modleader when they are aware of how a mod should be created and what has happened before.

Do you even read the posts ? I said it should be filled with lots of example maps . You don't understand me , I guess . The point is not to be played , the point is to be a custom resources and inspiration source . The mod is for goldsource .And random maps in which mechanisms showed in example maps should be implemented .

And seriously , I know it was "the noob"'s ( the noob ? lol ) idea but i want to make it , too .

If I just wanted to build a story-based mod then , trust me , I wouldn't have asked for help(helping with the mod , not with the problems) in this so-called mapping community with members who often pisses you off .

this has already been done. it is called fun_matrix or something to that effect. there are several different mini maps and at the start of each new round a door opens and u go to the next map in sequence. i suggest you check it out. there are 2 maps with similar names and they both have the same thing going on.

I would love to a cooperative project, but you need a strong leader to set reasonable goals and be familiar with each member's mapping style and strengths, so he can give reasonable/effective assignments.

Off the top of my head I think HL_hotdog would be a good candidate if he were interested. If you guys can find a good coordinator with a solid idea/plan, i'm in.

I said a MOD with example maps and random maps in which mechanisms built in the example maps are implemented , with lots of custom textures , models , sounds etc .... so a mapper could a have a good inspiring source as well as a good custom resources provider .

But , you know madcow , I don't need to now the "history" of TWHL . You know why you can't make a mod here ? Because people like you . Even if a mod is stupid it's fun to make . What the heck ? And somebody with more will can build a better mod and so on .

Who feck wants to play a "mod" stuffed with pointless example maps? That doesn't add anything to the actual gameplay. If you really want a TWHL mod, simply put together a nice singleplayer map. If everyone who's interested in making a singleplayer map, we'll stuff everything together and make a mod out of it, Reissues style, where the player can pick a map.
Then at least there's some gameplay, puzzling and combat involved and each individual map or maps will have their own storyline.

I dunno, i would love to walk through elaborate example maps, like one devoted to depicting/explaining all the different render effects would be cool. Or one depicting reflection or water techincques would be cool too. Probably a hundred others I can't think of at the moment. Think of them as in-game tutorial of sorts.

I think if an experienced/good map maker came up with a list of 10 cool examples to do, you could come up with a very cool, informative set of maps.

The only problem i can see is less and less people map for Goldsource anymore, so the time frame for projects like this is shrinking towards the time when there's almost noone left mapping for HL1.

(We've fried this thread pretty good though, so maybe if someone is serious, they should start a new thread or have the irrelevant/non-useful posts deleted.)
