Just saw a thread on the svencoop forums. Apparently some guy found out that there's a half-life command-line (-num_edicts x) that allows you to set the max amount of edicts and thus have a lot more entities. Just thought I'd spread the world since all mappers can benefit from this.

im not sure if this is for source, as i havent read the entire page.

[quote] Oh, and I checked out the ent data limit, and it turns out there really isn't one. VBsp is warning you that it's "full" because it's getting close to 384k, which was a size we considered a reasonable amount of ent data. Even though it uses 384k for reporting, it doesn't use that as a limit. It will go ahead and allocate as much memory as you need.

It's in the "HL Engine Discussion" forum, so it's not Source. Also, how can you not read the entire page when it's 3 posts, and 2 of them don't supply any new information?

Well , for this to work properly , valve should release a new version of hl1 . A tweaked hl1 , such as this edicts .
Not all the people know how to turn this feature on . And most of the hl gamers aren't mappers , and even as mappers - lots of them don't think about these things .

fortressfiles, the link you references is indeed refering to Source.
The standard goldsource limit is reached around 900 entities.

whats edicts?
Edicts are slots for entities .
They work just as player slots . For example : if you put the max number of player slots to 16 and the server is full , if a player comes he will automatically be kicked . The difference is that if you go over this maximum number of edicts your hl will crash .
Now, you don't have to think to edicts as a slot per entity . Just as in that forum says , a player needs 15 slots . A gun needs more than one slot . A monster needs more than one slot etc ....
