i made a map . two villas...but if i run it with vis the compilewindow stops responding after some time (i kept it on for 12 hrs) . but if i disable vis and comipile checking the only entities tab in the csg options
it compiles the map perfectly.and that within 5 minutes..I 'm surprised..
I know what VIS does then howz the map coming out good????.

oh. hammer gets stuck on long compiles. so use a batch compiler

Sometimes it gets stuck...If compiled maps that take +12 hours fine, but it uses too many resources on your PC so I suggest you grab yourself a Batch compiler like pepper said; or maybe even one of ZHLT's GUI setups (HLCC also works good).

Batch compiler sucks. I compiled a map the other day; fine, all done, all compiled, but one major thing, "WHERE THE GOD DMAN HELL DID IT PUT THE COMPILED MAP?" (Thats why I just use hammer to compile) :P

Maps should not take this long. They often do though: if poorly-designed, I'm afraid to say ;)

96a2107; That does generally not matter... Anything over 256 will suffice.

In other news, I have 2999Mhz with 1024 DDRam ;)

does using too many lights slow down the compiling....
Yes.

Batch compiling? Glossary!

One last thing - seven hours isn't long at all ;)

you can just make a batch compiler of your own.
in notepad:
type the directory if the hlcsg, bsp... etc...
then their parameters on the righ side

save the file as <filename>.bat
