Get your "employers" on here. I have something to say to them...
NO! Give your team a break. They've got wonderful models, great code, and beautiful maps. If you were to port all that to the source engine, it would be all that work wasted. Models would have to be COMPLETELY redone to match ragdoll physics and detail, facial animation, ect. the code would have to be redone as well, since source uses much more advanced AI, and the maps would have to be rescaled, retextured, re-detailed, have most of the details converted to models, and recompiled, JUST to get to source's standards. What you have here so far is a wonderful mod for it's engine. Put it to source, and it's almost as bad as HL:S was. Your team has worked hard and long to get such a good mod, give them a break. Save source for the next project, because ports are too much work just to make to standard, and it's wonderful the way it is.
TO RECAP: Goldsource version: Great. Source version: Would be bad at this stage in development. Team: Hard working and dedicated.

Of course there's nothing wrong with working on a Source version a few months after the release of the mod. If it builds up a decent sized fan base you could probably cobble together a team willing to work on a competitive Source conversion.

Well, yeah, but in this point in development, porting it to source would be a waste, it's better to start the source version from scratch instead of porting it and wasting all that nice work.

If you ported it, I'd have to wait a few years to play it, and you guys put a lot of effort into the goldsource version, porting it to source without changing it would make it terrible, and changing it would make all the previous efforts pretty much void. I can see we're on the same page here, and if your 'employers' disagree with you, just link them to here and they can learn for themselves how much time and effort would be wasted on a port.
Oh, yeah, and how is that beta version/demo coming along?

I wish I could help, but I'm busy with my mod, my internet sucks, ect. Look on the bright side: I'm working all alone, with the exeption of a few voice lines and a model hack done by the good people here! At least you have a team. Give it time, there's no need to finish it quickly.

I'm willing to help with some detailing and world props if you want, maybe fold might be willing to contribute some static props with his new-found milkshape skills too(you probably need skilled animators i know, but).

I'm sure many others would help to if you enticed them with caek.

his is bad, as it means more delays. I shall contact other members of the crew and see if they are willing to take his position, but if not....well this mods looking dead.
Why? Because of delays? If you loose a battle doesn't mean you also loose the war...

A mod is never truly dead until all the developers have given up all hope and destroyed all the source. Static Friction will be competed eventually, and I'll be waiting for it until then.

I don't really go for the Hgrunt's helmet, but at least the guns match and the goggles are additive. And the player was in the control room during the res cascade? how did he get out before freeman?

OK. I looked through all the screenshots, and I have to say, very impressive... I can tell there's a lot of new code in there, not just new models and maps.

The main use of the particle engine is probably the biggest, most obvious factor in the mod. A have managed to create some excellent particle scripts, one of which fills a room with smoke because the room is on fire...

Those models are actually NOT decompiled from Half-Life 2. Instead I got permission from another mod Arrangement by Sysop (big thanks to Sysop for alot of the help he has given me). I don't know where he got the models...but noone has said anything to him about using source models. As for the fast headcrab, it is decompiled, yes, but I modified it the legal 70% to make it not breach copyright. That was the law last time I checked. I made the legs thinner and longer, the body is paler and longer but thinner and animations are custom made.
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-15 01:32:07 UTC Post #265577
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but like 99% of the content Sysop used in his mod was ported HL2 and CSS content.
It's a miracle that nothing has happened to Arrangement, really.

It's a black or white issue-- you're either using ported content or you're not. It doesn't matter if you've changed it 70% or whatever.
If someone asked you to give them a handjob and you said "no", it wouldn't make it OK to rip your arm off and use it anyway on the basis that 70% has been removed.

And im out of action now...pain in the ass...i took my removable drive but the computers hate the bloody thing and the programs shit themselves if i try to run them. It makes no bloody sense...

OK, we have hit a major roadblock. Our maps were haphazardly constructed without any regard to r_speeds or the fact that it was being developed on a 10+ year old engine, and we have hit 0.5 FPS with a full VIS and RAD compile.
Fix'd, amirite?
Posted 15 years ago2009-06-20 23:39:47 UTC Post #268617
Oh. Irregardless, I've never had my FPS go down that much. My suggestion is to take into consideration the platform, and work within its boundaries. Half-Life can handle outdoor areas just fine, it just can't handle large amounts of detail at the same time.

Hey, I have his Fgrunt source code!
Also, make sure you use models for details when you have a plethora. Get that map running again!
EDIT: watched the trailer again. Release a demo for this thing soon!

Played a small section of Arrangement a while back and I was utterly disappointed. Sketchy level design, massive rendering issues and the ragdolls and other physics were all fake. >:(
monster_urby monster_urbyGoldsourcerer
Posted 15 years ago2009-06-21 18:49:46 UTC Post #268642
Of course it was fake ragdolls. The RPG grunt is terribly done, I have a copy of that model and code myself. Why simulate ragdolls when it looks much better to have a death animation compared to the fake ragdoll? Also, the bustwall animation on that model is a bit low, I doubt it would clear the bottom of the hole in HL.

Great! I hope that the demo is small enough for my connection to download in a few hours.
Also, when I say the RPG grunt was terribly done, I mean the default model and code from the package I assume you downloaded off rapidshare.

Less processes taking up resources, in theory it would be.

YAY DEMO!

It's a shame to hear about the roadblocks your having with goldsource's limits tho... There are always ways around GS limitations, but it get's tiresome sometimes making creative solutions and sacrifices to make it work... I love Goldsource, but i'm getting fed up with taking elaborate measures to achieve simple things with it nowadays... Source here i come.

oh btw how are the 64-bit tools working for you? I get no speed increase--as far as i've tested--on my vista 64, but maybe you have better luck with xp?

Unless they didn't decompile the models, that's not a excuse.

I honestly dont know...they have a pretty good modeller themselves so they may or may not have...we might not be using them anyway...it's hurting performance too much
