So, has anyone upgraded?

If so, what's your impression?

I am still using Chrome, and I don't plan to switch unless something more compelling comes along.

I didn't even know it was out. How come Firefox doesn't just install the major version updates automatically?

Edit: I downloaded it, and honestly cannot tell any difference except that links here on TWHL don't seem to respond as fast.

Why does it have to be different physically? 3.5 has some stability and memory use fixes, faster javascript engine, more HTML5 support, private browsing, etc etc. If every new version had to have a major, noticeable change, then it wouldn't be very user friendly, in terms of consistency.

Yeah, but Satchmo's question specifically concerned people's impressions of it, and how am I supposed to have an impression of upgraded HTML5 support within the first few hours/days/years of using it?

So, I guess that answers the original question. For me, there's really nothing compelling about this update. It still appears to hog memory like nobody's business and it hasn't crashed on me yet (the last version did all the time).

srry, FF 3.5 is pretty much the clear winner when it comes to memory usage. And while definitely not in wide usage yet, the things HTML 5 makes possible are quite compelling if you ask me.

I have been using Firefox 3.5 for months now, the beta versions that is.
I am writing a game using JavaScript, CSS and XHTML and it would be almost impossible to make without CSS transforms since I don't want to use HTML5-only elements (canvas) and would look ugly without boder-radius so the release of Firefox 3.5 means much to me, even tho you have to use moz.
Selectors API support is great, too.

Firefox annoys me...and Chrome's sleek appearance and genuine simplicity is good enough for me

EDIT: To clarify why, I find that Firefox tries to hard to to be everything it thinks you want. When in fact i'd rather have a simple browser that does nothing fancy and focuses on the task at hand, which is what 'I' want

I think you're confusing Firefox with Opera.

Can't be because I don't even know what the Opera browser looks like...never seen a picture of it let alone it in use.

It's red. Kinda looks like the Overstock.com "O"
I like firefox, i just like chrome better :)
It's the lazy-mans web browser. Minimizes typing.

In a head-to-head speed test, Chrome is the clear winner.

True, Firefox 3.5 may be the more efficient memory utilizer, but I don't really worry about memory usage when I have 8 GB in my system.

That's what i like to hear!
I don't really use all my ram either.

but i can't wait until i get Win 7 and my DDR3 ram...
Then i'm gonna need another motherboard because usb 3.0 is coming soon.
It's not even running half full speed, and it's 2x as fast as 2.0 already. :-P

That "Open a new tab" button is annoying.
Posted 14 years ago2009-07-01 14:42:20 UTC Post #269241
There's probably something like it for FF, but the magic wand is one of the bigger reasons why I stick to Opera. Though if Chrome would remember my damn passwords I'd probably switch to it.
Posted 14 years ago2009-07-01 14:47:51 UTC Post #269242
You gotta tell chrome to do it.
Options man. It remembers mine.

And..magic wand?

Elaborate..

It offers to save passwords, but it's bugged or simply not tied to the browser. When I log into the same website from a different browser, my password is wiped from Chrome.

The magic wand is an autofiller that Opera comes with, a lot like Roboform. You can specify different information like usernames, full names, phone numbers, passwords, etc. It can be used to quickly fill out forms or register on websites, but mostly it's just a more reliable method than FF's or Chrome's of storing passwords.

I've never had ANY trouble with Chrome and passwords.
I've only logged into TWHL once.

Also, for anyone complaining Chrome is too "lite" there is the option of addons in the next release. I believe the beta version currently supports a few at the moment.

What Chrome needs is an ad-blocking add-on.

Google won't build it as part of the browser because it's like shooting its own foot. Google's revenue depends on these ads.

http://www.adsweep.org/
Although ironically enough, at the top of the page is a big ad.
Posted 14 years ago2009-07-01 17:44:35 UTC Post #269254
It's just a gif that's hosted on their own website. Not really an ad.

Chrome does block basic pop-ups, which is good enough for me, a little notification appears counting how many in the bottom right corner. Chrome does save passwords but it has three options. One to save password, one to not now and one to never ask again. Check your options. And I think (I didn't bother to check) Chrome uses items in the cache for web pages so you don't reload everything every time you change page in a site (I'm not sure if this is right, I just read something somewhere, please correct me if i'm wrong)

To whoever likes Opera because of the wand tool, there's about a million Firefox add-ons that do the same thing (and probably better.)
I don't like the idea so I couldn't recommend one, but they're around.

But whatever. People will always have favourite browsers that work best for them.

Minefield is the name of the pre-alpha versions of Firefox.
Posted 14 years ago2009-07-02 07:50:11 UTC Post #269280
Sigh

Minefield is the codename for any nightly version of Firefox (as in, compiled from the daily source code changes). So, vs49688, you ARE using Firefox.
