I've been trying to make a skybox for a map I'm creating. I've done what I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to do, create a box around the map and hollow it, then choose your skybox in the map's properties. The only problem is when HL starts to load the map it freezes. Does anyone know what's wrong here, or how to fix it?

Creating a box and hollowing it is the worst way to skybox a map, purely because it adds extra strain on the engine. Think of it this way: rather than just your map being compiled and rendered, the engine also renders all those gaps under and around your map because it's simply contained in a box.

Think of a skybox as putting a cap, or a roof over your entire map, rather than boxing it. As well as that, did you texture the box with the sky texture?

Yes I textured it with "sky".

Are you certain you named it correctly? And are you sure the sky is the problem?

Yes It's name is cl_desert, that's a sky right? And yes I removed the sky and the map ran perfectly.

Yes It's name is cl_desert
That might be your problem. In the sky name field just put "desert".

DM. It's a recreation of a map from the game Metroid Prime Hunters.
