Got a higher resolution version of that picture?
yes
Why black?
The design looks best on black.

I would wear that shirt.

But even if I did somehow manage to win it in a contest, I'd feel a bit guilty about making you pay all that overseas shipping. And I don't have all that much money myself, either... :(

Archie, what was that joke about the coffee someone said in an InDev webcast thing ages ago? and I'd happily wear that t-shirt... just not in proximity to people

Wicked awesome shirt, Arch. I had the same idea with Overturn and possibly the development group itself.

So, this is just a highly revamped version of hl1? I've always wanted to do this type of mod, maybe I could do one part? Unless you guys want to do it all your selves. I'll do the dam! ;)

Nope, this is Black Mesa from another perspective, akin to Blue Shift and Opposing Force. All locations are new. The protagonist is an engineer, and you can get more details at our ModDB page.

I'd wear one of those shirts, would be pretty cool to support the mod.

Spent longer than I'd care to admit texturing the machine on the left. It's not even interactive, it's just a set-piece. The area around it is very WIP, so don't judge it yet.

Edit:

Incidentally, the texture set for it is prefixed "chigen" (Rchi Generator) so there's "chigenfront" and "chigenside", but there's a generic version of the red metal I used which is pleasingly titled "chigengen".

Wow, I wish I could do textures like that. I have Photoshop but never really got into it, as I don't know where to begin, what tool or which filter to use.

brain clearly fried this afternoon.

I was trying to work out what was so great about a shirt that read "we've reduced it to three eights of a map" that would make you want to wear one.

derp.

I had a dream last night in which The Core was finally released and I downloaded it in a cardboard box. It came with a nice thick paperback user guide. I also invited all TWHLers to play it in my house in the many computers I had.

Well I had a dream last night that touching a mixture of flour and water would allow you to teleport into any flour container in the world. I tried it with a bowl in my fridge, but it turned out to be pancake batter.

Double res version of a HL classic. This was pretty difficult to make and I'm still not totally happy with it. Needs a bit more tweaking I think.

Can you show us a tutorial on how to make that? It's inspirational. Since you already made a texturing tutorial, I don't think this would be hard.
I think it looks great.

Thanks, but I'm not sure what I could really say in another tutorial. I only used techniques mentioned in the one I already did.
Start by blocking out the basic shapes to a grid, all on separate layers, add colour layers, add tiling photo overlays, add detailing, shading and scratching and that's about it.

Really? Neat! Can you post it? I'd love to see the original.

[Edit]
I can kinda see it now. Rotated 90 degrees, and opening on hinges rather than pneumatics. Very creative.

Those two brown metal plates look kinda unnatural on your version, you might want to tweak the emboss levels on that. Or just remove them - the door totally works without them IMHO.

The best way to make flat yet hi-res and complex textures from zero like this is to model the structure, bake the shadows, normal mapping or whatever and take an orthographic shot and then draw on top
Posted 12 years ago2012-09-03 12:17:26 UTC Post #309598
if you were going through the trouble of modeling it, why not just use a model for the door?

I'd have to agree, that process would yield incredible textures, but its insanely time consuming.
