What does it mean, where did it come from?

Urby is an abbreviation of Urbanebula, a name I came up with when setting up my first email address.

It is a combination of the words Urban and Nebula, possible synonyms of City and Cloud respectively. A "city cloud" is basically smoke. So, in the grand scheme of things, Urby = Smoke.

(Some older members of TWHL may recall that many of my avatars featured clouds and skyscrapers.)

t was invented when I was but a wee little lad (6-8 years old) signing up for a MUD. (A Multi-User Dungeon.) I forget the name of it, but I remember it was because I wanted to stray away from the #1, Aardwolf. A MUD is a giant text-based multiplayer game, and it was as addictive as Hell.

And somewhere in the text, it said, "Art thou ready to disembark on thy journey?" I was thinking hard to come up with a name, and I took a close look at the word Disembark. Remove the s and the e and you've made yourself a crafty little name.

Mad, cow. Some of the first words I learned in English.
I was six, I thought it was funny. A few years later the mad cow disease peaked, hadn't heard of it before that. After that the alias Madcow became quite unoriginal. Nowadays I usually call myself JohnMartins, which more or less is my real name.

My cousins quake2 clan tag was [RUF] back in the day when i was around 5 years old. Never though about it until ruf3st came to mind, obviously influenced by the tag and i still use it from time to time. Years later I dropped the "3st" and added some e's later on, so it became rufee. A new "version" drops some extra letters and we get r f e

I had thought long and hard about what to make my name, I wanted it to signify something I was proud of. After some time, I decided on TJB, because it signifies that time President Roosevelt (the first one) awarded me the Trongressional Jedal of Bonour for saving the universe from the invasion of the Schnozzwangers from the Fifth Dimension.

But really, when I started out on the internet I didn't think of actually coming up with a name, I just used my initials.

Nowadays I use the name Alabastor Twob. I came up with that by thinking about what would make a good name. The word 'Alabastor' I got from this book, which I probably heard about from the Da Vinci Code. I thought the word sounded nice, so I used that. 'Twob' doesn't mean anything.

I thought I was cool hanging out on Habbo Hotel and it needed a username / password so I came up with the amusing Habboi instead of Habboy and then I just started using it everywhere else including TWHL where I spent many years posting and making a name for myself and I've kept it since.

On hl dm and cs I used to change my name to whetever I thought funny at the time. Then I would get to know players by their names, but they could not recognize me "before steam friends/ steam alone". So I had to come up with something unique. After a good while of thinking I came up with zeeba~G. It doesn't mean anything. I just liked the way it sounded and it was unique.

I changed it to zeeba-G because if you type tilda"~" on twhl in the name field it puts it really high, see for yourself.

Sometimes I change my name to other things depending on how i'm playing "really well or whatever" Some of these names have included; s4M4RaN4FgH4NIsT4N, Thias, Mighty Thias, crashman, sH4RpSho7DolPhiN. Two come from some of my favorite games, megaman2 (nes) and Super Metroid (snes). I used Thias because it sounded really beafy and it was in a deatmatch server for cs with longjump and hook shot included so I felt invincible. Crashman was also suitable for the server as the boss "Crashman" jumps around and throws sticky grenades down at you" in the server i'd hop around, stick to the wall and attack like a maniac".

-I like where you got your name from Urby, really cool. And I like where it is now. I also like yours Dimbark.

-Cstriker, I like yours but perhaps you could come up with an original one? lol.

-Rufee, yours reminds me of the date rape drug "ruffie"...

-I like Habboi, it sounds cool.

-Madcow makes me think of a madman, which is a good thing. Now do something crazy!

-TJB, i'd have considered my initials MEC, Albatros twab rolls off the tongue nicely.

Now if I want a change on cs or whatever, I simply add a little something to my name. I was playing with someone named [name]^coke so I canged mine to [zeeba-G]^h20. If i'm feeling the love I type it zeeba-G <3 etc...

Before I got into PC gaming I played Metroid Prime Hunters on the Nintendo DS almost every night with friends. On that I gave myself the name "Super-X" and other variations of that like "Nightmare-X" and "Omega-X" The first word in that name was always just a word I thought was cool. The X comes from the game Metroid Fusion, which was one of my favorite games and still is, where the 'X' were the main enemy. I took the 'X' from that name and used it X-LAyer2.

The layer2 is another story all together. Back in my days of only playing Nintendo systems my friend had bought Medal of Honor for the Gamecube. When playing spilt-screen you could customize your name but it would always default to "Player1-4" My friend was customizing his name and had only gotten the chance to change the 'P' in Player which he changed to 7. He then stuck with that name whenever he played '7layer2' was his official nickname at that time and in that game. I took the layer2 and turned it into X-Layer2.

The reason that the 'A' is capitalized is because whenever typing the name in somewhere I always made the type of holding shift for a bit too long and the 'A' would end up capitol, after a while I just stopped correcting that and it became part of the name, X-LAyer2.

So basically a combination of an enemy from Metroid, and a typo of Player2.

My original one, Darkie... I'm pretty sure I had literally no motivation for that one, I think I just thought it sounded cool back when I was new to TWHL/the internet.
Scotch comes from the fact that that actually is a nickname of mine. I did realise this conflicted a bit with Archie, but I'd been looking for a change from Darkie for quite a while. Nowadays any of my usernames are derived from Scotch, usually "Scotch22" (which I thought sounds like Catch-22) and "ScotchArtist" (no idea why, I'm not an artist).
My Steam username is nearly always Scotch, but recently I've had Zap Rowsdower (a major character from The Final Sacrifice, which I only know through Mystery Science Theatre 3000) and Skötchtoberfest (just because).

ShockMetal - the first incarnation.

When I just a wee lad on the intertubes I used to play a game in which it's name will not be mentioned, and I came up with an equally disgusting name to go along with it. Peter Gabriel has a song named "Shock the Monkey" in which I took the "Shock" from, and Coal Chamber did a cover of it in which they can be considered "Metal" or "Nu Metal" which is where I got the latter part of my name from.

Shox_The_Pwner - the second incarnation.

This one came along when I started using Steam after being coaxed to use it. Still an incredibly dumb and unoriginal name.

Joebama - the third incarnation.

This one is probably my most known handle as I really started to get into the communities of sites with it. Contrary to popular belief, I did not actually get my name off of Joe Biden and Barack Obama (the avatar was created after one person pointed that out to me, however.) I am a rather avid bowler, or at least I was. I noticed how the nickname or "slang" for a long period of bowling in consecutive games is called a "Bowl-o-rama" and infact, even some bowling alleys have this name. My name is also Joe. I wanted to merge these two without sounding rubbish, and thus "Joebama" was born after pondering the thought.

Suture - the fourth and current incarnation.

This name was conceived after a lengthy conversation in an IRC chat-room. I desperately needed a new name as "Joebama" was getting old to me and generally old to everyone else, and someone in said chat-room suggested I change my name to something that maybe would fit in with the community. I always thought the name "Stitch" was cool but obviously it's probably already taken. "Suture" was born because it's another word for stitch so yeah.

Hope you enjoyed this piece of history on the origins of my names. (There ARE other handles I used in the past [Baslo(c)k, xXx_MastaKilla_xXx or something along those lines, etc.] but, these names were used in such a small amount of time that they aren't even worth a whole back story on.

I only started signing up for communities and forums when I started mapping for and modding games. I had no clue what to use, so I went with my first name and a capital 'mod' because back then whenever I had seen someone use the term, it was always capitalized.

It was a crappy idea mixed with a short amount of time but by now it's used in so many places it's not really worth changing, especially when I still can't think of anything better. But hey, it's descriptive(ish) and not exactly common, so I guess it works.

Fun fact: when I signed up I was distraught to find out that there was already a "Blitzkrieg" registered. Then I saw that he had not logged in for a year. So I asked Pengy if I could have the name, and in one fell sweep Pengy whiped the old Blitzkrieg off of the face of the site and the name was mine.

Funner fact: I long ago grew tired of there being so many other Blitzkriegs out there and have since adopted the name Legitzkrieg, of which there are no others.

Fuckin' usernames boys eh?
Aright, take a wee seat an fuck up an listen to me, ken?
aye. that's wit a thought.

So my first username, as many people probably saw and pissed themselves at, was "Mr. Good Map". I have literally no idea what possessed me to make this blatantly not true name. I was about 9 or 8 at the time I came up with this, and used variations such as M1G1M1 for Habbo Hotel and the likes. Got the piss ripped out of me here for making such shit and terribly worded journals, as well as being unable to string together a sentence that actually made sense.

Some time passed, I started playing counter strike and the like online, and for shits and giggles put my name as "Kenco Koffee". It was ok for the time being, until I went onto one of those AWP servers. Every time someone got killed, some silly message would appear like "XXX got pulverized" and "XXX got turned into jello". Smartarse little me thought "ooh hoo, how hilarious would it be if i changed my name into "Instant Mix" so it would look like I got turned into jello! LOL xD omfg" etc etc. And the name stuck. Like, really stuck. I haven't found anyone else who goes by Instant Mix, I've seen some Instants and some Mixs but none together. It's a pretty unique name and I'm quite proud of it.

And yes lol Legitskrieg.

I like Instant Mix's story. I think there's a good bunch of gamers out there that have done stuff like that. I used the one "too much sex" like "pwnyou345 was killed by too much sex". At least in Zelda I've used names like "what" "dude" "you ass" and "Megatron".

If I may add mine guys, it's basically the word "Cabeza" ("head" in spanish). That's my nick IRL. If you remove the 'b' and change the 'C' for a 'K', you got "Kaeza".

It also has some relation to gaming. Whenever I played old console RPGs (Breath of Fire II for the SNES) which didn't allow more than a few chars for your name (4 actually), I had to come up with some name, since "Cabeza" did not fit, and neither did "Diego" (my real name). So I thought maybe "Kae", which also had some resemblance to "Kaede" (one of the characters in The Last Blade fighting series).

I use either "Kaeza", "kaeza", or "lkaezadl3" (read as "El Cabeza Del Tres", "The Head of the Three", the 3 for "3 Ombúes" my current neighborhood).

In case some of you are wondering, I'm from Uruguay.

EDIT:
PS: @Blitzkrieg LOL I love the look of Red/Gold/Whatever.
