Whenever I start up Hammer it starts with the window maximized. However, it is slightly moved down for some reason and hides the grid size, coordinates, zoom, etc on that small bottom bar. I can fix this by making it smaller, non-full screen and resizing it, but this detracts from the size available and I have a small monitor (1024x768) so I need all the space I can get. Any ideas/fixes?

I have had this problem before, but it seemed to stop after I started using 3.5... what version are you running?

Best way to fix this is burn your monitor... I will send you some matches if you want....

Try going into hammer and killing off all the windows. Then reintroduce them from the view menu.
Or try clicking on Autosize 4 views.

I'm using 3.5, Rileymo.

And Andy, I can take care of the matches, but will you send me a new monitor? ;)

Making the map window to it's mini-window form, then restarting Hammer like that solved it, no idea why.

Change the properties in the shortcut to "Start Maximized".

Ah great, thanks Seventh. Never knew about that, that should stop it from happening in the future.

Reminds me of something I experience sometimes: I start up Hammer just like usual, full-screen and such, but somehow the top of the Hammer window is about 50-100 pixels below the actual top of the screen. Actually this only happens when I have Windows Media Player running already. Not that it's happening everytime I have WMP running, just now and then.

After restarting Hammer a few times it's usually solved. Still, it's a bit strange...

Hammer has good taste. Use Winamp, the program that WMP tried to copy and failed abysmally at.

It depends on your display... i invested in an LCD screen for the sake of my eyes - now i can map all day without worrying about my sight giving way when i'm older :)
Fine, its a bit too sharp for its own good, but its a good buy for any mapper :P

THINK OF YOUR HEALTH!!

(its times like this i wish i was on a refferal program of some sort ;) )

Or perhaps a Specsavers advert.

Are LCDs better than TFTs?

I think it's the same.
TFT monitors work like LCD displays, for some reason they're called TFT though.
LCD = liquid cristal display (afaik)
TFT = thin film transistor

I like real monitors better though, they're just more flexible and sharper and faster ...

LCD monitors can be just as fast, but still a bit crappy on the quality and colours compared to real monitors - Work on LCD, play on the proper hardware :D

A TFT that is as fast as an average normal monitor costs way too much.
The only thing advantage is more space.
I don't like TFTs because they have a fixed resolution. This forces me to use this resolution, because lower resolutions are interpolated which unsharpens the image.

Very small for the things I want to do with my comp. If it works for you, great.

I want one of those giant Apple Studio or whatever theyre called displays. I have a CRT monitor...as Haz said, faster than LCD and TFT and it doesn't have that ugly blurring in fast-moving games I like to play, like Unreal or most FPSs for that matter. Mmm....Half-Life 2 on a huge screen with high resolution....Although it costs about 4000 bucks...
