Well, we all know not to release our first map. Don't we? :P

I was thinking, since I'm sure a lot of people have learned A LOT since their first map, that we should start recreating them. I would love to see a remake of people like Captain P's first map. In fact I would love to see his original first map, lol, first thing I'd do would be checking the r_speeds.

By recreating, I mean starting from scratch. Completely recreate it, using the knowledge you have now. Using good architecture and all the tricks you know how to do. I don't mean opening up your first maps rmf and just editing it a bit. I mean starting it again, using it as your base and just adding things and changing things that you now know.

Anyway, back onto recreating these maps, does anyone else think this is a good idea? I think it would be really cool to see these maps. I might start making it after finishing my compo entry and a single player map I am currently working on.

Hmm...sounds nice. I'm with you, I want to see how everyone's first map looked like. Maybe the next compo is to re-create your first map?

I can't recreate my first map. It was made completely out of water, and as a result didn't compile.

Lol. A map of water....

Your first map that isn't, well, crazy, that isnt 2 rooms a corridor and a monster. Your first serious map I suppose.

Oh, alright...does that mean I still have to have a scientist typing on a non-existent keyboard, sitting on a couch? Or can I make it properly?

I tried created my VERY first map, a large room with a glass walkway that goes through it. But because I didn't at that time understand how bad carving and hollowing is, and the fact that a hl room shouldnt be so big, It, today, would be full of fatal flaws.

But having said that it played suprisingly well and I cant seem to make that old magic appear again. :(

The whole idea of this is to remake it, making it properly. So Vassy, you have the scientist typing on a real keyboard. Thats the whole idea of this. When you made your first map, you didn't know not to carve, hollow etc. Now you know. Remaking it with all the things you know how to do now.

It'd be even better if you still had a copy of your first map. Then you could go back and edit that particular one instead.

Vassy: I remember that... you were complaining you fell out of the level ;) ah well, lot less noobish than some people...

...my very first non-tutorial map was a green hollowed cube with a pillar in the middle, for CS. I remember making a huge hollowed skybox and slapping in fifty barneys and twenty scientists and an Apache in one of my first HL maps, heheh.

lol, my first attempt at a map was one at my school. sucked.
I tried putting like 50-60 barneys in a row, facing about 250 zombies. (barneys won)

Nah, unfortunately it got lost or deleted years ago. I vaguely remember the general layout of it, it was cool at the time though. I have two screens of my first map that I actually managed to be able to use scripted sequences and so on: (I consider the map pretty old)

Just a corridor where you have to walk up to the window, walter see's you, say's "Just a minute, I'll let you in", and opens the door for you.

lol. Looking back everything seemed so blocky, I wonder why. Actually I was really proud of my achievements in this :) Anyway, you press the button and you get a trigger_camera view of a door opening you need to get through. Barney walks out of it immediately and you can see him walk all the way round, down another corridor and through some other door...

My first map was my school, and since the objective was to make the school (not a playable deathmatch map) the r_speeds jumped to 1800 or so wpoly. I'm pretty sure that's the way it was meant to be, since HL doesnt like big outdoor areas (you could see about 8 classrooms from the soccer field)
The scale and texturing could be very improved, of course, since back then I made doorways twice as tall as the player or something like that

LOL I can recreate my first map easyily. It was a massive steel box divided by loads of steel doors. The player is in a steel room behind unbreakable glass, theres ten buttons to press, each one opens a door.

You open the first door and thirty grunts meet thirty barney, the next door opens above and alien slaves fall in, and so on and so on until eventually all the doors are open bar the last lower one.

You open that and whatever is left falls into Itchy infested water. I had such a laugh looking at all the chaos. I was really surprise that about three barney survived until the bigmomma door opened lol.

I shall re create it now :D.

My fyrst map? A room a big box in the middle 1 working light shotgun, battery, healtkit and ammo boxes. And even a rpg. What can be done more? add more boxes? add 1 more light? textures were ok already =:D There is no sense in recreating THAT first map...
