I think we should stop talking about personal oppinions about others now.
It obviously doesn't add any value.
The current admins and mods will decide whether we need new mods and who will be asked to do the job.
We don't need another flame war.

Exactly. The best option would be to wait and see what happens. Take it as it comes people. Enough of this childish bickering.

Besides, arguing over who would be good for new mods just makes you sound silly and will probably not earn you a mod position.

Yes, their the only ones that really matter anyway. There was a poll script at one time? Then by all means it should be easy to give someone admin powers over it. Because then people can vote on things. I just got another idea, if we do the ranking system there could be a sub-admin only poll, to decide important issues.

but i was mapping long before that and im here alot now that i found this site.

/begin tail
well i was at the VERC you see and for some reason my computer kept crashing when i went there. so i went to google and looked for HL mapping pages. i eventually stummbled upon this little jewel called TWHL...

...so by now i have gotten second place in a compo and know more now then i did when i first came. even though i had been mapping for many years now there was always something new to learn...

...and that was how i ended up finding out about VERCs flaws and how baddly dial up does suck.which makes me think about a comic called ctrl-alt-del that has inspired...

...so now you no what happened to me in my short trip to germany where my cousin told me about cs and his clan which inspired me to map my first real map which i called...

im not ging to bother posting the rest of the story, it is very long and won't teach you much
end tail

Nonsense in this thread is acceptable, especially when someone is trying to get a point across.

Hey I want to be an Admin... where do I sign up..
Oh, I forgot I already was one? Doh!

Seriously,
We have discussed having more Moderators for the forums.
We are still undecided.

If I had to choose a new Forum Moderator from all the members, I could count the people I would consider on one hand (I have four fingers and a thumb!)

Those people are:

Always helpful,
Always provide Full answers with links to even the dumbest question.
Never post for the sake of posting.
Never abuse or flame anyone.
Always know what they are talking about and use common sense when problem solving.

Think about it people....

Sounds very RabidMonkey777ish to me. :D

Maybe making someone who doesnt always give nice answers a moderator will motivate them to do a good job. Or maybe not.

My 2 cents worth as a newbie:

This site has several attractions, some of which I can comment on only from a visitor's viewpoint.

Tutorials and other resources
I'm a noob with Hammer. This site is a godsend for a beginning mapper. I hope tutorials, both general and specific, will be well-moderated and well-maintained.

Maps

From the hip -> 90% of the comments are useless. "Awesome!" "Great!" "Good work!" - doesn't tell me whether it's worth the time to download and try out. I'm more interested in why a rating is given that what the rating is. I learned quickly whose comments were worth considering and whose weren't.

I'd suggest giving a recently uploaded map no rating at all. If it gets some responsible comments, each of which includes a star (or other) rating with it, then the more highly rated maps can go to vault consistent with their rating.

A responsible review may be required to comment on several categories: use of texturing, consistency of theme, playability, etc.

Good call there. It also doesnt help if you are the author of the map and you wish to know what to improve on.

And make it so you can only rate if you comment! Kind of Like SnarkPit, just a bit different.
Example:

Good Map!
Texturing: 5 Fun: 5 Architecture: 4 Gameplay: 3 Overall: 4

That way you know what to improve on, which in this case is architecture and gameplay.

And on the topic of the MV. I think screenshots must become compulsory. I hate opening up the MV and seeing 'No Screenshot' images everywhere. If they try to post a map with no screenshot, a message should come up; 'Error: No screenshot Included. Press F5 in game to take a screenshot, and it will be saved in your half-life folder as "mapname0000". Open it up in an Image editing program, and save it as a .jpeg file. Click here to go back.'.

Does anyone agree with me on any of these suggestions?

Amen brother.

As for commenting, it's up to a person himself how to comment. It's not a review after all. But I do agree with you some people have better comments than others. Personally I like such comment more as they provide a better feedback to the mapper. But then again, you can't demand such a thing...
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-05 03:06:47 UTC Post #48041
I understand what your saying, Captain P.
Texturing: 5 Fun: 5 Architecture: 4 Gameplay: 3 Overall: 4
But if you had that, you wouldnt need to make massive long comments, as the rating will speak for itself. So you could simply say 'I enjoyed playing this map' or 'Good work. Keep it up!' and then just give it a rating.

Screenshots are indeed an important part of presenting your level. A screenshot gives a first impression of the map and if that's a good one, people are more likely to download it.
So, from the mappers point of view, it's just necessary to give a screenshot. Some people however think different, but that's their problem. Their map just isn't going to get a lot of attention....

As for giving seperate area's of level design a rating, I like it. It provides a more in-depth sign to people that browse through the vault, and to the mapper himself. So, a different rating system actually.

Excellent point, Cap'n. Comments are not reviews, an invalid expectation on my part. Perhaps a moderator could give it a categorized rating review before it comes out of a "newly submitted" or "unrated" vault. I would also hope that a categorized rating could be submitted by anyone (or site member).

Just for grins, I did some quick counting of maps in the vault dated in the last two months. An average of 5/week in "unfinished" and 13/week in "completed." (I suspect that "completed" means "I'm done with it" ) Certainly doesn't seem excessive, although, if a person could only work at them once or twice a week, it might get a little heavy.

Getting rid of anonymous posts sounds good and all, but all its going to do is make people join, post like 3 things, and leave. I came to this site because of all its tutorials lol (Just a lil info).
Well I don't mean to nit-pick but if Pepper "left" (even though he didn't really), it doesn't show good admin characteristics.

I'm not sure that 'fun' is necessary. Maybe just three things, construction, layout, and overall. Then you put details in with the comments.

Definitely think that you should have to comment to be able to vote (but not vice-versa, since sometimes you will need to comment more than once on changes, advice, etc).

Good idea.

I like the idea of keeping it fairly simple. "Construction" covers the artists' and single-players' interests and "layout" addresses playability.

I've observed that SP maps, in general, have (and should have) more visual and interactive stuff -> construction.

Team maps need less visual stuff (excluding lighting which is more construction anyway) and higher layout scores. [I'm a TFC guy] Too much interactive stuff can detract from team play.

"Overall" can address the balance. A really well textured team map with no playability may drop the overall score below the average of the two first ratings. A well laidout SP map with no visual interest deserves a lower overall.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-06 13:02:19 UTC Post #48460
but for that you should need to play test it on a server!
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-06 15:49:13 UTC Post #48491
I think the catagories should Architexture, Detail, Layout, Lighting, Overall. Now this is getting complicated, but based on the rating (1-10) of those, if atom could devise some system (for the comp[uter to do) to automatically do a star rating (1-10).
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-06 16:02:37 UTC Post #48494
I think it's best to keep things simple.

I think Visuals (construction), Layout (gameplay) and Overall ratings pretty well cover it. In your comment, you can stress specific things you liked or disliked.

Nah, let's make it reeeally unfair. I say we add about seven new catagories. For instance:
  • percentage of submaterialist rationalism
  • percentage of internationality
  • percentage of constructive neotextuality
  • percentage of neodialectic sublimation
  • percentage of Lacanist obscurity
  • percentage of rubicon in cultural society
  • percentage of deconstructivism
Excellent idea.

Captain P
