I am debating wether I should delete all posts started by people who haven't logged in.
I am not talking about replies.. just initial posts.
What do you think?
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-23 01:06:34 UTC Post #53052
Like threads started by anonymous people?

Yeah, I agree. They need to be logged in... :x

Agreed.

I don't know, might seem unfair to people that spend ten minutes typing their post only to find out they forgot to log in and the thread got deleted.

Though I am all fot it.

On 10min posts, most people copy it to notepad in case something like that happens.

Most sites make it a requirement for posting to have an account.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-23 03:27:07 UTC Post #53077
Maybe, but how would people know why their posts were being deleted?

Perhaps edit their post to read, in italics, "Sorry, anonymous people aren't allowed to start threads; please register and repost"?

It'll just create hoardes of 'one login wonders' making idle accounts, and very little else difference.

True that, and it may discourage beginners who aren't sure whether they should join or not, despite the ease in doing so. Hell, I know I was...

If you could just STAMP every anon post that is asking a question answerable in the tutorials, then close it, that would solve the problems. But again, this might seem a little to harsh on total noobs. Maybe if there was an unwritten rule where the first person to reply to an easy question links it to the correct place and everyone else leaves it. Then only after the problem has been overcome by the noob (or there is no reply after a few days, indicating success/disinterest in responses in most cases) the thread is deleted. That way its polite, helpful and doesnt clog up the forums.

Or something. :P

Hmm... I agree with deleting anonymous posts...

But,

This should not apply to the general mapping questions forum.

It may be a good idea to be stricter, but not too much because that would ruin the community thing a bit.

When i first found TWHL i didn't create an account because i had no need for one, i just browsed around the tutorial comments - pity they had to go...
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-23 15:51:46 UTC Post #53268
I agree with requiring an account to post a topic in any forum. A serious mapper won't have a problem joining. Don't delete the posts, just don't allow them.
it may discourage beginners who aren't sure whether they should join or not
True enough. I hesitated to join with or without posting privileges. And I was sort of discouraged by some of the snide remarks (hint, hint ;) ). However, I felt an obligation to identify myself if I was going to take up space and time.
It'll just create hoardes of 'one login wonders'
Also a possibility. But there are currently over 1400 accounts and maybe a couple dozen active posters. Unless it's a server resource problem, creating an account seems to be a pretty small request for the info one can get.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-23 16:24:46 UTC Post #53281
i hesitated too, only because i thought the onliners box listed the current members of the site and that in some way i "wasnt allowed" to join. :D

if your going to stop them starting a thread, you should put up a message saying "sorry, but you must be a member to post threads outside the general mapping forum! please copy the message you made (written below), become a member and post again!
NOTE: please to not post off topic threads in the general mapping forum to avoid becoming a member!

then underneath would be the message they tried to post for them to copy.

Then again, do we really get enough anonymously-started threads in other forums to make it worthwhile?

Hullo again kol.

All valid points.
I mentioned deleting anon posts because that is about the only thing I can do...
I don't have the access to change the posting format.

I will leave it for now and see what happens.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 03:36:49 UTC Post #54416
It'll just create hoardes of 'one login wonders' making idle accounts, and very little else difference.
You could have several hundred thousand "one login wonders" before the server would see any stress. And the people who are serious would register.

The difference - The people looking for the "easy" answer, would have to decide between searching for the answer or registering and posting... a similar amount of energy to decide between, equalizing the now lop-sided "path of least resistance".

I wouldn't delete any posts, myself, because it's a history you can come back to. And it does not "punish" anonymous in any way, but punishes the forum admin by wasting his time manually deleting posts.

Perhaps you shouldn't delete current anonymous threads, but just block new anonymous threads.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 20:09:31 UTC Post #54665
There has been a rise of people coming in anonymous and posting and cussing like crazy I think some of them are actually members that have to much time on their hands.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-28 04:45:52 UTC Post #54721
I remember being a little reluctant to register at first because I'd seen so many bloody phpBB registrations and didn't want to wait for a stupid confirmation e-mail. Perhaps we should reassure registrants that it's not like that here.

Slightly off topic, and of course Andy's powers are useless against this one:

Anonymous Map Commenting only? Or more precisely, Listing the names of anyone who voted for a map in the vault and how many starts they give it. I'm sick of people with 10 5 star ratings and 2 downloads. It defeats the ENTIRE purpose of the map. Or maybe if you could only rate+comment at the same time.

It just bugging me that I have to wade through so many naff maps with fake ratings.

The VFI recommend that VUE victims stay away from mind-altering drugs as extensive research into the calibration with VUE symptoms is sufficiently lacking.

Following the offensive post last night I think its safe to say that just DELETING anonymous posts isnt enough.
Three solutions (at least while this carries on):

1. Stopping anon posting. (unfair to newcomers, makes the site seem unapproachable)

2. Show the IP of the poster (wouldnt be hard to get round)

3. Disable hotlinking. (I dont like it anyway being a grumpy dial-uper)

Something must be done ASAP.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-02 09:08:29 UTC Post #55909
No, you don't think you're a bird, you just think that you can be likened to the bird population.

The VUE also causes sufferers to speak in invented languages. The VFI scholars say there are a total of 92 VUE languages. Dreaming of water is not uncommon.

Mephs, I've e-mailed atom and asked him to either stop anonymous posting entirely (possibly only as a temporary solution) and to forbid them posting images. I'm also trying to get the logs.

Posted 20 years ago2004-09-03 09:49:34 UTC Post #56152
Err... This could all be solved just by begging Atom to get rid of anonymous posting. It wouldn't be that hard to do, I could see less than a days work to do that. BTW, Did you know that Atom made this WHOLE site in 3 days?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-03 10:10:13 UTC Post #56156

He's disabled image posting entirely, presumably temporarily.

NO ANONIM POSTS ALTOGETHZOR!

Good plan, most forums dont allow anonym posts as references to them are impossible.
