Just read the entire thread again:

From the top ;)
Nice to see TWHL growing with demand.

As for all the mod talk - Its pretty clear who are the "active" and contributing members at TWHL. So asking to be a MV mod is pretty useless unless you can argue your point well and live up to your promises.

I for one would like to say
"For the love of god don't make me moderate the Map vault!"
In its current State, it frightens me :(

I got Admin rights on IRC and that's enough power for me (for now :badass: )

The point is, everything will be sorted out in time ;)
Ill just go kill myself then.
Great to see some self moderation there ZL! ;)
I'd like to see more of that please!
I'm not sure that 'fun' is necessary.
If you were standing beside me I?d kill you!
And everyone else who disputes the element of FUN in a map.
joke

ABOVE ALL, Maps should be FUN
That's what hl mapping is about, Fun!

After some more thought user ratings are inevitable - so yes, a good idea.

Lastly, all of you mod wannabies, ask your self:

Am I reliable?
Am I mature in my decision making?
Will i put popularity above the "right" thing to do
Do I know what the "right" thing is??
Am I ready?
Will I work or will i just hang around?
Am I aware of the responsibility?

I at one stage wanted to start up a review board at TWHL, the more i think of it the more i realise how unprepared i was to take on the role.

Don't ask for something you can't handle.

Ingenious. If all our members are dead, there's no need for moderating at all. Genius, kol :)

Modding really ain't that interesting, it mostly consists of merging double-posts and un-anonymous-ing ones where the server's logged people out.

I understand that the poems, prayers, and promises of Valve have been a bit "iffy" this last year, but it seems HL2 is coming. I'm suggesting you make provisions for this now, so the templates are in place. Maybe have your most experienced members get some of the preliminary tutorials in place as soon as the SDK is released?
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 02:22:17 UTC Post #54398
That sounds like a great idea. Getting ready for HL2 is my top priority at the moment. Well maybe not right now...

Welcome back Kol 'Lord of the sensible comment, and mapping genius to boot'.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that nothing has changed?
But we are still growing...and those that threatened to move to other sites are still here? Or at least still dropping in and posting stuff.

I guess it is because there are very few sites around these day's that offer simple HL mapping and modding.
Before you decide to post about your frustration consider your position, after all, you log on in the first place and nobody forced you too.

I still think the greatest asset of this site is the people! Even though I believe what they want is outside my power... I still support them, until they forget why they came here.
[/semi rant]

Hurray for Brad; my opinions on the matter exactly. If we were one of the first around with decent tutorials for the new engine, we'd get a lotta publicity and stuff.

That is of course, good, right?

Our servers (Voodoo Death Clan) went to STEAM the day steam released. We had TONS of business... it's since died down now that WON has dissolved and everyone is peddling the same product, but if you can be first in the market, with a good product, consumer loyalty will maintain your (increased) marketshare. If you were to look at Handy Vandal's website, you'd have noticed that they have a HL2 Almanac... and they've had that ready since Valve's first HL2 press release.

Yes, it's good.

(PS. Ever read that guy's bio? If anyone knows website marketing, it's that guy.)

It's not just you. It seems the site hasn't changed, only the behaviour of the people. Wich is a good development I must say. Still, some site changes would make it all some easier to navigate and a bit more professional. Not really necessary, just... more comfortable... ;)

smart playing i must say. you shoudl write a book:

Great to see some wisdom emerging from the community, so celebrate! (i felt like writing)

I think the one thing that should be on top of the TODO list is:

As little external change as possible!
This site is great as it is, but inevitably it has lost some of that friendliness that you only get with a tiny community.

What we need to do is simple: Just keep the thing running and evolving internally, try to make the site as welcoming and as easy to use as possible, since we already have an adequate community.

If it aint broke don?t fix it!

TWHL GO GO GO!!!
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 15:03:22 UTC Post #54540
We're 'adequate'?
sniff Thats the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me before!
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 17:28:06 UTC Post #54613
Well, I know nothing is happening... But I think that Brad is a very smart person, if we are the first ones out with a HL2 site, with tutorials, maps, and people, we are going to be popular. The problem is, atom is a very busy person and are we going to be able to be the first? I wish that seventh was able to change the website, seventh, you know html right???
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 18:11:52 UTC Post #54631
lol, thats aot of faith to put in seventh. i thought he got the least power? being the freshie and all. heh. anyway im sure andy would be entrusted with such a task if atom didnt have time.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 19:49:11 UTC Post #54661
Thank you for the kinds words, David. It's not that I'm smart... I'm just trying to instigate a change that is forward-looking, not just a stagnant change.

I assure you, this is not intentional.

As for HL?, it seems that everybody's opinions are the same so far, Andy's and mine included: get there first, do it best.

Isn't it great when people come on to someones website, suggest the major things wrong with it, vvlunteer themselves as a mod, then ask where the hell atom is????

Nah, I guess the community moves in the shape of the box its put in, and a hl2 shaped box willl be noob central, regardless of the hl1 presige ppl think they hold

And yes Atom.....I AM available for weddiings, bar mitzvas, forum/channel moderation :D

..... jk

Maybe lateral change is a better term. Forward-change, not lateral change.

OK, theres 6 pages and to many posts to follow so this might have already been suggested... Get rid of the no screenshot options, dont let people upload it without a screenshot. Not have a screenshot makes me not download the map, because any map not having a screenshot is automatically labeled as "no-effort, or CRAP". It should be a requirement to have a screenshot or else you cannot upload it.
