ok basically im making a horror map and i want suggestions as to what a horror map should contain (obviously scary things) lol
oh and if u help with a really good suggestion then i will add ur name in creds

one more thing if your gonna reply plz dont submit a link to the horror tut as i hav read it before i want 'your' opinion plz

thanku and let the scare begin

p.s. im far to unexperienced to make a mod but i had sum ideas for when i am but that will be a long time literally so if any1 wants to use the ideas be my guest

one idea is that the game is based on the survival horror 'silent hill'
this game has got to be the scariest yet especially when i played a demo of the latest realease and man i turned it off when a woman goes in toilet and u follow u then see her more pale that a gohst wit blood all over her just frozen on a toilet! now thats disturbing!

thnx again cant wait for ur replies

well, personally, i like it when the lights go out as ur walking through a room. like, when i first played doom III, i almost crapped my pants. it was so scary and it was at night, all dark. walkin around, the lights go out. and 4 demons appear. so, mostly its the lights. but sounds can make it sweet too. i would rather be in the pitch black with no sounds than be in a well lit room with a scary sound. its freaky. but its your map, so w/e. gl tho.

oh, is this for hl?
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 15:58:33 UTC Post #54555
Haha! rabboi, im not a forum moderator, you dont HAVE to do anything i say, but its good you moved it.

Personally I like the idea of one main monster that kills lots of people but you never really SEE it. As in, you see grunts fly past you etc as if the monster did it, but you dont see the monster itself untill the end. (think of the first Alien movie. How many times did you actually SEE the alien in full view? and THAT was the scariest one!)

Not having a lot of ammo also adds to horror (a trick brilliantly used in the resi evil games).

Darkness is used an awful lot in horror, but you can make things just as (if not MORE) terrifying in good lighting, because you dont expect them! Good sound effects in the background and constantly keeping thev player thinking that there is something around the next corner (with trails of blood, scratches etc) are other brilliant ways.

Its probably MORE difficult to make a 3d game scary, since you cant push the plot along in the same way a film does, but horror in games is FAR worse! :)

mostof the ideas u lot hav said i used especially the dark bit wer u enter a light room and it goes pitch black and suddenly a zombie appears behind you and what makes that scary is that u came from that direction so u wouldnt expect a zombie from attacking from behind!

the thing that makes me laugh is that it triggers the music phsyco ;)

good point. it really depletes the horror of seeing a zombie with its face ripped off crawling towards you when you know you can just shout "haw, ye bastard!" and pump it full of shotgun pellets :
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 17:09:34 UTC Post #54591
well, sorta. while playing doomIII, when a demon would jump out, even tho i had god on, (cuz i suck) it still was hella scary
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 17:10:50 UTC Post #54593
hah, you suck. cheating is just another way of admitting you suck at games. shame on you! shame!
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-27 20:49:36 UTC Post #54677
well, sorta. i did beat the game already, then went back, put it on the hardest setting, and added cheats, just for fun ;)

i always beat the game first before i add the cheats. i look for easter eggs/secrets

but yes cheating is bad

Here are my suggestions of making a horror map:

-Lighting almost makes a horror map, you wouldn't want a map almost full bright, and see everything that comes out at your, dim the lights a little, maybe make some lights flickering etc.

-Make broken architecture, objects etc. dont make a place clean and tidy, and say it's spooky, make it look like people were getting attacked, put stains on the walls, blood decals on the wallsfloor etc.

-Make some backtracking, like if the player runs through a horde of zombie monsters, and gets to a locked door that says "Key Required", then the player has too get by the monsters again to go back and look for the key.

-Cutscenes at the beginning of a horror map wont hurt, like make the cutscene show some zombies eating people, walking down a hall, breaking a door, just to tell the player when he starts the map, that he's going to be scared.

They're just some suggestions. :)

Posted 20 years ago2004-08-28 09:04:38 UTC Post #54759
thankyou people for all your suggestions one of my scary bits on the horror map will contain a song from the silent hill series called 'The suicidal clock' and it certainly makes you tense and on your guard!

my idea to make a horror map came from a thread talking about a horror competition hosted by (forgot who was hosting comp but he has a site)

http://floater619.tripod.com/id17.html (lol guess its floaters site stupid me  )

anyway your suggestions are all very good but does any1 no how to make monsters like the zombie make noises like a moan (cause i hav a custom sound of a moan which would sound scary but im not so sure how to apply the sound or replace an old sound like idle1 for instance)

oh and floater thnx for tips but ur helping me a bit arnt u on ur comp lol

p.s keep up the good ideas cause every tip will be used and name will be in a hidden credit bit on a wall k! :D

please, try and type properly. Its doing my head in.

some good points floater, but i must disagree with the backtracking. If its used in excess its extremly annoying. for me anyway.

I think mephs idea of not actually seeing the monster adds suspense, which is great, because suspense and tension can cause the player to jump out there skin if something were to occour. I.e- sudden loud noises or movements.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-28 10:46:25 UTC Post #54796
exactly. i mean having zombies jump out at you is all well and good, but i remember a great part of doom 3 where your crawling through a corridor with loads of pipes and tuff hanging down. you turn the corner and see a monsters shadow, before it quickly jumps away. follow it and your led into a dark room, and as soon as you get into the middle, enemies start dropping from the roof and from behind obstacles. v nice effect. i know its not possible to have monster shadows, but oyu get the idea. just have the player walk down a corridor, and half way down have some sort of noise, something like pipes clanging or footsteps, just to let the player know theres evil about.

marvelous im getting good carma here (what ever that is) all these suggestions are great i especially like the shadow bit oh and do u think that having a room pitch black is annoying coz maybe i should make a little crystal lite down ther or sumthing not sure (ooo thats a point does any1 no how to put the model xen crystal onto a map so that its on a ceiling or on wall :D

KARMA. for the crysdtal use the "pitch, yaw, roll" field. for dark rooms, give them some light till the player walks in. then switch the lights off so theres very little visiblility. player turns flashlight on and is greeted by room full of zombies. :D

if you can, find some ther custom sounds. i was just playing doom3, and i was walking down the usual doom3 corridor (v dark with errie lights.) and i heard a woman whisper "cmon, hurry!". its psycological horror like that that really does the scaring. its not the monster thats scary, its how you present the monster. for instance. im walking down a corridor, and around the corner is a zombie. now are you going to put up big neon signs saying "zombie round this corner!" or are you going to hide the zombie in the shadows, and give errie effects to make the zombies appearance that much more frightening?

Theoritically custom sprites could be very good for horror. I've never tried it but I was thinking about the film the Exorcist, where if you look carefully, when the mother is walking through the house in darkness, you see faces and eyes appear for a few seconds in the black. With sprites in a game you could do this and make it most terrifying.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-29 09:10:58 UTC Post #55043
scene: the player walks down a quiet corridor in whereever youve set this. he walks round a corner, and hears a gentle crying noise. a little unnerved, the player continues on till he comes to a room, which is also the center of the noise. he opens the door to see a woman, kneeling on the floor crying (find a model for this). as he approaches, there is a flash, the woman disappears and the crying is replaced by an evil laughter. the lights go out, and monsters spawn around the room. a nice bit of psycological horror for ye.

yeah! ministeve has the best idea iv read here so far... i would crap my pants so fast with that... really.. creepy and evil... it shows just how BAD this big bad thing is.... thats a point. The ending is in my opinion the most important part. You need a boss... A big Big BIG evil thing that you maybe see glimpses of throughought the level and then right at a really REALLY un-expected moment (walking through a very brightly lit corridoor with nice walls and a comfy floor) the lights go out and you hear the classic MUAHAAHAHAHHAAH only mutated... The lights go back on and "whoomph" The walls are ripped and slimey Xen-ish and the lights are all flickery and dim and right at the end is this big big guy:badass:.... wow i wrote more than i thought... well i hope this is helpful. i got a bit carried away.

on the contrary uve all helped me and yes i was thinking of using a boss but ive read ther posts and letters etc and i quote ' if your making a good map then dont include the allboring as perusual boss as it ruins the game'

i got this from another thread so dont go complaining to me lol

keep them up i fixed bugs on horror as well cause of annoying lights and zombies that dont attack? weird

one thing puzzles me im trying to make it scary of course : but it isnt scary if you hear the flipping zombie as your walking into a empty room so how do i shut it up i put on gag but no luck?

so isnt ther an easier way or sumthing so it doesnt make sounds at all?

this is about an apparent "opening of hells gate". its probably not true, but the recorded sound at the bottom of the page would be v good for a scare.

Its a nice idea for a hl horror map, but half-life horror just wouldnt work, it could not scare you.
This may just be me, but i unfortunately was not scared playing doom3, and after playing half-life could tell where all scripted events are going to be and get ready for it.
As good a game as half-life is, it has so many scripted events, that in any other game i can tell where every thing is gonna happen, :(

Having the floor break is good to make the player jump, which is the best i think you can hope for, with half-life.
Also having the roof break above the player is good.
Posted 20 years ago2004-08-30 17:48:47 UTC Post #55344
Those are good gimmicks for the actual 'jump' but the build up is as important. Hell YES half life can terrify you (playing WITHOUT cheats). First person is VERY scary given the correct situation

more suggestions:

1. Graveyard type area, by a church, walk into the church see some coffins, go back out and zombies come up out of their graves (taken from They Hunger part .1)

2. Walking on a bridge and a zombie chasing after you, the bridge breaks and you fall into a horde of zombies waiting underneath the bridge. (my own :P)

3. look through a pane of glass and see a scientist getting atacked by a zombie, then the zombie throws the sci out the window and comes after you

PS: there are animations for the 3rd. Look in HLMV or VHE3.5b at the scientist entity properties. just make him run to the window, and perform a wind dive animation, use a multi-manager and make the glass break at the time he jumps through it, then make the zombie go through the broken glass and run towards the player
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-02 08:16:27 UTC Post #55901
Falling FROM the dark INTO a bright area (like the horror tut) is the best combo for floor breaking.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-02 11:35:24 UTC Post #55928
Here is some ideas:

1: Use the "Sharp Fear" track on your Half Life CD-ROM. Use Windows Media player to extract the track.
2: A cool feature could be the guy (or gal) having a flashback of what the day was before the incident (ie every one killed by zombies). If you saw Resident Evil the movie, when the main char (Alise?) she is trying to figure out were the anti-virus is, you see the scientists fading in like gohsts, and then she sees the poeple testin the virus on a rabbit.
3: Make the level SILENT!!!! If you ever played Silent Hill 2, the silence would freak people out.
4: Make it disturbing. Make the player "Feel" like he is in danger.

here is one of my favs:

You look through a window and all of asudden a sci jumps out (as this happens use music that would suprise the player) he is pleading for you to get him out, bangging on the glass, the something crushes his face against the glass and blood is everywere.

-Resident Evil: Code Veronic

They hunger was a fun mod. But the fact that the gjuy became half cyborg was kind cheap. I loved the ending though, I felt like YES Im outta this shit hole!

although "you are what i eat" was a bit of a letdown. i mean even a synthesized drum beat would be better than that godawful rhyme scheme.
