Since HL2 is nigh, and im guessing that hammer and such wont be updated for hl1... is it now time to update the tutorials once and for all?

As hl1 shall diminish, there will probably be less hl1 mappers newbies, and I suppose that the tutorials will be there more for posterity and quick reference.

So, on the eve of hl2 i propose that the tutorials are brought up to speed.

Basically these points need to be addressed:

How to set up the newer hammer so that you can view models
How to set up the hammer with steam.

also while im on the point, the environment tutorial mentions a lot about skyboxing and then simpy says 'dont do it, its rubbish' at the end. Mentioning how you can put patches of sky just outside windows etc would be helpful to beginners.

Anyone else know of anything that needs a good updating? (its probably the last call :( )

:( i might still map for hl but its more likely that the majority here will map for hl2 or css coz its like mapping a new game if u no wat i mean

there will probably be less hl1 mappers
*Fewer ;)

Havta see what Andy reckons, although NinjaGrinch wrote a good tutorial on Hammer + Steam (Google for it).

Most of the tutorials will work for HL2 as well, but they should be updated to more effecient ways of doing the tutorial (Entity set-up wise)
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-13 00:26:07 UTC Post #58815
That could be added...I think it would be good to leave both teh HL1 and HL2 instructions on the page, however.

cudnt u hav 2 links to hl and hl2 or sumting or even a whole new site lol

ok im crazy

wat im saying is that well i still luv hl coz of the great action it brought and well the cool train sequence now unless hl2 has an even cooler train bit at beggining then i will ditch hl mapping 4 good

bit of a shame rlly as loads of people hav worked hard on a hl map for sum time and a lot of people will rlly only play hl2 or css

also ther will always be a majority of people on hl or cs coz a lot of people like retro old games but i consider hl a god of sum sort and it must never burn out! :D

I agree with rabid, keep hl1 tutorials on here, and also have hl2 ones and label them for hl2.

And habboi i almost liked you then, apart from:
unless hl2 has an even cooler train bit at beggining then i will ditch hl mapping 4 good

To do quotes you type [quote]text[ /quote] but without the space.
Also the question mark next to the emoticons tells you how to do everything.

I think you are onto a good thing Mephs.
I expect to see your revisions of the tutorials before the end of the month.
I would appreciate it if you also updated all the tutorials and added a section at the bottom for Hammer 3.5 specific information, and Steam users.
Thanks for volunteering to do this, as I am a bit busy at the moment archiving everything onto RUST

Hey! I never said that *I* would do it lol. I'd need help with the setting up for steam, since I have self-imposed steam embargo but hey, why not?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-14 07:31:36 UTC Post #59228
Bah, I'll bite the bullet and set up steam tonight, if only to get the screenshots.

Steam (setting up hammer, running maps through steam etc)
Hammer (Viewing models, multiple cameras, and the roll (not working right) bit.)

Can anyone think of anything else different?

I can probably do some revision, but can't d all as when HL2 rolls around I'll be extremely busy. Mod maps, test maps, HL2 gaming...lots of stuff to do.

The minute hl2 comes out I am going to make like 5 tutorials on how to do all the new stuff in it- I have actually started looking at the leak version and am writing basic stuff. When the actual Hammer 4 comes out I am going to polish them up and submit them to Andy. You guys should see the list of entity's making an entity guide would take years.

I am really worried about TWHL with this site. Seriously, I honestly don't think that it is going to be updated at all. Look what happened with the todo, billions of ideas and whats happened since then? Nothing.

We should keep the original tuts., and have some HL2 tuts. as well, since some people will need to update their computers, and this may take a while with those who have stubborn parents hint hint me.

I think TWHL should stay HL1 - i don't think i can bare any more members here... I'm fadin' away ........................
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-19 06:58:41 UTC Post #60606
Bear - 'bare' implies you exposing yourself. We don't want that few members ;)

If we stay solely HL1 then we'll pretty much die.

Maybe somebody else interested in PHP, etc, might start a TWHL?...

I guess this could be the time to announce that m0p and I have already started on a site called HL2X. You will sure hear about when its done. Right now I have my testing version on my website, no where near finished. But I am hoping that THWL members will go there who want hl2 stuff.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-19 14:23:28 UTC Post #60680
Bear in mind that Hammer 4 should have excellent reference material with it, so tutorials aren't going to be as vital (presumably).

Personally, as you all know, im in no hurry to get hl2, what with my crappy computer situation, but i feel that doing NOTHING when hl2 comes along is just being lazy (no offence since this is atoms site and his decision.). If it were to be some kind of retro homage to a by-gone age then fair enough, but NOTHING implies letting things stagnate, which currently seems the case, looking at the site.

The TODO list of atom's seems to have been a pipe dream, with no chance of ever being implimented. Some members have reverted to their spammy, idiotic states and the moderators are fairly powerless to do anything about it (in fact, it seems that Seventh-monkey alone is having to hold the fort all by himself).

I really DON'T want TWHL to stagnate, as it is a damn good community, which has taught me everything i know about mapping, and you are, with very few exceptions good guys. I am very, very greatful to you all, and spend most of my work day, and when i am home either at the site or in IRC with you all.

I just hope that Atom's 'nothing' approach only concerns hl2, as opposed to the site itself which seems to be the case.

Thanks for the compliment Rad Brad...
Funny you should say that, as I was once accused of lacking leadership and sent a full page description of how to be a good leader!
The guy that sent it dissapeared?
I really should send it back to him, after all, it was his thoughts on leadership that were going to produce a Brilliant Mod. Urhemm, Cough ;)

Enough of my petty whinging :-)

TWHL will stay TWHL.
As far as I am aware there are no current plans to update the site to contain HL2 content. The only person that can make changes to the way the site is run... is Atom.

And yes, the Spammers are back. Sad really, but it is our popularity that brings them like moths to a light.
Unless you guy's highlight this to Atom, then there is very little we can do, but monitor the posts and delete what we can.

Either way, you all deserve a pat on the back for loyalty...
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-22 08:59:03 UTC Post #61124
Ouch! Don't pat me too hard Andy, it hurt. :P . I suppose now that I have been patted on the back like a dog, I shall now get myself a bone.

mmm.... bone.

I suppose we could kinda make some type of HL2 map vault and a couple tutorials. Couldn't be that hard could it?

TWHL staying the same could have 2 effects:

1 - we dont get any new members (which personally I wouldn't mind, seeing as it would mean no new spammers)
2 - the website will then become a pool of regulars, which is good in itself, but with noone asking 'stupid' beginner questions, the existing spammers will overrun the site, consuming all.

The best possible outcome would be, no new idiots, and the current select few morons go bother another site.
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-22 09:33:13 UTC Post #61133
...and, in my opinion,

3 - half the regulars leaving when they go off to work on HL?

err....anyways...
Actually, sorry people but I'm also now too 'busy' to do this. I'm sure that TWHL will survive without it.
That was me being a big baby. I took the huffs because I obviously misinterpreted Andy in IRC talking about "nothing" being done to the site post hl2. I was already infuriated by the constant mind numbing spamming on the site, and saw doing nothing for hl2 as doing nothing for the site. Looking at the index page, I see that this is obviously not the case. Contented now that affirmitive action will be taken I will also 'pull the finger out' so to speak.

Concerning the spamming on IRC. I'm also one of the more idiotic on the channel, but as a rule stop as soon as someone new joins the channel, or a question is asked. When there are no questions being asked, I tend to use the channel as a hang out area, talking crap as usual.

So I would like to apologise again for being so childish, and (god willing) will start work on updating the tutorials as promised (though with my huffing, I'll probably not have it done by the end of the month, sorry Andy) ;)
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-23 21:26:26 UTC Post #61547
I don't get how "busy" atom is. Now I understand that he may have a full time job and all, but doing a few updates couldn't be that hard. The most he has done for this site in the 3/4 year I have been here is that he got everyones hopes up with the ToDo. I really don't want to see TWHL not do anything when half life 2 comes out. Like other people I too learned everything about mapping here, and sheesh, I come here practically every day to browse around the forums & stuff.

Ah ha, maybe I have a solution to this. m0p is an excelent coder, maybe he could make some php code updates, email them to atom, and all atom would have to do was to post them into his site! Maybe...
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-24 04:00:52 UTC Post #61592
I think you may have all missed the point.
Atom created TWHL to test his website building skills and php coding abilities.
It was an experiment to see if he could create a site.
When I joined in 2002 there were 13 members.
A year later there were 300, and now there are 1500 or so.

Obviously his intital design has come a long way and attracted a community of loyal followers (YOU).
But you have to understand that TWHL is just a test bed for atom's ideas. He found a game he admired and made a site based on that game. He does what he can, but there have been spin off's from TWHL that are now taking time to run...That is the way I see it.

He pay's for the hosting, He get's the final say.

Ohh, Meths..
I wouldn't worry about the updates, there really isn't a need. Most of the differences have been posted in the forums. I would happily let you do it, except it won't make much difference.
I added updates to about 20 tutorials based on the most common forum questions....
That did not stop people asking the same stuff.
Personally I think we have too many tutorials... overwhelming the new member and not making the most important aspects of mapping clear.

So it is up to you wether you want to do it.
It took me a month and a half to update 20... are you willing to continue even when HL2 comes out?
Posted 20 years ago2004-09-24 08:44:54 UTC Post #61625
