I had meant to keep this map a secret considering the whole de_full_city incedant but I have to show this one screen of yet another city map I am making. This isn't a Counter Strike map, it started as one but I changed it later. I'll change the map name later too. Some of you might recognize the screenshot from the old "gaining skills" thread. So... uhhh.. yeah. Here's winter_city(or part of it):

Holy stink! Winter City got an upgrade from its previous cs_winter_city map! New wads, new sky, new sounds. No matter what impression you get from the screenshot though this is not a ghetto city.
R_speeds aren't too high, around 1000 but I couldn't get them any lower. Get over it, I don't want to hear the words "high r_speeds" in this thread.

Needs better lighting, IMO. Do what m0p said as well. Lookin' alright though, but it does need more "wow!" as jaardsi said.

It looks good to me, although you need to add more little things. I like the bench, and the fountain, but it needs more details. This is your "first wash" of this painting (Metaphor). Some cool lighting effects would really add a lot.

With recent spam outbursts, why wouldnt you.

Might I suggest you have a flag in front of that building? It looks good though. Maybe get some car prefabs and stuff. Also for that fountain, make the flowing down part the... well its an flowing downwards texture.... looks alot better. And for the fountain water you could make a teal colored texture and use that as the water, IMO it would look better.

Those are all just suggestions :)

It does have more lighting, me being me, I am building so that you can go into most of the buildings which will as tons of lights to the map. If you're looking beter outside lighting, keep reading. But it isnt a night map. The fountain is a converted texture called scroll_water2. So it does flow. Lighting? I'm working on it. For some strange reason the light_environment will not get any brighter than a gray but the tops of the buildings are all normal brightness. I've tried setting the light to face down but to no prevail so if anyone has any help for me please do tell. Wow this is a long post. Thank you all for not spamming about r_speeds. behind me in the screenshot in the train station and the train tracks. Get this, I am putting in many original ad billboards and behind the train tracks is a big building with a myg0t sign on it. Just for laughs.

i think you need a new water texture, that is just a halflife water texture you renamed to scroll_water. a tex doesn't need scroll in teh name to actually scroll. and try making the fountain with a bit more flair.

I just spent 20 minutes trying to get you a pic, but teh only example is linked in with about 15 other pics, so i'm not going to post it, but you should have teh water come out a little, then go down.

also, I have some excellent streetlight models you can use, to keep teh [u][i]r_speeds[/u][/i] down (lol)
plus i got a load of good city type models.

if this map isn't for cs then what is it for?

remember too many entrances/exits and buildings makes for long gameplay (unless it's a deathmatch mod)

I have a great water texture too.

think about putting a few thigns on top of the rooves, like arials (spellcheck =/) and antennas, possibly experiment with a few smaller buildings on top and behind teh existing ones, to give a feeling of depth.

you need telephone poles ( i got some good models of those too) and teh cables going into teh buildings.

and don't f**k it up by putting myg0t music or pictures in tehre. if you do i will... well, there's not alot i can threaten you with, but i will in fact eat your brains.

myg0t are f**king pathetic, anyone who respects or advertises them should be castrated

TWHL all teh way, unless the map sucks, then kindly remove all blasphemous evidence

Scrollig textures need scroll before it according to the tutorial plus I experimented with non scroll textures and the conveyor wirks but the textur didnt move at all.
I don't have telephone poles, what are you smoking?

Actually I just have a condition that means my fingers move faster than my eyes, so I hit the wrong key, i type : they, as tehy, for teh same reason, and there's many otehr words I cannot type properly, so please don't poke fun at my affliction. And just reading back through taht I have noticed 3 more errors, and they weren't on purpose. I got "they" right taht time, muahaha, sh*t, I f**ked up "that" though. lol

And about telephone poles, what are you on about you don't have any, and it's halflife. I said I have a load of models that I will send to you so taht you can use them and keep r_speeds down. And give teh map more detail.

WCD, heres a tip. When making realistic stairs, pavements, or bits that generally are slighlty above the ground, never size them to 16 units, even though the half-life stair textures are at that size, dont. The reason I say that is because it can look very ugly and bulky, and not many cities tend to look like that. Always use at least 8 units instead. Looks alot more sleak, stylish and adds that 'I-know-what-I'm-doing' element to your maps.

Also, try to avoid just using plain ol' big blocks as buildings. Add interesting detail, like ledges, columns (if necessary), steps leading down below the pavement to a locked door, maybe even some roof detail. OK, the r_speeds may increase, only if you go over the top.

Also, when making stairs (8 units as advised) it is a good idea to make a ramp textured with clip so taht the player walks down smoothly and doesn't have teh annoying "stair jump" phenomenon, where the player walks down stairs, constantly having to adjust their crosshair. most annoying.

Id rather have one texture to conserve space. Please show me a picture of my "telephone poles" please. Whats al this about stairs? I never said I have stars and I don't plan to have anystatirs in this map. What brought them up?

someone else brought up stairs, i was just giving my point of view about "stair-hopping", i think tehy were talking about the chunky "steps" and pavements etc, a 16 unit high step is too high to look good, it's just a fact.

and about the water, so what if it's 7 textures instead of 1? It looks a f**k sight better than halflife water (that's not an insult, merely another fact), so just give it a try and you'll be surprised at how much it helps your poly's in teh long run. If you make it so that teh player cannot reach teh fountain you could have solid brushes saving on e poly if you needed to, it's all there for you to experiment with.

And omfg, teh telephone poles, there's a reason why |I mentioned them, teh same reason you're getting pissed off, because you don't have any...
show me a city taht doesn't have wires and poles all over teh place, ven calcutta has taht sh*t, it's basic city infrastructure.

So I said I had some models taht you could use, because you said your w poly was already high.

you mean his fountain, i think he shld use teh one from havana, that's a great rustic fountain tex.
