Last night I started downloading the Doom 3 demo and it took a long time, I had to wake up in the middle of the night to finish the download and turn the noisy computer off.

Thios morning, I was thrilled to think that I can now atleast see what Doom 3 is like. I installed it, it slowly got all the way on the progress bar to 100%, and then it tells me it cannot open the specific .ini file.

I tried to open Doom 3 and it could not. It turns out you need Windows f*cking XP/2000 to run it! It didnt say that on the download site, and because I thought it would be fine, I didnt read any in depth info on system requirements. That really pissed me off to think that I wasted my time in false hopes.

I found a forum explaining how to hack doom 3 with hex to run on windows 98, but that proceedure doesnt work with the demo version.

Because I was so pissed off, I found myself installing Doom 95 just to remind me of those good ol' days. Only trouble is you cant run custom files cause its shareware so you cant map or change the music to the original psx music, instead its that horrible midi stuff.

...And there are limitations too, like no pulse rifle or bfg, and only one set of missions.

Think how I felt when I d/l AA, 728mb's, that's 4 times the size of Steam with CS and HL, only to find that I couldn't play online because I didn't have teh authorization from XP's security update blah, and that my gfx card is so damn crap that I have to play it on Ultra-Low everything.

So I fixed the online thing and I can play, but I still have a crappy PC...

Why does it suck? Because it's too much like farcry or HL2?

I think it looks liek a really good game, but I hated teh originals... yeah yeah they were one of the first, but sh*t, don't mean I gotta like 'em

Still, I would have liked to of played Doom 3 for myself to see what it was like instead of pissing some money down the drain.

Besides, there isnt that much of a point in buying ANY new game when HL2 is out. I'll mainly be focusing on that.

Doom3.
Guns = Suck
'plot' = Suckie
Graphics = Great but not THAT great
Physics = Suckie

But.. whatever. Test it.
Why does it suck? Because it's too much like farcry or HL2?
Doom3 vs. Far Cry = Doom3 0 - FarCry 1000. Doom3 vs. HL = Doom3 0 - HL 1000000.

Doom3 rocks and people who hate it have shitty computers or are scared of it's superiority.

lol

Yeha, it looks liek a great game, people can be too biased, those guys spent years making that engine and that game at least give it a frickin' chance, I'll bet that game lives on as a cult classic!

Do you gusy liek Unreal? I swear their engine pwnz0rz HL, HL2 will give it a kick in teh ass though...

I like Unreal Tournament. I have UT2003, but I lost the fricking manual which has the cd key! Argh!

As for UT2004,looks excellent, vehicles an' all, but, my attention will mainly be focused on HL2

any of you have seen the next gen engine planned to be released in 2006?? its already far ahead of hl2 and doom 3. its based on the unreal series.

Wouldnt suprise me. However, I will never betray ye olde faithfull Half-life. The more superior the Unreal engine gets, the harder UnrealEd is to use.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-21 14:16:07 UTC Post #68173
Someone mentioned the Unreal 3 engine?

Yeah, far ahead of the Source and Doom3 engine, but you don't want to know the system specs... they're pretty harsh...

And besides that, I don't like UnrealEd. Pretty hard editor if you ask me...

So my focus will be on getting to work with the Source engine. Better a decent engine that's fun to map for, than an uber engine that's not fun at all. :)

I remember having read something like that, too. Nah, we'll see... :)

UnrealEd may be hard, but I personally love that engine, sure the specs are wallet destroying but hey, that's the price you pay for the best of the best.

Source will be the best around for a long time though, I can't see too many people suddenly switching to Unreal to mod, when VALVe have made it as easy as possible to switch over the Source, I read an article, probably on VERC or SteamPowered taht they've designed it with the community in mind. They've learnt from all teh things that people have been able to do with HL1 engine, and have made an effort to have everythign as accesable (spelling) as possible.

Big thumbs up to VALVe for that tbh.

It almost makes up for taking 7 years to release teh sequel.

[edit: at this time, Unreal pwnz HL's engine, and any other imho]

UN3 engine does look cool but after all it is the game that counts, and all the unreal games have been shite. Doom 3 has pretty graphics and scary atmosphere but it is nothing compared to what Hl2 is hyped up to be.
