Ok, you have a month...
All questions in this thread.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 07:37:50 UTC Post #67514
Andy and I have discussed a few points:

-ABSOLUTELY NO "My house" or "My bedroom" entries. Or anyone elses house for that matter, unless it is somewhere famous or something.

-You can have more than one reference picture, just be sure to include them all when you upload.

-You can do anything in terms of gameplay. You can add monsters, cameras, or whatever you wish. It would however be better if there was a reason for the monsters being there. Entries with monsters for a reason will get extra points (for me, dunno about Andy) than entries with monsters in there for nothing.

-Feel free to email me with any questions about the compo. Or just ask in here. :)

Now Andy, would people be able to have paintings as a reference pic? Just interested.

Also good to see Atom putting page numbers at the bottom. There's the proof that he actually does care for us. :)

Have fun!

There's always different things to help get around the engine. If you use cameras, scaling everything down will help r_speeds DRASTICALLY.

Look forward to judging all of your entries, especially yours Captain P. That is if you finish of course. :)

Right, well, is there any limits on this at all?

I'm looking forward to this, it'll be the first comp I enter, and it sounds quite suited to my abilities ! =)

am i allowd to make it a mod for half-life, because it will get tons of costum textures and models etc. am i allowed to do this ore does it have to run from the console.
and should it start in normal won hl ore steam hl.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-19 09:45:37 UTC Post #67588
I don't think it matters, you just need to state what medium you want your map to be played in. The judges should have WON, or someone should at least, but imho Steam should become compulsory due to HL2's iminent release.

And it helps to package all your files into a minimod if you have custom texes, sounds, sprites, models, whatnot.

Can I use my own photography as reference images?

Wow, you completely stuffed that up Ant. ;)

Your own photography will be fine. In fact it would give you an edge over other people since you know the area, so you know what to map where the reference picture doesn't show.

I really hope you do start Cap'n P. You have started in all the other compos since I've been here, and I have enjoyed both of the ones you actually sent in. So you better make one for this one, even if it unfinished. ;)

Great to see such a positive response about the compo.

I will have an example map in the Example Vault very soon, to help any idiots that don't know what they are doing.

For inspiration, I recommend:

www.google.com [images]

Get mapping!

Huh? Cool site?

Thanks for that Haz. I respect your opinion quite a bit, and it's good to see you like the compo.

I would like people who are planning on entering to say so, and if you have ANYTHING you have a query about which concerns the compo, just ask.

Good to see experienced mappers want to challenge themselves with this compo, which was exactly what I wanted.

40 reference pics does seem a bit extreme though. :)

Like I said, this is a first for em, it seems alot of mappers like this idea, it appeals to our core insticts =P

Are we allowed to go nuts? a big area, like, how good is your pc, I can handle 1500 w poly quite easily...

My pc sucks and so does my video card, but don't let that stop you going all out. This isn't an r_speeds compo.

its quite a big building, i had to cycle aroudn it to take the pictures, and i took pictures of detaisl like windows, tiles and other atributes, so i can make a texture of it.

i just did a test wiht the first textures. it looks great. almost the same as in real life.

To what extent will the playability of the map be judged?

I'm tempted to enter with my actual place of work but I'd like to have an idea on how much effort to put into the layout and textures, versus features that would make it more playable (monsters, scientists, etc.).
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-20 09:11:38 UTC Post #67888
I was thinking that, I don't think we should be judged down for not using monsters, but someone that can use a monster in a good place, in a new way deserves to be recognised for that. So I would say, no monsters, what does an alien grunt have to do with where you work.

To be succesful, I'd imagine using things that people can use in your map, like set up soem fun sequences that happen along the way. To keep the focus on the map as a whole, not jsut yoru architecture.

if you're using steam, you have to load the map by opening the console (left of 1, above TAB) and typing map mymapname

No, I am not admin.
Yes, I am judging.
I was thinking that, I don't think we should be judged down for not using monsters, but someone that can use a monster in a good place, in a new way deserves to be recognised for that. So I would say, no monsters, what does an alien grunt have to do with where you work.
Exactly right... You will not be judged down for not using monsters. If there is however monsters implemented in a new or creative way, then it will be recognised.
To be succesful, I'd imagine using things that people can use in your map, like set up soem fun sequences that happen along the way. To keep the focus on the map as a whole, not jsut yoru architecture.
Once again, you are correct. Maybe some special effects or something similar. Just something to keep the map entertaining.

Hope this clears things up for you people. :)

Why would you want to know anyway? You need an account to enter, so unless you start showing your face with an account, you can't enter anyway.
