Error... wtf?

So I double click Source SDK, yanno, getting ready to whip out some handy dandy Hammer and make some big gay map because I can't map for shit.

ANYWAY, so I get this error:
MountFilesystem( 221 ) failed: SteamMountFilesystem(3944,221,0x50efbfc=,0x50efd0c) failed with error 116: Cache needs repair

Damnit this gets so old sometimes, why can't life NOT be a living hell

I tried deleting my local game content.. that was a no-go, yea don't even say "Restart your computer" because that didn't work either. I was thinking about deleting the folder, but I don't want to delete the wrong folder so I'm like "Wow hey, there are some dudes who know what's up at TWHL so I r teh think mes going there should help".

I had that same problem. I asked valve... they didn't help... I asked people here... they didn't help. I asked the people at hammer.... they didn't help. I dont think anoyone knows how to fix it.

What i did was went to my <username>/sourcesdk/bin folder, found hammer and made a shortcut of that onto my desktop. So you may not be able to run source sdk but atleast you got hammer :

p.s. No deleting the folder doesn't work... niether does reinstalling all of steam or all the source programs on your computer. Nothing works, steam is gay

I'm pretty sure it won't interfere with anything except for the fact that the Source SDK start menu won't start up and give me all those nice little thingys huh?

Ah well, at least I can open Hammer now

That cache error is caused by invalidated cache files for game content - Revalidate all of your cache files with Anonymous' handy link and then you should be able to run the SDK from the menu again and get the launcher available.

i got that error but whenever i opened steam and i had to reinstall it which really pissed me off but that was a long time ago

sigh the validation thing didn't help at all. Creating a shortcut to my desktop did though, but it still bugs me that it is like that. Ah well, maybe it'll go away in awhile once Valve decides to release a patch for Source SDK. /me waits patiently

Same error, different numbers in the parenthesis and such. Yea I tried restarting Steam. If it gets to be a serious pain in the ass I'll probably just deal with it or wait till Valve decides to toss out a patch.

Right click Source SDK in Steam, go to Properties, then click "Delete local game content". This should clear the SDK from your computer. Then just redownload it.

yes sorry forgot to mention that but heres what i did:

i went to properties and told it to delete game then i reinstalled it and downloaded diagnosis thing but it still is stubborn to work!

is the problem only with sdk, or are your source games also affected? i had the same exact error when i tried to launch the sdk. i noticed that i couldn't run cs source or hl2 either. i had to validate the hl2 files and cs source files, then wait for all the bad files to be re-downloaded before i could run hammer. after you do the validation, click on the steam icon in your task bar, then click monitor. it shows what games are being updated and their progress. wait til it's all finished, then give it a minute and try again. you may need to restart steam.

so you've validated all your source games one at a time, waited for them all to update, then restarted steam, and the same problem remains? well if everything else other than the sdk is working, just delete and reinstall that. if you ARE going to reinstall steam, just move all the files and folders in your steamaps folder which are working before you uninstall steam. that way you can just drop them back in place quickly instead of re-downloading them all.

whats weirder is that i havent got any textures on but it has a load of textures and some are of my old sprays that i imported?

are you sure you're running hammer4? if so, and you have no materials showing up, read this and do what it says for game date files. http://www.valve-erc.com/srcsdk/Hammer/html/Manually_Config_Hammer.html

that is the same tutorial i used and yes i did all that but it says nothing about the materials tab does it?

thats what im stuck on so i searched it but it doesnt say what is the default css material file i tried searching the source materials but it wont open

I have had this problem too. one day when i tried to start hemmer i got that damn error message. it got pissed and closed steam.

The next day it worked however. it must be because steam automatically verifies my HL2/CS:S/SDK files whenever it feels like.

(i'm pissed about that as well since it takes 15 minutes every time and it does it 3-4 times a week.)

sorry i know i seem like a nuisance and not helping you but heres a summary:

1. sdk isnt working because of error and nothing seems to fix it!
2. I created desktop icon and started that but i have to set it up unlike the sdk as it sets it automatically!
3. I set it up follow tutorial on verc and it worked but the only thing is that the materials are not the default ones that i usually use!
4. Im using hammer 4 by the way and although i dont have the default ones i have textures from new maps made by mappers for css e.g. i have rat, poolday textures (new ones not old ones from cs)
5. i set it up exactly as it says but i noticed that the materials tab is blank so i must have to put a material there!

The question is what do i put there?

nothing.

if you have the game data files set up properly your materials should show up.

well i redid it following the guide you posted and es it went successful but i still dont have all the textures i had in the old sdk ones e.g. i dont have grass, i dont have cs_office etc

take a look at steams forums... it looks like its becomming a common problem. it seems some people have had success by re installing the sdk.

I dont know whether steam update did it but i opened half life 2 and then closed it and opened sdk and voila it works again yes yes yes yes YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

The answer is on the valve collective site for me it helps if you just run Half life which refreshes the cache.
