If there was, then the standards for top three would probably increase now that the source engine allows much more stuff.

yes compo please. that would be nice. im working on a HL2 map right now that i think is kick ars. its the first map ive ever put real effort into (hl1 or hl2). i would like to go up against the best of TWHL. i dont expect to win but it would be fun.

Sound Words.

A new engine won't make you a better mapper.

Oh really :P

Well if there was to be a HL2 compo then i think it would be best to be held in another site like TWHL2 ;)

To Kol:
But before everyone was compaining that Half-Life could only hold so much detail, and now mappers can make maps look nicer and put more stuff that can do more things.

And I never said that mappers would be better, they are just able to do more with the source engine.

Do more what...

If they couldn't produce fundamental levels in HL1, there is very little chance that they are going to be able to create 'more' with HL2.

Oh, no... that is not right, they will be able to create more.
More crap HL2 levels :-)

woop-de-fricken-doo! More floaters!

But im thinking there is more potential.

But if you dont know how to configure entities for HL1, there will be no chance youll be good with HL2.

Well, I think that the source engine improves design in things like the ability to make 3D skyboxes and experimenting with physics (lots of new options with that)
But its true, if someone makes bad maps with HL1, mistakes are bound to be more obvious with with the new engine (the game sets a higher standard in level design). Only time will tell

I remain skeptical ? Physics, pretty lighting and effects are all good ? but they are nothing if the mapper has no idea how to fully implement them into game play and storytelling.

If you can?t create good game play in hl1, you certainly won?t create anything great in hl2 ? I wasn?t talking about detail ? I was talking about a good level you can have fun playing ? not just because it looks nice.

So far, I haven?t seen any truly imaginative ideas that could be pulled off with the source engine. But:

Time is a factor ? it would take people at least a good year before they get to grips with hl2 and produce something that may be called ?HL2 standard?. When HL first came out ? there were no mods near the quality of today?s hl1 mods.

The upcoming result of VALVe's HL2DM mapping compo are probably going to prove you wrong on that, since they said they are having an enormous problem picking the winners. For Hl1 mappers, moving on to Hl2 doesnt mean learning to map from scratch, in some cases it means the ability to make a map you had always thought of, but the old engine prevented you from doing so. :)

There is this map called

dm_depot

It is rumoured to be the winning map ;)

Meh, dm_depot is okay but it has it's share of bugs along with all the other maps. It plays well, though. We'll see - There's a lot of other maps out there that are very good, too.

dm_rebar is good, for example, but it has some very serious performance issues in lower end computers (I hope they choose a well balanced map, like... mine :D )
