I know many of you know how use HTML or Javascript. But I would like to know which different variations of software you use for making webpages. I want to test a couple see which to use. I know HTML and Java pretty well, but I just want to see the extent to which the user is able to detail a webpage. Any input?

3DSmax 5.0+Photoshop 6.0 for the pictures, icons, borders etc ...
Director 7.02 for the shockwave animations and interfaces,
Dreamweaver MX for the general HTML formatting.

an exemple : http://www.ideaseed.net/web/TRM/ :)

I use Dreamweaver MX for my CSS, i use Photoshop for my graphics, and i use my knowledge of PHP, HTML, and ASP.

Would you happen to know of or use any downloadable ones. I don't really want to invest in software I might not use a whole lot. Otherwise I'll stick with my Notepad and HTML.

I looked at the Dreamweaver Mx and found a hefty price tag.

Please prove me wrong.

Bah. I use Vi for code editing and Photoshop for graphics. PHP, JavaScript, CSS and HTML are the various scripting languages I use in my site.

I use PHP, HTML, and CSS.

What could you use Javascript for?

oh, your news sytem? I need one of those.

Uhh, no JavaScript is for those little things, like popup windows, onClick events, status text changing, and other little page enhancements.
m0p m0pIllogical.

PHP is kinda useless though, for you site m0p.. I thought you used a default forum template?

I just use HTML and CSS, using only NotePad, and its slightly more advanced big brother EditPlus. Sometimes I use TopStyle for the CSS.

My advice is: Don't use "build a site"-software, learn it yourself :)
http://www.w3schools.com has some great tutorials.

A trick to doing some quick html is to open Word, make a website and then click source code and copy and paste into your new website and presto..

do you think everybody is planning to spend his/her whole life about learning, building, debugging, protecting and updating code ?
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-18 12:17:49 UTC Post #91474
Yes, its easy.

I like dreamweaver because it lets you preview your site right after you edit the code without having to save and view it in a browser.

Uhh ZombieLoffe, PHP makes navigating my site less of a pain in the arse, and lets me get quick+easy access to visitors browser headers and IP's. And no, my forum uses a template with modded colors. But, all the graphics on the main site are homemade.
m0p m0pIllogical.

Dreamweaver is for suckers, all I need for my webpages is photyshop and notepad.

Whenever I try to do something advanced in dreamweaver, it gets all the tables mixed up, and I just think it's annoying when you try to add php.

Probably, but I'm too lazy to learn how to do things right. And that's why I'll stick with notepad.... for life. :
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-18 17:38:20 UTC Post #91572
I used to use notepad. It was anoying but it was all jumbled and unorganized. Dreamweaver fixes that.

Maybe you should just learn to organize your thoughts, then you wouldn't have to use such big bulky programs. :P
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-18 17:42:41 UTC Post #91575
Big bulky programs you say? I have 40gb left on my hard drive. Everything is otay.

Posted 19 years ago2005-02-18 17:45:16 UTC Post #91577
Yeah, well, I only have a 40 gig hdd. So the more room I can save, the better. I would buy a new one, but I'm still paying for that trip I had to Whistler last month.

Anyways; Dreamweaver can be a good peice of software, if you know how to use it right, and don't mind "paying" for it.
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-18 17:48:48 UTC Post #91579
Yah, "paying" for it is always the hard part. Gotta come up with some "money". ;)

Who said I was trying to be "1337"?

And I've never used Homesite, but If Jennifer Kyrnin says it's good, I don't think I can go wrong.

/me goes off to "buy" Homesite

I just tried HomeSite+, and I like how it works so far...but the preview is just like dreamweaver, doesn't work very well. Not to mention the fact that it can't even try looking at .php files, wich is practically all I use. I think I'll be sticking with notepad and photoshop, thank you very much.

i have photoshop and psp, and i find psp is just as good, and infact, i prefer it.
now back to the proper subject..

i write my pages in winsyntax, its like a flashy version of notpad. it colour codes the synatxing, making scanning easier, and numbers the lines so debugging the "error in line x" is easier. and its free. i have dreamweaver too, which is a fantastic bit of kit, but pointless to load because my pc i slooooooooooooooow and i know the code, so i write it myself. you cant beat notepad for quick coding though.

i use topstyle for my css, simply because it makes my life easier. plus, it can wite your css for you if you dont know how.

i use paintshop pro and photoshop for my graphics, oh and paint! (for emoticons).

i write my javascript (what little of it i use) in notepad.
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-19 22:11:39 UTC Post #91927
Thanks for Winsyntax, I tried it and I like it. Exactly what I wanted. I'll just have to see how it works out in the long run. It's a shame the colors are kind of ugly/annoying even if they are helpful. :

Bradsoft Topstyle light [CSS] (Free)
AlleyCode (Free)
Smartftp (Free)
Bigpond 10Mb Home site (Free)
eXtreme Tracker (Free)
IrFanview (Free)
Ruthsarian Layouts [heavily modified] (Free)
All XHTML coding done in Alleycode which is crap, but it does show up obvious syntax errors.

Notice that these are all free and not 'borrowed'...

Everyone has a special program, like's or dislikes...
Just create your pages with whatever you are comfortable with.
After all, it is done on a 'personal computer' !!
